  • Hi Kris,

on their website, they have a bonus Intel 240GB SSD, is that included with your deal?

    • Hi, This deal replaces the Intel 240GB SSD and upgrades it to the 512GB Sandisk SSD. It's normally a +$89 upgrade.
      Kris

      • ah right cheers, saw it on the heading but not in the description. :)

        Thanks

        • +2

Good point. I accidentally left it out. It's there now :)

  • Any possible deals on the P650RP-G or RS-G ?

    • At the moment we only have the deal for the P650RP. I'll check tomorrow about the other models for you :)
I'm signing off for the night…I mean morning!

        Haha, awesome, thanks a lot!

      • Thanks - now you've made my life quite difficult…

  • Hey Kris - Out of curiosity - if we find our existing Metaboxes requires a GPU upgrade, do you guys just sell the GPUs for us to DIY upgrade to the Pascals that you are now offering? I'm guessing the interface and design should be relatively the same..

    • -1

Never heard of laptop GPU is upgradable…

      • MXM gpus can be interchanged and can allow upgrades

      • I've upgraded a number of Dells and HP's before with better video cards. They arent standard for sure, but comes on a separate daughterboards that are directly replaceable.

    • +2

This range of Metabox (Clevo) laptops have the GPUs soldered to the motherboard, they're not MXM. So basically, no, you can't.

    • +1

Hi again, I will confirm this with Metabox but usually it is just the higher spec models like the P750DM2-G, P775DM2-G and P870DM2-G that will allow the GFX card to be upgraded. And then the upgraded GFX card needs to have the same socket.
The P650/670 models have a soldered to the motherboard GFX card so not possible to upgrade.
      Cheers
      Kris

      • Thanks for confirming Kris.. My current config on the P670RE is still awesome. Was a nice to know though. :)

      • -1

Yuck, gfx cards dying is not uncommon (as far as computer faults go), particularly for dedicated graphics cards, having a soldered solution isn't something I would want to do with a gaming laptop (not with the number of gfx cards I've had die in laptops).

Are those models all 17"+ machines, or is there a 15" machine that is MXM from Metabox?

Also my last Metabox has no branding on the laptop, is it possible to get unbranded versions?

  • can this laptop handle vr thingy liked the oculus, vive?

    • +1

This is quite a top of the range config that match or beat probably 80% of desktop selling in the market. If an above-average desktop can handle it, this laptop will have no problem.

      • 1060 should be able to.

  • what is the normal price?
    what is the saving?

    • Will be hard to tell because, being a white-label laptop, pretty much everything is configurable, and depends on the bulk wholesale prices of various components at the moment when the machine is built.

    • The saving is $89.

Wow the mobile 10 series is finally out.

  • Does anyone have any experience with this laptop or previous generation model? I want to know the fan noise on such powerful gaming laptop.

    • I've got an older Metabox P150EM, you can hear the fan but it is by no means annoying…

    • A customer with the previous model posted this video on YouTube.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBnXizJ9k_M

      Kris

    • I have the previous P650RE model.
Under general use, I don't hear the fans (3 in total). General use includes 2 browsers (IE & FF) with ~20 tabs, Outlook & Word 2016, and a media player (WMP or VLC).
If I run something intensive like an antivirus scan, I can hear the fans on low.
      I don't game.

      • are you able to comment on battery life?

        • +1

I haven't really used the battery for extended periods as it's usually plugged in.

I just unplugged the power and it says 93% 3 hours 3 mins remaining …that's with a 24" 1920x1200 external monitor at full brightness (laptop is about 3 months old).

        • @1bug: okay, thanks

        • +1

          @beaver2233:

I just got under 3 hours battery life with an old external monitor that won't dim.
I'd guess that using the native FHD display at reduced brightness should get ~4 hours battery life.

  • Any 4k screen deals? What's the battery life like? (comparing to dell xps 15 4k here)

    • At the moment we only have the Full HD screen special.
The manufacturer says the below about the battery life.
I am always skeptical about how they get these figures. Personally I would expect up to about 240 minutes with normal use and much much less if gaming (1-1.5 hrs).

