Couple of things to mention here …

    1) I'm pretty sure everything works over LTE, so you would need a mobile phone that supports VoLTE as well. (Voice over LTE)

    2) You can't access this deal from Australia, you'd have to be in India.

Also, I heard that there was a big rush for these when they were launched. Not sure how easy they are to get now.

And thanks OP for mentioning these, will be helpful on my upcoming trip as well.

      On my trip
My experience of getting the sim without the Indian social security card a tad difficult. An Indian friend of mine helped me out there. Basically if you don't have the social security card you are much better using the airtel or Vodafone. I had a nexus 6p and though it supports Volte Huawei have disabled (sucks) it at a firmware level.

You are stuck with a very poor VoIP app that was again a pain to download as it is a country locked app.

The process to get a sim for a visitor is:

      1. Download Myjio app apk
      2. Register and get a bar code
      3. Take the barcode and couple passport size photographs, along with passport to a reliance shop (good chance to have one near you if you are in one of their metro cities. I found one in Goa near my resort)
      4. Sim activation takes a few hours to a day max

Tl:Dr get a dual sim phone. Use Jio just for data (4GB limit per day) and use the second sim for calling and get airtel/Vodafone.

This sounds too much like what they do in Kingsman The Secret Service…. People killing each other coming soon?

    • I'm in India right now but I still can't download the MyJio app, it just says "product not available in your country". Anybody have any ideas?

      • I just returned 2 weeks ago and had no problem downloading it on iPhone 6S with Australian app store login !

      • Download it from sources other than the playstore.

        EG: http://www.apkmonk.com/app/com.jio.join/
(You'll need to enable "installs from unknown sources" in you setting though)

good luck withdrawing your own cash! but this deal is free so no problem

    • +4

I agree it sucked big time but I had help. I recommend travellers to use a card without international transaction fees and also use paytm.com for all cashless transactions. I was surprised to see roadside vendors accepting paytm payments. You can download the paytm app on google play and is not country locked.

I used it for everything and also received cash back on movies.

The above comment was about travelers to India… Why referring to 90% Indians here?

        • -6

@rtgn: so when you travel to India you don't have to deal with 90% people for day to day need? watch the link by sajju below.

If you are travelling you should be concerned! you don't want to spend your day queuing all day at atm! Brace yourself Indian recession is coming.

      • -3

I received email from smarttravel.gov.au about keeping high degree of caution for after effects demonetisation. Making 85% of legal tender as invalid is madness and crippling the economy.

      • haha.. im not going there for at least a year!

    • +19

Ozbargainers traveling to India might be benefited. Its a gogo

  • +1

Good deal however this is deal for Indian.
This is not available in Australia.
So, I don't think it is allowed to be posted here.

The ideal place for this post is in desidime.com

  • +1

This is a very popular deal in India and very well advertised. It will be hard to get this SIM without the India Social Security card (Aadhar Card).

  • -8

India only? No use for us aussies then :-(

    • +6

At the very least put [India] at the front.

The current title of "Jio 4G Prepaid Mobile Plan 'Happy New Offer' Free Calling, SMS and 1GB Data Per Day (India Only) till 31st March 2017" is confusing.

Is it just the 1GB Data Per Day that's "India Only"?

What does that even mean in the context of OzBargain?

Click into post to find out all of it is India Only.

Edit to add: this would really be better in the forums. It's useful advice, just not a deal that's relevant to 90+% of OzBargain's audience.

    • +3

So basically the deal is for anyone who is visiting India from today till 31st March 2017

OP made it pretty clear who this deal could be useful to.

No use for us aussies then

Not much use if you don't plan to travel to India.

Might be helpful to have a read of the voting guidlines

    • +5

Some of 'us aussies' travel to India

  • +3

Sweet, will attempt to get one when I'm in chennai.

  • +1

People r standing in queue to withdraw their own cash n when this was launched, I heard there was a big rush too, so for any tourists, they may have to stand in two queues. I m hoping not.

  • Does it include global roaming? Maybe can use it in Australia?

    • unless you coming back from India this deal make no sense

      • Friends holidaying in India can send sim back?

Gotta do everything to survive living in Australia!

  • -6

    Useless for most Aussies.

    • Pls see post below

      Deal Posting Guidelines

      Overseas Deals

Deals in Overseas Countries - Deals available overseas may be applicable to Australians traveling to that destination. Some deals located overseas may not be applicable to the majority of Australians in reasonable circumstances however. Currently only travel/tourist related deals should be posted on OzBargain, these include but are not limited to: Flights, Accommodation, Tours, Airport Facilities/Transport, Special Events (World Cup, Olympics etc) & Communication (Sim Cards, Roaming internet etc). Deals outside of these categories or not realistically applicable to the majority of members may be removed by a moderator.

