I don't need to replace my N54L microserver… but, on the other hand, I don't not need to replace it.

    Damn you, ozb.

    • Went through this about a year ago … but with an N40L … Bit the bullet, its certainly a lovely replacement, although still running both now the N40L is relegated to backup only tasks.

      • Also in the same situation as looking to upgrade my N40L.

Did you notice a significant difference?

Only using mine to backup files and run as a Plex server but remote access and moving any files over the network or via USB is painfully slow. It's stock though so no RAM upgrades and the OS is on standard SATA drive.

        • how about just get a USB 3 pci-e card? i was thinking about that too.

        • +1

I went from a n36L (I think) to a gen8. The cpu doesn't feel much better, but it is possible to upgrade to a low power xeon. I think I have 2GB in the old one and 16GB in the new one.

I miss having a full 5.25" bay for the cd-rom (easier to replace with another hdd). The gen8 has a thin dvd slot and you need a molex to sata power cable to get a ssd in there.

Unless your cpu is the bottleneck I can't imagine you will see much of a difference.

        • +2

Found plex transcoding at 1080p a lot smoother obviously on the microserver. It depends what quality eps your are using it for. 720p no difference - both performed fine.

I like the ilo interface and double network ports on the microserver over the n40l. The small form factor for the cd drive doesnt trouble me as I use a 2.5 hdd for OMV.

All in all its a nice new toy to play with :) Doesnt offer anything drastically great but with the plethora of hdd deals lately who doesnt need a new fileserver.

        • @pw2002au: That's a good point about ILO, it is very very useful. Actually it removes the need for an optical drive, as you can always just ILO in and use the optical drive on a remote PC.

        • @pw2002au: Thinking of buying it for Plex use. How does it handle 1080p hi10p and x265 (hevc) transcoding, do you know?

If needed, you can find some hi10p samples at https://www.koi-sama.net/files/hi10/
and some HEVC samples at https://x265.com/hevc-video-files/

        • @pw2002au:

          Thank for sharing your experience.

Tempting given the price but still trying to justify the upgrade if there little difference in overall performance and considering I don't really need to transcode above 1080p as I normally settle for 720p to reduce extra space on the HDD.

Plus my N40L only goes on when I need it on the weekend so should still have some life left. Might consider installing a USB 3.0 card, upgrading the RAM and moving to an SSD for the OS if I don't take the plunge on this.

      • N40L can support five or more drives though that's the only advantage I reckon.

Any way the dvd drive on this unit can be replaced with a SSD for the OS ?

        • The DVD drive is not a drive, it's just a bay. And the bay can fit an SSD, you just need the right cable. Lots of people use a small SSD as a system drive and keep the main drive bays for data.

        • @lionelhutz: ah cool that's what I do with my N40l. Thanks for the reply.

        • I'm running the N40L with 6 hard drives + 1 SSD. Don't think these new models can support that, unfortunately. Removes the temptation to upgrade.

        • @lmh86: I guess for plex transcoding it's tempting but as a file server or media player the N40l does the trick.

BTW I haven't managed to successfully power another drive with the esata to sata cable I bought. Any suggestions with what you used?

        • @lmh86: Correct. There is a mod which can bring the G8 to 4+2 drives but not 7.

        • Any idea where to get a cheap dvd drive? Standard slim dvd's dont fit btw. Its a HP slim one (7.5mm from memory.. ?)

      • How does the noise compare? I have an N40L which is pretty quiet, I've heard the newer ones are louder?

        • Mine are both behind a cupboard door - no real noticable difference in decibels to my old ears.

    • +5

i need to replace my microwave

      • +4

Worth considering replacing that with the microserver at this price

    • Wasnt the deal on the weekend $239+delivery ?

      Hope mine arrives soon.

    • Just a note - if you want to replace the CPU on the G8, the low power Xeons can be very hard to source these days and very expensive. The optimal one is the E3-1265L which is almost impossible to find.

        eBay & OzBargain… making professionals poor…

  • How many 3.5" drives can you jam into this? The N54L could accommodate 6 (I think) with the right brackets.