      Power
      • Full Range AC adapter, AC in 100~240V, 50~60Hz, DC output 19V, 10.5A , 200W
      • Embedded 4 cells Polymer battery pack, 60WH
      • Battery life: 325 minutes (with UMA mode, 60WH Battery)

      Kris

  • As good as this deal is, I'd still be recommending people go for the G-Sync model (P650RP-G), especially with a 1060 (rather than 1070). There are some games now that can't be played with all settings up at 60+fps (eg, Witcher 3), and I'm sure there'll be plenty more over the next couple of years, and if the system can't maintain 60fps then either you'll be playing at 30Hz with V-sync or you'll have tearing. Best go for a G-sync model so that the refresh rate will match whatever the GPU is capable of.

    • +2

I'm looking into whether we can also offer the G-SYNC version :)

  • Hi OP , just a bit curious , is it possible that you guys can put the OEM Windows on these ( that may cost $30 ) instead of asking the consumer to pay for full version $139 .

I know the $139's license can be transferred and has its advantages etc , but some of us would just be happy to have the $100 savings instead of having a transferable full windows license .

    • +1

The $139 licence from Metabox is the OEM version. You can buy it yourself from somewhere like MSY yourself if you like and it'll be essentially the same price.

      http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

OEM is $134, retail is $139.

      • Oh , I read a while back that the OEM pricing for Dell and HP is around $25-$30 depending on the Home or pro versions … If it is going to be $134 for OEM , I might as well buy an OEM copy for cheaper elsewhere and put it on …

Thinking to get one of these during Christmas ( to avail few benefits from work that may make it cheaper for me )

    • +1

We only have the $139 option, sorry. This is provided to us at factory level from Metabox.
      Kris.

      • Thanks for the update Kris

  • Just want to double check before i hit buy on a p670rp-g. Yes not this ozbargained model (i want the 17" with the 6820hk cpu) but my question is valid for this machine too.
The website says they can have 2x m.2 ssds - but only 1x 950pro nvme "due to size". i am aware that the 950pro cards are a longer than normal m.2s, but my question is, can i have a 950 pro and a normal size m.2 ssd, or just 1x950 pro and nothing else?

this may be a silly question but it depends whether the m2 slots are side by side (ie take up a square space) or top and bottom (long and thin space).
i am thinking buy the 512 sandisk x400 first and get the 950 pro later when i have saved up a bit more cash.

    • +2

can i have a 950 pro and a normal size m.2 ssd, or just 1x950 pro and nothing else?

According to the Clevo specs, 1x950 pro and nothing else…

      P650RP6-G

      P670RP6-G

"(Factory Option) Two M.2 2280 SSD, SATA interface (RAID 0/1) or
      One M.2 2280 SSD, PCIe Gen3x4 interface"

      • Thanks, i appreciate the response. And those clevo links - they are giving me a bit more reading, on a few other models as well.

makes me glad i asked. People here are good for bargains, but also a generally helpful community.

looks like i might go with a sata ssd for now and grab a pcie ssd later on then.

        • +1

If you remove the default 240GB M.2 SSD (this precludes you from installing the 950 Pro), you save $100.

You can then buy the 950 PRO 512GB M.2 NVMe for $375.20 (after 20% off eBay)
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/261550

        • +1

          @1bug:
That is true, maybe i will buy it sans hdd/ssd, and grab the 950pro and windows oem (on usb) separately. The Ozbargain way.

    • Only one PCIe SSD and it then blocks the 2nd M.2 SSD port.
      Or 2 x SATA3 M.2 SSD's.
      Kris

  • if i add my own extra SSD/HDD to the laptop, will it void the warranty?

    • No it won't void the warranty.
      Kris

      • You can upgrade the RAM,HDD/SSD or Wi-Fi card and it won't void the warranty :)
        Kris

        • Thanks Kris. Ordered. Will do bank transfer asap. (only if there is no surcharge for PayPal…:P)

        • Paid.

        • @akatsuki:
          Great, Thanks.

Rep, Thanks for giving us the screen upgrade option! Now give us deal on P650-RS-G and I'll bite!

    • I'll send you a PM :)

    Want a deal on P775DM2-G

    • Or even a deal on P670RS-G

      • I just sent you a PM :)
        Kris

  • Rep, is there any word on if the 14" model will eventually be fitted with 10 series cards?

    • Not at this stage. I think they are sorting out the cooling in such a small form factor with the GTX1060 cards.
I'll check it out and see if I can get an answer for you :)
      Kris

    • It's still unclear on when the GTX1060 will be upgraded into the P640RE. Latest word is that it will be downgraded with the GTX965M instead.
      If I hear more I will re-post.

      Cheers
      Kris

      • that's a bit disappointing to hear, thank you for the update though!