      • Thanks for the clarification. Makes sense

  • +19

This is really helpful for Aussie's like me (especially free 1GB data per day?), who will be holidaying in India till Feb 17. Thank you for posting here Currybender.

    • +6

Yup… But make sure the sim is in your phone when you do.

  • -4

    Not available in Australia.
And from what I read and hear, it's not a good time to travel to India. Lots of tourists including Aussie tourists left stranded and left to busk and beg because the country demonitised some currency notes and there was no consideration or exceptions made for foreign tourists. So cash appears to be pretty scarce there at the moment and a country that runs mostly on cash, as a foreign tourist you'll have a great deal of struggle.

    • There are exceptions made for foreign tourists including priority queues etc

      • spk, I would like to see some evidence and not just 2 lines written somewhere but if it was practiced. I've seen pictures of queues outside banks and they were crazy. Didn't see any sign of priority queues. Foreign tourists did not have food to eat, they had money but it was useless.
Here's my source, it contains photos too.

On another note, you seem to be quite passionate about this deal and very active responding to whoever has a negative opinion of this deal; are you sure you're not associated with Jio brand?

        • I agree that there were long queues outside banks and ATMs as that is what will happen when government takes such a big decision overnight.

It takes time to settle down.

I pity at you knowing you still trust media as a trustees source.

On another note, does it matter even if am associated with Jio ?

        • On another note, does it matter even if am associated with Jio ?

@spk: Yes, it does. According to OZB guidelines, you are supposed to check the box "I am associated with Jio.com" when you're posting a comment. Applies if and when you're posting a deal too. You're breaking OZB rules if you don't.

I pity at you knowing you still trust media as a trustees source.

Not sure what is a trustees source. But as I haven't traveled there recently or don't intend to travel there in near future, I get my information from the various media sources and colleagues of Indian origin in the office. The people of Indian origin in our office are bitterly divided over their current leader and his policies (including demonetization). The ones that are followers of current PM and his policies say the same thing "Don't trust the media" and get very easily worked up about it. They cannot handle any fair criticism at all, so I suppose I can now guess why your comments are so biased :)

        • @Porco Rosso: doesn't make sense to ask if am associates when you the see the check box not ticked.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/280100#comment-4240713
See comments from fellow ozbargainers who had personally experienced and majority of the population are happy to go through the pain(which is temporary).

I don't think any leader could satisfy all sections of the society. We definitely need to appreciate his bravery in taking this decision in worlds largest democracy.

          At least a step forward.

On your original point of foreigners/ tourists sufferings… yes it did happen for initial couple of days
Government has then announced exemption status and taken care of them nicely wherever possible

        • @spk:
I personally don't have an opinion about the indian pm as I honestly don't care. But having been there in the past, I know the kind of poverty that exists there. And ignoring those 'sections' of the society who are the most vulnerable is no bravery or step forward. It is purely subjective and if your origin is indian, you might feel more strongly about it. My pov is the one from a neutral foreigner who doesn't know much about indian politics or their political parties.
I sponsor a child in India for his education and I know that his father who is a casual labourer hasn't got much work at since the demonitisation farce. A couple of jobs he did, they didn't pay him. The family rely on the father getting a job or two so they can buy basic food/grocery. I can help this particular family but there are hundreds of millions of other families in a similar dilemma. So, tell me again how the demonitisation is helping the majority in India?

        • @Porco Rosso: demonitisation is one step ahead for a greater good.

Yes, there is a lot of pain and trouble going on across all sectional of the society.

No one has promised that poverty would be eradicated over night due to demonitisation.

I am confident that we will see positive results in near future.

    • -1

brainless self proclaimed patriotic lots yet living overseas downvoting real concerns & issues! The worst is that they are in majority with their blind faith in some super heroes politicians who don't have a clue about economics but just know how to win votebank by polarising the innocent people for their agenda. You got my upvote for addressing reality.

    • +1

Although I am not debating whether this should be a deal or not I agree the troubles you may face if you are visiting India soon. I was in India when the demonetisation announced and overnight Rs10000 I had in 500 and 1000 Rupees notes became useless. Luckily I had some 1000 rupees in hundreds and was able to pay for my food and hotel using my Coles Master Prepaid card. If you are travelling to India soon pay for your hotel and local flights in advance in AUD from here. Take good enough amount in cash from the foreign exchange and carry a no foreign transaction fee credit or debit card and you will be fine.

On the topic of demonetisation I saw people struggling to get some cash out of ATMs for day to day expenses but all the people I spoke to strongly supported government even if it means a lot of inconvenience to them. They said it is a necessary pain a mother has to go through to give birth to a beautiful child.

