  • Could i buy this, sign up for the free month then if i discovered the speed/reception in my house was shit and return it?

Is there anyway to test if Vivid speeds by location?

    • Pretty sure a good way to check if it'll work in your place is to get a cheap optus sim and seeing whether you can get faster than 10 on a speed test. If so, you'll get the most out of this.

Not sure about returns however but I guess you can sell it as second hand?

      • Not necessarily, the Optus sim would not be locked to any frequency so the results will be misleading.

        Vivid runs on 2300mhz only.

        • Then I guess you could find a way to ban the other optus bands on your phone or get a cheap device which also only works with the same band.

  • Got a broken link in the description :)

  • I got this for 140 using 2x 25 coupons when it was on sale but this deals not bad too. Don't forget ebay cash back and also a referral to get another month off when you sign up.

    • How's your 4G speed?

      • 10/1 which is the max unfortunately but I'm OK with that since it's 3x faster than my adsl2+.

    • -1

Not sure if you can double dip with the referral

      • You can. They had a promo when I bought mine outright for a free month about two months back, and then during signup I also used a referral code! Two months free (basically just saved me the cost of the modem, I would have gone the plan option as it's cheaper than buying outright even if you cancel except I am in a non-coverage area with an antenna so didn't have the return option otherwise).

  • max speeds are 12/1 so if you have decent adsl2 no need for this..

    • +3

      10/1 actually

    • +5

So half of Australia should use it thanks to Turnbullshit net

      • Our internet speed did make the Turn.

    • As above, this is 10/1. The optus plan is 12 though but that's data limited unfortunately.

  • works well for myself however I am in a good coverage area. Netflix and streaming works well. Torrents and the sort are speed limited.

    • I've found that if i use utorrent's proxy settings and encryption i can usually hit 800-900kbps speeds for downloads. Steam maxes out at 1.1mbps for me

      • mbit, or mByte?

  • was thinking of signing up while I wait for NBN connection. but $160 modem is a dealbreaker. Why can't I just use SIM card in phone/tablet?

    • This product is for people who are unlucky enough to live in an area without cable, ADSL or Fiber. Or if they move around a lot and are renting.

It's also got router features so basically it's a combo device, just like most ADSL modems.

    • Good question… it does actually just have a standard full sized sim in it… so it MIGHT function if you pull the settings from the modem/router itself.

      • This does not work. The SIM only works in the provided modem. It won't even work in a different vivid modem. The SIM is locked to the modem you buy it with.

Read on whirlpool. The vivid SIM card will work with any unlocked 4G modem and iirc with no setup on an Optus one

        • Interesting - @easternculture seems to indicate otherwise in the post…

        • +1

          @easternculture:

I think you will find that's not the case. You must have misread. It's definitely locked to the specific modem.

edit: I have one and have tried it :)

@easternculture: Can you stop misleading potential customers?

Where did you read that vivid SIMs work in other devices? Here's a few hundred posts proving you wrong: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2489033

I suggest you do some research before you post deals.

        • The Vivid sim will definitely not work in any other 4G modem.
If you want to take it on a trip with you, you'll have to take the Vivid modem too.

        • :(

  • Just as an FYI, the MAXIMUM disconnect cost on a 24 month plan is $190.71

If you stay with Vivid for 6 months, the cost is instead only $150 to disconnect. So something to consider. If you stayed with them for longer than about 5 months it works out better to have ordered it on the 24 month plan instead. Not 100% sure what the 'free month if purchased from retailer' is about though, so excluded it from math. Still eligible for the referral month.

  • Hi all.
Has anyone here bridged this modem to a wireless router? Asking because I have a fair few devices that would require access and I read somewhere that these modems restrict the number of connections.

Additionally, does anyone know if P2P connections are throttled?

    thanks in advance!

    • Bridging it is a bit weird, there's a DMZ workaround for it:
      http://forum.vividwireless.com.au/forum/faqs-lte/faq-lte-briā€¦

P2P is throttled, though obviously if you use a VPN (as you should) they are full speed.

I use it in 'bridge' mode to my existing R7000 and uptime is regularly 400-500 odd hours before the modem resets connection.

  • Vivid is great if you live near a 2300 optus tower.

  • Can anyone confirm the one month free? I'm having trouble finding it anywhere..

    • Yes. Two months if you use a refer a friend code.

      • Wow. OMG. How? Can you refer me please Jikxy? Hopefully I get the modem tomorrow.

      • will I get the 2 months free if I'm using monthly plan, not 12/24 month plan?

edit : no need to answer my question :D
the $199 modem is only for month-to-month plan.

  • FYI - be wary about gaming on vivid. While speeds are almost a constant 10/1, as soon as ANY congestion hits the first thing to go is latency. Have fun with 150+ pings, disconnections etc. Your mileage may vary depending on location. I have a spare vodafone SIM for gaming (yeah, vodafone!).

  • My ping has remained stable and low between 20ms to 40ms tops. Connection has been consistently fast at 1200kbp/s. Upload at 140kbp/s. I used to be on terrible adsl2 with a 3mbps connection with download of 330 kbp/s and upload of 80kbp/s with iiNet thanks to distance to exchange and bad wiring on the street despite my property being new.
