  • why do you guys not include the model number?

    • Its there at the top in bold text

      12.1” Asus Slim HD Netbook - 1201PN

Or if you click on product specs you get the full model

      Model: 1201PN-SIV021M

  • I think that the $599 13" C2D HP from MLN will own this "beast"…too bad its no longer available :p

Its just a bit too much money for an Atom based, borderline notebook size product…

  • I suspect teh $599 13" C2D would not have anywhere near as much battery life as the netbook on N450?

    • True…but there's always going to be a tradeoff between performance and batt life. I know for a unit in this price range I'd prefer performance…if I needed battery life I'll go buy a $300 netbook…

    DEAL? YES
    BARGAIN? NO

  • +1

"Beast" is overstating it, with a single core Atom processor. If it was dual core ULV I might be more impressed

    • Its a completely different deal

      • -2

So the two deals on your site dont deserve a separate page ie the main page linked, yet you need 2 bargain posts for 2 different products for the same sale ??

its todays catch right, so what you wanna put everyone of your small fish up aswell ?

        • +3

I just posted this deal, someone else posted the other.

For all I care you can delete it. I've probably posted 4 deals in the last year, and now I'm a spammer - OK :)

        • +4

I posted the other deal, i left this one out because i wasn't sure if this was good enough of a deal. I see nothing wrong with posting 2 seperate posts as they are completely different products.

  • doesn't look like a bargain to me. In fact, it looks very overpriced for what you get.

  • Its the eeepc 1201. ASUS kind of took a step in the wrong direction with this new addition to the eeepc line. 12" screen is nice but going from 11hr battery life (eeepc1005) to a measly 6hrs is a real deal breaker for me. This eeepc is truely sitting on the line between laptop and netbook…. It's going for $799 at Myers so yeah $190 off and delivered to your door is pretty good! Its a shame I alreasy snapped up somethin else in the rush of eofy =/

    • -3

but does that make it a bargain, just because it is even MORE expensive at Myers ?! not in my opinion !

      • Well for that price I'd say it is…. 190 off a 799 product is like a 25 percent discount! Tell me thats not a bargain…. Anyway you can't really compare it to other net books as the screen is 2 inches bigger, extra ram and better gpu… I guess we all have our opinions =)

        • Since when does Myers technology become a comparable place for bargain price ? its not known as a good place to go for discount IT products. Or for Price matching

Because you think the product is a good deal does not mean it is the truth. I am not saying this is a good price but its like comparing buying apples from Coles compared to the markets

          • @Mikinoz: I never said it was. I'm just using the retail/normal price at myers as a basis to calculate the discount. I still believe it to be a good deal, and Id snap it up if I still needed a net book…

EDIT: FYI cheapest unit on staticice is $789 from Justek (Austin no longer have it listed). That's before postage too. That can be the price you "compare" to.

Amazon US sell this for $478 inc delivery.

    at 0.85 exchange, that's AU$562.

Model specs aside, when you consider what consumers pay for this product overseas, COTD's price isn't a bargain it is merely bringing Aus consumers in line with the rest of the world.

    • You can't really say that though… A lot of things in America are a lot cheaper than in Australia! Yet on ozbargain these are considered to be bargains… A recent example would be those logitechshop headphones that were snapped up pretty damn quick! Anyway 562 n 609… I'd pay the difference for faster delivery and a local place I can make returns if things go south… Plus customs may slug u with tax!

Australians really need to get out of this "she'll be right mate" mindset. Just because it is a bargain "compared to Australian prices" - doesn't mean it is good value ! Your comment re: Myer's pricing sums it up really.

Look at what you're getting for this deal, compared to the other COTD net book deal. You're paying approx $330 more for:

        1) 1gb extra ram. Lets say, $30 value.
        2) 160gb extra HDD space. Again lets say $30 value.
        3) a 12" screen and ION2 graphics.

Is the 12" and ION2 really worth an extra approx $270???!

