Long time user but first time deal post, let me know if I did anything wrong.

Found this one on Kotaku, seemed like a pretty decent deal for the price, their catalog is quite good.

1 year 33% off at $24 USD ($31.40 AUD), normally $36 USD ($47.10 AUD) https://stacksocial.com/sales/selecttv-1-year-subscription
3 year 54% off at $49 USD ($64.11 AUD), normally $100 USD ($130.83 AUD) https://stacksocial.com/sales/selecttv-3-year-subscription

  • Never heard of it tbh, curious to hear other's experiences…

  • This is my understanding.

You need a VPN to access content

You can buy a month from their site for $2.99 to try it.

I'm not entirely sure if its meant for people outside US, but I guess it will work.

    • Worked with an Australian credit card to sign up for the US $3/month thing. They mention VPNs on the front page ("travel mode")!

Weasely wording around the "live" channels makes me think this is really different from Sling, though.

it collects free content and aggregates it into it's own service. For paid content, you need to get your own seperate account to that particular service.

I like the way it says 300,000+ movies (10,000+ free) - I could just imagine the quality of the free ones.

    • Yeah, a bit scammy - started pulling up bad YouTube copies of things out of the TV guide.

Edit: hahaha, asked for Burgers, Brew and Que and got Barefoot Contessa literally in an iframe from Food Network US.

May as well watch SBS Food Network. Glad I'm only out 3 USD.

  • Gizmodo is constantly posting articles about this service, using a referral link with comments disabled..

This is not a worthy deal at all in my opinion.

I purchased a one year subscription of SelectTV after reading Gizmodo a few months ago and thought it was a good deal, but actually using the service (for only a couple of days) has left me feeling rather disappointed.

The first issue came with buying the subscription through the StackSocial website. Once I paid for the registration, activating the generated code to use SelectTV did not work properly and I had to message SelectTV customer support for assistance. (StackSocial is a third party affiliate)

    Once I got it working, more issues arose. As mentioned above;
    1) The content is geo blocked, meaning you have to use a VPN for access. 2) Most of the 'free' content you can find on Youtube or other websites, and sometimes in better quality. 3) The paid content requires you to have a subscription service to other services e.g. Hulu. 4) Using the website itself is often slow and isn't user-friendly when selecting channels.

I was also disappointed by Gizmodo's lack of integrity in referring deals such as these. They post articles about this service every now and then (as they receive funds for referral no doubt) but fail to mention disclaimers and disable making user comments - other users are unaware of any issues before they purchase the product.

TL;DR - Don't waste your money on SelectTV like I did.

    • Damn :( Thought I did good, thanks for the info, friend :)

  • Yeah this service is very scammy. Appeared on lifehacker too. Shame on them