Morally i would stay away from this Mob. They are like Alan bond with family spread and would be never be caught.
These guys would never do transactions outside their home country and no way near TATA sons (They acquired Jaguar and British steel ).

Their deeds speak for themselves [List of scam reliance ] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Reliance_scams). Just don't promote Doggy Corporates.
Just bring a yoga pant from India :).

    • +4

True, I read about this mob being immoral and unethical. The articles I read had pictures of the company's owner and his wife with the current PM. Looks like they get along well…I smell a….well don't worry…lol

      • +1

Apparently the book The Polyester Prince was written by an Aussie. Read this if you want to know more about the evil empire and it's political ties.

Having said that, the deal is a good one and would benefit travellers to India.

        • Looks a bit pricey from US$329.97 or new at $2108.01….. did Ambani buy the entire print run or something to take it out of the marketplace?

        • @Gravy: Quite possible, the book was banned in India. pdfs are circulating around though. :)

        • @gentlecrack: So I hear. :)

    • +1

Relevant to people travelling to India… I see these deals all the time here.. specially the Japan sim card deals. Wats the fuss????

      • +6

These Japan SIM card deals are usually available within Australia before you get to Japan though. This one you actually have to be in India to get it.

      • -1

So I can post a deal from Target USA right????? Applies to people travelling there. Exact same logic. Can't purchase it from Australia. That's the difference.
And the mods think I don't have a valid reason for neg, what a joke

        • So I can post a deal from Target USA right????? Applies to people travelling there. Exact same logic.

No foreskin, link to guidelines here if you're still having trouble understanding how it works

        • -1

This is a fantastic deal for me though not all deals are appropriate for everyones circumstances. If we only allowed posts that were appropriate for everyone there would be no OB.

        • @razzamatazza:
But it doesn't apply to Australia 🤔
By your logic OzBargain should be called InternationalBargain

  • +15

Good deal, I have heard India is going pretty hi-tech these days, while the world has only banned Note 7, they have already banned Note 500 or something.

      • +2

Why do you have to show your ignorance on every comment? It was pretty obvious from your first comment to another poster. You are providing nothing in return to this community with the zero number of posts you made. So don't complain!

        • -4

You get to arbitrate on nothing. Jimmy boy

        • +2

@hardya: neither do you! Keep your racist remarks to yourself. This is Ozbargain not undertherockbargain

        • +1

@Jimmy007: thanks Jimmy for standing up against bigots.

    • +4

lol, that was quite funny :)

  • +17

Good find OP. I am sure some people might find this helpful. Personally not helpful for me.

Just to bring some balance to this conversation, for all those people who say this is not a deal, there have been posts in the past where people have posted deals for simcards to hongkong, singapore and other countries. They have been allowed as they are helpful to some ozbargainers.

The purpose of posting a deal here is that it might benefit to some people, but negging a deal just because it doesn't suit you is childish and doesn't go with the spirit of OzB in my opinion

    • +2

      Well said mate

  • +1

Thanks for sharing mate. I am sure to try out when I am visiting Chennai soon

  • Thanks op:) could be a dumb question does this sim works with iPhone?

    • +2

It's a prepaid and it should work as long as your phone is outright

  • +1

Good One Mate, Keep on Posting !

  • -3

    it's Indiabargain, not ozbargain!!!

    • So ?

      What's your point?

  • -2

    Isn't this "Oz" Bargain lol

  • nice mate. will come in useful for the upcoming trip!

  • Great deal, definitely worth it for people travelling to India.

  • +4

If I can buy this SIM card prior to departing Australia and have it shipped to Australia prior to arriving in India then it is a deal. On the other hand, if the deal in unavailable until I arrive there, then it shouldn't be posted on OzB. In that later case why don't we begin posting Walmart of Tesco deals too?

    • +3

In that later case why don't we begin posting Walmart of Tesco deals too?

Already guides here for that champ

      • +1

So, what if we find a cheap SIM for the US from Walmart or Tesco? Might as well post a deal then HAHA

        • +6

          Nothing stopping you

  • Bravo OP. Thanks. Visiting India from 12th Jan for 6 weeks. Cheers 🍻😊

Stop being a racist and take your 'keep Australia white' views elsewhere.

    • +1

      Thanks for your bogan comment.

A bargain is a bargain regardless of who it benefits to. I dont buy most of the things posted here. But I always upvote a deal when I see one.

  • How did this get 100 votes? There are that many of you going to India?

    • -1

      They breed like rabbits

Please do not promote to this scheme. Reliance is making their black money as white money from you guys buying these freebies stuff..

Could you please explain how any firm could be making money by offering free services? Keen to hear your answer.
