Motorola Moto G4 Plus 16GB/2GB (White, AU Stock) $299.52 Delivered
Dropped in price by $30, quite a bit cheaper than The Good Guys $329 deal. A great price and Australian stock with tax invoice & 2 years warranty.

Motorola Moto G4 Plus 16GB/2GB (Black, AU Stock) $328.32 Delivered
Hasn't dropped in price further like the white, however still a cheaper price and you'll get free delivery.

This is the Motorola Moto G4 Plus 16GB storage which comes with 2GB of RAM, also includes 4G/3G dual sim functionality for those who want to use it & 5.5" screen. See previous deals for discussions and comparisons. The cheapest price seen yet for AU stock in the 16GB. Unfortunately no good deals on the 32GB/3GB in Aus Stock but still available $323.90 at T-Dimension though

Yes because it's Australian stock (i.e. you do pay GST on it).

Also, yes even to the $299.97 one even though it's technically below $300. The price shown on the receipt will be the original eBay listing price and not the post 20% price.

Hm wow. Never really considered this device as I've always looked at all the Xiaomis as being better bang for buck (in terms of specs). The only thing that's made me a little hesitant about the more recent Xiaomis is how there is no longer a dedicated memory card slot. It's always shared with the second SIM slot.

This appears to have three things going for it over Xiaomis:

    • Australian stock, i.e. Australian warranty
    • Dedicated memory slot
    • Runs 4G/3G dual SIM (as opposed to 4G/2G) which seems increasingly important seeing as all the telcos are turning off their 2G

I will probably not buy this now but I will definitely keep this in mind going forward.

Can anyone convince me not to pick this over one of the Xiaomis? Dual SIM is a must for me and I'm looking at spending <$300. Currently using a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 which seems like one of the last Xiaomis to have both dual SIM and a dedicated memory slot.

      edit

You can click on the GSM arena page which you can filter out and see which one has a dedicated uSD and 2nd SIM slot

      • Thanks.

I have definitely noticed the memory card slots are reserved for the lower-end segment. However, for example, the Redmi Note 3 and Redmi Note 4 both do not have a dedicated memory card slot. They're both shared with the second SIM slot. I'm looking for something where the memory card slot is not shared.

Part of me feels not having a memory card is not an absolute deal breaker (especially with apps like Google Photos and its unlimited photo backup feature) but part of me can't let go of it too lol.

edit: lol your edit makes my comment look completely silly. Shit. What now..? HAHA

I recently chose the G4 Plus over the Xiaomis on account of the cameras on Xiaomis being ridiculously bad.

      • +1

Nah not that bothered by the badness of the camera. I am aware of it but am fine with it personally.

      • +1

Are they really that bad in Xiaomis? I mean, I had a Moto G2 and the camera was passable at best.

        • +1

G4 Plus has a much better camera than G2. Well IMO much better than 'passable'. Photography website DxOMark gave the phone's camera the same rating as the Nexus 6P and iPhone 6.

          https://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Motorola-Moto-G-Plus-Mobile-…

Xiaomi cameras are not even passable to the point of being unusable. I didn't really care about cameras previously but I recently had a child and was finding I didn't even want to use my phone to take any photos because they all come out blurry.

this phone has band 28, very few of the xioamis have band 28. Bought the motorola for my son to replace his xioami. ….. he needs dual sim and 3g/4g on both sims …… does lots of data. We got the plus with 32GB.

      • +1

        Yes am aware of that.

But I have not found the lack of Band 28 to be detrimental to the usage of my phone at all, so thus not bothered by the lack of Band 28.

    • +1

I would add an extra plus for the Motorola that resulted in me getting rid of my Xiaomi - Your phone records don't get sent to a server in Shanghai for no other purpose than what you'd be suspicious of.

      • +2

Not that concerned about that. If I was so concerned about privacy I probably wouldn't use a smartphone.

    • +1

Another benefit of the Moto is that it runs a more 'stock like' Android version if you're into that. Yes you can flash Cyanogenmod on most Xiaomis but that does require some technical knowledge.

      • +2

Another benefit that I like using Moto G4 Plus was that it has only one page of apps initially which means less Google crap also (for some people like me Google Newsstand, Movies, Music, Keep etc)

      • Hm that's a slight selling point. I always root my phones and usually flash a custom ROM anyway so not huge, but still good to know.