        • +2

Using your definition of a bargain, not much on ozbargain would be a bargain in your eyes. Have you considered that the other netbook deal is better than the eepc1201n, hence inflating your value margin? Also, ever notice how newer things are usually more expensive? The older eeepc is exactally that, OLDER, hence cheaper. The eeepc2101n is NEWER, hence more expensive. Things aren't always cheaper because of value, other factors come into play too.

I've said before that you cannot compare it to other nebooks as it essentially isn't really in the 10" netbook class as the 12" screen is bigger and has a higher resolution. Anyway, if you really want to compare apples and oranges of the the cost of an increased 2", lets use Dell monitors as an example: U2211H for $299 and U2410 for $699. That's a $400 difference for 2".

I'm sorry QQQ you're just gonna have to dump the price a couple more hundred to satisfy this fella. Hell, why not just make it free =D

          • -1

@eva04: "using my definition of bargain"??! doesn't matter what I alone think, or you for that matter.

The proof is in the pudding. If you want to work out what the word "bargain" means, then spend some time reviewing the most popular deals. Then come back to this one which has 9 positive votes.

            • +1

@clandestino: So your definition of a bargain has now changed to the popularity of a product? I see 17 positives (making the ozbargain main page) and the item is almost sold out. The proof really is in the pudding isn't it clandestino…

      • you need to add another $400 before customs slugs you with tax … the amount is $1000 b4 tax comes into play

        • I stand corrected =)

        • Thats $1000 including the shipping charge

    N450 with Ion2…

This is what you compare it too, other netbook class machines

Not a thirsty C2D - its a completely different product

Its basically a good looking media capable netbook, and its cheap - compared to Australian options

"The 1201N is a new type of netbook — although we aren't even sure it should be called a netbook, since it's more like a full-fledged laptop. Regardless of what you call it, at $499 the Eee PC 1201N quelled our netbook frustrations by delivering a more comfortable computing experience and far superior multimedia performance than its 10-inch brethren. It offers neither the stamina of a netbook nor the performance of a $600 ULV laptop, but it's a solid compromise between the two, and we're extremely happy with it. Just make sure you pack a spare battery or two."

      http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/18/asus-eee-pc-1201n-review/

Pretty much sums up this netbook for me…the part which states: It offers neither the stamina of a netbook nor the performance of a $600 ULV laptop…

  • The processor is a massive let down on this model. I have no idea why Asus decided to go with an outdated single core Atom (vs. dual core ULV, i.e. the SU series).

  • +1

I have N330 in a HTPC at home and it's enough for productivity but just barely.
    Whilst Asus 1201N (dual-core N330/Ion1/12") is a stupendous entry-level low-power dual-core notebook, this 1201PN (single-core N450/Ion2/12") is neither notebook nor netbook. (Unlike Ion1 with N330) Ion2 wasn't fully incompatible with N450 because of Intel's bus re-design, so, this is a bastard-child of sorts.
COTD, why didn't you give us 1201N???

  • Question: Overall, is this worth buying? Or would you go with something else rather for that price?

    • If you're looking for a netbook-like computer that's light, portable, but slightly more powerful and with a slightly larger screen/keyboard, then this is it. I've played with one and it is above netbook performance, don't expect it to be ULV-fast. Battery life isn't bad, but the Ion is kinda let down by the Atom processor.

  • as mentioned this is really strange combo of spec, the ion2 power would no where near fully utilized by the piss weak n450, so paying extra for unused potential seems weird.

  • The 10" is a great price, too bad I don't need a netbook :) The other $300 ones are pretty much all older processers or have 3 cell batteries, plus this new one looks good.

12" is far too expensive for what you get - it's laptop pricing for a netbook. Like someone else wrote above, $270 more for hardly anything extra.

  • hey catchoftheday! the ASUS 10.1" netbook which model is it? no model name? n450 is the name of the chip..

  • +1

Hi COTD, please change the price to $499 and I will buy one : )

  • u can bring back home a dual core with $609…

  • Can the poster confirm that this definitely has 2 years warranty??

I thought all Asus Netbooks only had 1 year.

I know they have 2 years on all their regular machines and 1 year on their EEE PCs…

    So…

  • I wonder if this will be on sale again. What else is around like this?