    • It has four 3.5" internal bay slots, and room in the ODD bay for a 2.5" drive connected to the fifth SATA port on the motherboard.

    • There is a bracket (Schoondoggy) that lets you squeeze six 3.5" drives into a gen8, but two of them have to be low-height. Simpler is 4x 3.5" HDD and 1x 2.5" SSD in the optical bay.

The gen8 has some other gotchas. Google for the "gen8 fan raid" and "gen8 odd hdd usb". They're easy problems to solve, but be aware of them going in.

      • This is incorrect, the bracket allows for the mounting of an extra two 2.5" drives, or one 3.5" thin drive.

        • You are correct. Thanks for catching that mistake.

Shame you guys dont sell the Synology DS416play on ebay. Would be keen on buying one.

We just had new stock come in, so we added it to eBay for you :)

      • Thanks for that. I placed an order for two incorrect drives by mistake and sent you a message on ebay to cancel the order so I could reorder again.

If you could look into it, that would be awesome. Ill reorder again

      • +6

        Hi,

Just confirming is the above eBay link to the ds416play any different to the one listed on your website for $563.95? (Link below)

        http://www.warehouse1.com.au/epages/shop.mobile/?ObjectPath=…

        • ouch!

        • +2

No, they are same product. Since "eBay" is paying buyer $100 voucher, they want to make more profit with it.

        • +1

I saw this on google and wanted to see what was the best price they could offer on Ebay. Clearly, taking into account the $100 voucher, ebay seems to be a rip off

    Hi Guys,

Any special OzB movement on WD 4TB Reds or the DS1815+? :)

    Thanks!

Anything closer to your website listed price would be awesome!

      • Sorry guys, synology and WD we are hard pressed to do any more.

        • Thanks for the response :)

Any deals on 4TB and upwards internal 3.5"s??

  • Figured how to use the "click and collect".

  • Anyone else getting an error saying 'this page is no longer supported by this mobile device' when using the links? It suggests using a number of phones including a Nexus….which I have (6P).

  • How does this Microserver compare to hp proliant ml10 v2 ?

    • You can fit more into the HPML10V2

    • Form factor is a bit different. More powerful uses more power though as well.

    • +2

      Micro server Gen 8
      Pros -
      Smaller
RAID is much easier to configure.
      Good support for hardware
      3 NIC (1 for ILO)

      Cons
      Less Dimms
Less Hard Drives (physical capacity due to size)
Heat issues with upgrading to Xeons

      ML10 V2

      Pros
Can take more RAM 4 DIMMS vs 2.
      32GB of RAM
      6 SATA ports 2 x 6Gbs and 4x 3Gbs
      More powerful power supply 350W
      More expansion slots

      Cons
      Size is a 4U
Initially can be difficult to setup.
      Not well documented for setup.

      Negligible for both.

Power consumption - 43-44 watts for microserver with 3 hdd and usb for os.
      - 47-48 Watts for ML10V2 with 4 HDD and 2 SSD (running a more powerful cpu)

Noise - Both are noisy on start up - after start up both are pretty quite in RAID - AHCI mode is apparently noisy haven't tested this personally though.

      • @bradsmrbetty, are these power consumption your own measured figures?

        • Yes, from my two systems.
          ML10v2 is my primary server
Microserver Gen 8 is freenas backup

        • @bradsmrbetty:

          Re: ML10v2

Do you know how to make ssd to boot from the optical sata port? Can't get windows 10 to boot in AHCI mode.

        • @vash12:
The only way I know is to use it in a raid array with a single drive.
So no I haven't managed to get to boot in AHCI mode.

        • @bradsmrbetty: Thanks for the reply, can I assume you upgraded the microserver to a Xeon CPU but kept the stock G3240 CPU on the ML10v2? Which explains why the power consumption isn't that far apart?

One other question, which OS are you running on the two servers?

