Typical of the - Correction: Bligh Govt - to disadvantage people who do the right thing. Everyone from my household will miss out on the free $10 credit because we signed up for a GO card when it was implemented intially. They should have done this promotion at the start to encourage people to try out the GO card, not leave it till now for the lazy people who couldn't be bothered to get one before to benefit from it!

Yeah I'm in the same boat. Those of us who are Go Card 'pioneers' and put up with all the teething problems and overcharging were forced to pay $10 for the privilege without any travel credit. In the meantime they put up fares by 15% every year and then make us regret getting our Go Cards by giving away 400,000 with $10 travel credit for free.

…PS it's not the Council it's the Bligh Gov'ts doing.

    • +1

With many things about the Bligh govt that dissapoint me, this is actually a really great initiative. I'm in the same bag as I alreeady have a registered card.

However the bigger picture is that the only way we will get a really good public transport system in Brisbane is by finding the incentives to get heaps more people out of their damaging and unsustainable-life-style cars and into buses, trains and bikes. In my view this sort of incentive scheme is headed in that direction in a proactive and innovative way.

I still curse Brisbane's current mayor for his tunnel obsession and his destruction of the dedicated bus-lanes and tidal-flow system on Coro Drive. The tunnels have put the city into debt for years to come favouring only private vehicle usage. Is this Campbell's "tunnel-vision" or his "tunnel-web"?

These car-focussed tunnels are anti-thetical to strong and environmentally viable public transport. Campbell has hocked the city to build the tunnels rather than investing in extra public transport resources. If only five percent of the tunnel funds had gone into the city buying more buses then we wouldn't have so many over-packed buses driveing past stops with no room to collect thousands of peak hour passengers. And the latest and brightest tunnel is in its third month with traffic a whole 66% below projections - only 20,000 per day instead of 60,000.

And by the way - it is the council not the state govt that "put up fares by 15% every year". Our fares are more expensive because of the car tunnels.

Promoting the Go cards with this incentive will help to break the boarding wait and help to get more people thinking of the public transport alternative. With a card in their wallet or purses they have one less disincentive or excuse.

I am Sorry SW but I absolutely disagree with your comments in relation to the tunnel and putting 5% into buying more buses… I HATE with a passion having to drive into uni around peak hour (which is almost the whole day now) because of the amount of traffic that is built up due to so many vehicles. The tunnel at least puts a percentage out of the city and although they would like more to use it, I would fear greatly if it wasn't there and more buses were built and put into the city… It would be like Sydney traffic except 10 times worse! It takes an hour or so to get home during peak hour as it is and 30mins of that is just getting out of the city…

I am glad that a tunnel was built to try reduce the traffic - Why QLD got rid of Trams is beyond my understanding, it would have been far better to get the buses out! Melbourne public Transport and city "BEEP" all over our city Brisbane and it's public transport shambles!!

In relation to the Bligh Government - I blame QLD public for being so dumb in electing her as premier!! I thought we were suppose to be the SMART state.. At least we have one thing to cheer about, or should I say 5. The mighty QLD maroons!! 5 straight!!! Ohh YEAH!! :)

  • Thanks for the correction… Bligh Govt is terrible!

  • +1

Can we just apply for a second card for the free credit?

  • I'm moving to Goldcoast in a couple of months time, do you think I'd be eligible for the free card? (and how can I get the application form in NSW lol)

    • a card is not expensive anyway if you miss out… the card is free but you gotta put in $5 deposit for students or $10 for adults. the deposit's there in case e.g. you can still hop on the bus when your card has only 1 cent, and when you touch off it might be -$1.08.

last time i got off the amazing rip off airtrain and forgot to touch off. when i got on a bus for a continued transfer the reader displayed -$25 and I was like WTF!? So I basically just got a new card instead of topping up that old one :P

  • $10 FREE? its better than VIC government, who only giving $0 myki card!!

    • +1

The difference is in VIC they offered them when they had just launched the scheme. In QLD they waited a few years and only now are they promoting them like this when everyone has one already.

    • and…totally zip…NIL in SA :(
Guess time for me to leave this state :p

      • SA is getting smartcards soon. They have already announced the winning tender.

  • +1

how do they know I don't have a goCard… lol

good to see that they're doing this. i really hate the people who spend so much time buying single journey tickets EVERYDAY when they get to uni and delay the bus for everyone else. last time i saw a woman who took out a $50 note and it took the driver 5 minutes to get the change. >:(

    • Depends if you registered your existing card I guess. I think the green concession cards have to be registered?

      • i got mine (the concession one) at a uni newsagent and i just showed them my student card and they were like yeah that's fine here you go :D

note: this probably won't work at any other newsagents other than uni ones… and bus drivers don't check for concession ID anyway. Our student IDs also have built-in RFID tags so the reader can't recognise a go Card if you put your student card & go card together, i.e. student card in wallet, go card in the plastic sleeve that came with.

some people even just put their go cards in the side compartment of their bags and just touch on straight from the bag :D

  • NB - as per OP - registration/applications don't open till 28 June.

  • sucks that the yellow card is the childs one, i want a yellow card :(

    • +1

sucks not being a child isn't it? anyway they should work with Unis in SEQ to integrate the RFID chips into student cards. This way we carry 1 less card and much more "loophole" proof for identification purposes. And you can't put your student card and go card together coz the touch on/off reader won't recognise it since there's also an RFID tag in student cards.

    • I'm sure there's nothing wrong with decorating it with stickers or even if you dunked it in some paint it will probably still work.

  • Bit of a kick in the pants for the early adopters!

  • Do I have to live in Qld to be eligible for this offer? Not clear.

    • Yes - it's in their terms and conditions

  • You can theoretically get $20 CASH from this giveaway deal… but for the sake of other Queenslanders don't do it.

Think about it. They don't really lose money for you to sit in their buses for free, apart from making these cards and posting them. BTW I once got an "exclusive" ride to uni with no one else on the bus :D chauffeur-driven bus FTW!

So in other words, when you get on the bus, the fare gets debited from the preloaded $10 and is stated that when you finish it you just need to top it up at a newsagent.

The theory is that if you take your unused card to a newsagent for a refund/return you will get $20 in cash, $10 from the preloaded credit and $10 from the deposit (remember that when you get a go card you put in a deposit as well)! Then if you're a concession card holder put that money into your go card and will be good for a week's worth of fares.

But really just don't do it because like my mate he's not bothered to get one so this would be a good time to get one and start using it.

    • +2

I'm sure they will have some sort of note on it to not refund the deposit.

    • The deposit on adult go cards is now $5.

If you purchased an adult go card before 2 December 2009, your $10 deposit will remain valid, and can be refunded to you in full once you complete and return the