    • +1

Was also looking at the these, ended up with Redmi Pro 64/3GB for same price (~$300.)
Only issue is you need to be prepared for tinkering (no global ROM) and I still can't get my contacts to sync for some reason (although this problem is not confined to Xiaomis, something to do with contacts sync service version.)
Would be nice to have NFC (don't they use it much in China? they seem to leave this out on many models) and 5GHz wifi.
Of course no local warranty is always in the back of my mind but hopefully won't need to use that! $300 is about as much as I'd risk.
I don't have a need for dual-SIM and I have not been able to actually confirm this is 4G+3G but I'm pretty sure it is, and therefore I have a free SD slot but again I don't need it since I went for the 64GB version - good to have both of them though for 'just in case.'
Other thing I can't confirm is whether it's USB 2.0 or 3.1. I think it's 2.0 (don't have a 3.1 cable,) trying to find correct spec's on these things is very difficult. And they don't come with a manual so no help there for spec's or operation (not that I need to know how to use eg. the volume buttons, but eg. there is a 'clover leaf' button on the lock screen which I think is for wallpaper but it does nothing when I push it.)

TL;DR: Got the Redmi Pro 64/3GB for same price - going well so far.

      • Speaking of that clover leaf button, mine worked when I first got the phone but now no longer does anything. It is supposed to be for "dynamic wallpapers" which is actually a really cool feature but I don't know why/when/how it stopped working.

I'd be surprised if the dual SIM is actually 4G/3G though. I didn't think a Redmi would have that.

        • Yeah, I think it's because one of the first things I install is Nova Launcher - happy with MIUI except for the 'ios' home screen.

From what I've seen it is 4G+3G - I think (phone makers realise) we are past the days of 2G (especially for med/high-end phones.)

    • I once saw a hack for adding micro sd as well as dual sim to a Xiaomi phone on YouTube. Have a look around, seemed to work for both sims as well as reading memory card at the same time. Is it worth mucking around for the few months left of 2G for Optus and one year on Voda?

Depends how important this is to you. I'm in same boat, love the bang for buck Xiaomi phones, but also like Aus warranty, dual 4G/3G + memory card, as well as cleaner skin and possibly more upgrades. Just waiting for price to drop a bit more :-)

  • Do JB and HN price match Mobileciti?

    • +4

      Officeworks no:

      Policy

      What items are excluded?
      Cash back and coupon offers

      Also OW only have black.

      JB Hi-Fi don't sell G4 Plus

      Harvey Norman no:

      Policy

      What are the exclusions?
Competitors that do not operate multi-store omnichannel retail operations

      Also HN only have black.

      The Good Guys no:

Their 30 day price guarantee only covers ‘bricks and mortar store’ within 30km of the relevant The Good Guys store and they'd have an issue that it's not an advertised offer anyway (coupon).

      Also TGG only have black.

Basically you won't get anyone matching an eBay price with a coupon, Officeworks would match the regular eBay price only which can still work out okay but not really worth paying more for.

      tl;dr = no

      • Thank you.

Do you happen to know whether JB price matches other products from Mobileciti?

        • +2

JB Hi-Fi don't have a price match policy as such, so it's up to the store/salesperson if they match it. I believe they generally match major retailers with physical stores but for online stores I wouldn't be so sure, matching a promo like this on eBay and with a coupon code I would imagine there would be almost no chance unless the price wasn't great. You can always ask over the phone for whatever item if they'll beat a price for an Aus online store, they would probably say yes or no based on the price itself.

        • @hamza23: Cheers mate thanks

  • Bought one of these from Harvey Norman last week for $349.00 Very good phone.

  • +3

Get HN to match TGG $329. Pay with AMEX for $100 rebate.

    • +1

      This is excellent advice.

      • +2

Thanks. Just managed to do a price march now at HN. No dramas at all. And immediate confirmation email from AMEX.

    • Amx deal is for pure amx cards or can be used via bank issued amx cards?

  • -3

Pretty average deal, Amazon are doing it for around $235 AUD - https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01DZJFYLC/ref=olp_t….

They're not shipping to Australia, but with that price I think you could find cheaper than $299 AUD soon.

    • Whats's point if they are not shipping. The price on Amazon.in is ~$300 for 3GB/32GB, but not accessible.