        • @cold bricks:
No, the Microserver is stock apart from adding a second 2GB stick of RAM.
I didn't undervolt the CPU on the microserver for that test, but for memory the undervolted difference was small on idle, and it hit peak too often like my older N40L.

The ML10V2 has an upgraded CPU Intel i3 4170.

You have to remember that the GEN 8 is 3rd Gen Intel and ML10V2 is 4th,
          Must be some increased efficiency.

Microserver Gen 8 is a Freenas
          ML10V2 is Windows Server 2012

        • @bradsmrbetty:

          • 47-48 Watts for ML10V2 with 4 HDD and 2 SSD. Is that when your server is idling or peak?
        • @vash12: My best guess is that would be idle power consumption, but I assume for home use that it would be idle for most of the day anyway.

My research on the ML10v2 power consumption has led me to a number of sites:
          47.19W IDLE - G3240 (stock CPU) - link
          52-65W IDLE - Xeon E3 1220v3 - link
Various CPU/HDD configs link (Just use Google translate if you need to)

  • —— 8TB Seagate Backup Plus, reduced down to $349 - is now up by $50 - $ 399 now
Store Rep - can you please edit the price in the description

    • fixed back to 349, internal miscommunication. :)

      • cool thanks

      • +1

The 4TB works out slightly cheaper than the 8TB.

So this is $238 including shipping from Warehouse1 website?

    • +1

Yeah that is what I paid on weekend ……so 238 and $50 voucher is better than $300 and $100 voucher ……. Best Deal would have been $238 , extra 4gb memory and a filler to get it $300 if Price needed to be revised

  • Any deal on Arlo security camera?

I have one of these in use as a NAS, they are awesome.
Use the following link to see how to install an SSD as your boot drive -
    http://homeservershow.com/attaching-a-ssd-to-the-odd-sata-po…
To get power to the SSD - order this part - http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-Dell-MX714-Floppy-FDD-to-Sat…
Don't muck around trying to find another seller for the Dell part. They are extremely hard to find.

    • Do you need to change the boot order to get it going?

      • Just install the OS on a dedicated SSD first. Then add your data disks.
You DO need to go into the BIOS to initialise the disks so the OS will see them. A bit of a pain, but it is a server.

    • What OS are you using if you don't mind me asking?.

I wouldn't mind setting one up as a NAS as well to replace my old qnap which only supports 2tb HDD's.

Want to use it to back up photos etc.

      • Windows 7 Pro. It is a REAL pain to set up Anonymous sharing on Windows 7 to allow easy access for my WDTV boxes to run my videos etc.
I have the dedicated SSD for the OS.
        4 x 4TB internal disks for storage
4 x 4TB external USB drives for backup

        • Thanks mate.

    • I suppose worse case is to splice your own adapter. Considering these cables are pretty thick so even the most useless soldering people (like me) can do it..

    • +2

For those wanting to install an additional 2.5" drive in their ODD bay, I would recommend sourcing a Molex splitter and Molex to SATA cable locally instead, the Dell FDD to SATA adapter is overpriced and is unnecessary.

      • Each their own. I am a software tech, not big on fricking around too much with hardware. The Dell FDD to SATA is a nice clean simple solution.

        • Understandable, but a real OzBargainer would do their research. ;)

        • @tranqme:
Ha… cheaper… fine if you are happy to wait up to one month for postage.
The Dell one took about a week from the US.

    • thank you for the links, I've been meaning to do this for a while

    • I ended up buying 5!; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/222024449591
they work really well - I have 4 spare, if you're in Perth and need one or more, let me know

      fwiw on usage:
N40L +8gb +5 HDD, Win 2012R2, software raid 5, great quiet media server for XBMC/Kodi etc
      Gen 8 1610T +16gb +4 HDD + 1 SSD, Win 2012R2 with HyperV role, CPU makes a massive difference over N40L

  • Planning to get the NUC for my mom, any chance you could schedule a November SSD sale so I can make use of the voucher? Thanks rep.

  • Thoughts on using this as a Plex server with 2-4 drives? I do have some 4K media, but not much. Mostly 1080p compressed.

Streaming to 2 different tvs at most.

Currently run Plex through my PC, don't use it every night, so wondering whether the value is there?

    • That's exactly what I use it for. It's not a powerful CPU but it handles streaming HD content fine. Not sure about 4K, I've never tried that.

If you are running Plex on your PC already, the main advantage of a dedicated server is that it is on all the time - so it is always ready when anyone wants to watch Plex. This also makes it practical to use Plex DVR because you can record content any time of the day or night and not worry about whether your PC is on. Also it gives Plex access to massive disk storage with redundancy and all that stuff.

  • Hi Store Rep, "Sorry guys, synology and WD we are hard pressed to do any more", I'm sorry too!

Why are there 3 different prices for the WD60EFRX on your eBay site…358$, 359 and 387?

  • +1

quality deal shame i bought that tablet

  • Oh nice. I think I might get that printer!

  • Make sure you click click and collect to qualify for vouchers. When I opened the links, I could not see that option for some reason. Searching same item from the previous deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/270891 worked fine.

  • Hi Store Rep,

What's the difference between the two Intel NUC i3 Mini PC's?

    —— 2 x Intel NUC i3 Models reduced down to $389 each

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=252532…

    Cheers

    • If you look at the links..

One is fat and one is skinny

Fat one has SATA, skinny one doesn't only has m.2.

Obviously I'm not the store rep.

      • Hey Guys,.

        Correct.

ending in SYK = M.2 only.

Ending in SYH = Sata AND M.2

        :)

  • Note: As far as I remember, there is a way of upgrading the processor on the Microserver Gen8 to a i3 3240. Obviously it will void the warranty, and you might need some extra cooling, but …

Other Socket 1155 processors may also work (even i5-3470T).

Quad Core+HT Low Power Xeon with ECC will also work. Good luck on finding one new though..

      • I've only been dabbling so far with my Gen 8 microserver, but have upgraded with a E3-1270 V2 CPU, 250GB SSD, 16gb ram.
Running Esxi 6 r2 off an SD card. Was running 4x VM's but it was a bit slow, hence the CPU upgrade ($329 off ebay for a 2nd hand one).

        • @tazmaniak, just curious to know what file server OS are you running on top of ESXI?

        • @cold bricks:
Only been playing so far… running the following:
          2012 domain for AD/DHCP/DNS
          Sophos UTM for firewall etc
Xpenology for NAS and media streaming. I set up an iSCSI lun from the nas to the 2012 server originally but it was too small. Currently trying to get a new 4TB drive initialised in esxi but having issues.

Seems I can't get passthrough working when my VM's are sitting on the same controller as the drive I want to use. I'm not adding a separate controller so will probably need to get RDM working. More study needed…

        • @tazmaniak: Is your Xpenology on DSM v6? I've been doing some reading up on DSM6, BTRFS and bitrot, it just seems it isn't quite ready yet even on official synology hardware.
May end up going with Freenas+ZFS but your issues with ESXI and passthrough means I too need to do more study.

        • @cold bricks:
I think it might be on 5.2 offhand. I used XPEnoboot I'm pretty sure. Last night I threw the controller on to AHCI instead of RAID, so now my 4TB drive is working. I haven't checked fan noise, which is apparently increased when using AHCI - not fussed really because I'm using a 69W cpu so extra airflow can only be good.
Feel free to PM me with any questions or let me know how you go with it - same for any others out there.
I'm no expert but have done a fair bit of tinkering and reading!

  • Hi Store Rep,

Can you do any promo on Seagate [ST4000VN000] NAS HDD 4TB 5900RPM SATA II 3.5" 64MB?

    Thanks.

  • Pardon my ignorance:

Do pp buy microserver for home use ? What are the use cases? Do you need to be a IT professionals to set up one?
