  • for the lifetime of the service

    • and if it lasts a year and you get decent service for that year then its not a bad deal.

I'm trying to find a replacement for PIA which was going to cost me $50 a year to renew, but i want a socks5 proxy as well.

      • +1

You can get it for $30 / yr if you use 2 telstra prepaid half price packs

        • if you use 2 telstra prepaid half price packs

No idea what that means, but i presume id have to be with telstra for mobile which im not.

        • @TrendyTim:
wait until the telstra prepaid starter packs go on sale from coles/woolies for $15
buy 2 and activate them, then do a balance transfer to one of the sims so then you have 0 on one sim and $60 ($58.50 after fees)
then you can use it to buy a year subscription of vpn through google play/apple app store probably

        • @tony abbott:
Interesting, though the iOS PIA app doesnt seem to allow the in app purchases (despite it claiming it does), ill keep it in mind though, thanks

Last time i paid for Lifetime VPN it got cancelled after 1 year.

    • Did they give you the reason?

  • +1

Does anyone know if we (Australia) should still use vpn with torrent sites. Thanks

    • In no way should you use any torrent service to access illegal content.

Currently Australia has (meta)data retention laws in force. By using a vpn you will limit the visible metadata to the vpn server information. This is of course assuming no VPN leaks or disconnects.

    • -2

No need at present (Data Retention does not retain this information).

      • +1

Currently information such as ip address is retained. This can be used to prove you did or didn't make a connection to an "illicit ip address".

        • That information has always been retained, read the Telecommunications Act.

It doesn't prove you either, it merely proves your connection endpoint. Which could easily be - Hola (exit node), a visitor, a tech savvy neighbour, a hacker or malware, etc etc.

No court in Australia at this point in time is going to take an IP Address as proof of Copyright Infringement seriously especially with the former precedents.

If you want to safeguard your online privacy it's probably best to use a VPN.

This - https://ipleak.net/ - is good for basic testing your connection.

  • VPN Unlimited is terrible: it is slow and the way to access it is annoying.
(I have a 5-year subscription that I never use because it is so bad)

    • Mind explaining the access methods?

      • You need to use their app to access the service. I have their lifetime service as well for a couple of years now, so it's paid for itself I guess. Some of their servers are slow, others are not too bad. Don't expect PIA speeds from them. I just use them to stream from South East Asia and they are OK for those places. I still use them on my phone and tablet for casual browsing. It is mostly for backup these days

Their OSX app is pretty horrible.

        • Although their app is terrible, it's not the only way to access their service. You can send an email to their support and they will send you the .ovpn files so you can use the base OpenVPN client. If you have a router that can run DD-WRT or Tomato then they have guides for setting that up, or if you want something a little more complicated I use them as an interface on my pfSense box which allows me to specify all traffic goes through it expect machines I configure specifically to direct connect, or you can specify per site whether you want direct or via VPN.

As for speed, using their Romanian server when backing up my legitimate content via torrents I peak out at about 1Mbyte / sec on a 12Mbit DSL (I soft cap it in Deluge at 750Kbyte/sec which it happily bumps the limiter of all day)

I was with PIA previously but there was some bungle with the account where it was given to someone else, then that person's account details were sent to me (probably shouldn't be using his US university email address, makes him very easy to identify). Had VPN Unlimited for a year (on a 3 year plan) and I find it plods along fine, support is quick to reply (though not overly helpful on complicated issues) and they are Russian (if that bothers you).

tl;dr for the price they seem functional.

  • i was planning to buy it and i am using its trails for last weeks, Melbourne server was really good but its gone. I have asked them if it will be up again and got an answer that it will take 48 hours to be back again but its been 4 days and still no signs of it. Sydney server also works well but in Melbourne it increases ping time and sometimes it gets really really slow.

  • Speaking of VPN's, I'm due for a renewal. I've used something like http://www.vpnlist.net/ to try out services.
I've used CyberGhost, and am currently on ExpressVPN.
Can anyone make recommendations / suggestions?
Would prefer local entry/exit and high speeds.
    Thanks!

I have found out f-secure Freedome and Vypervpn are the best.

    • +1

Private Internet Access (good price is $40 for 2 years, usually more)

    • +1

I currently use Open VPN with DD WRT router, using PrivateInternetAccess and i get 45Mbit connection connected to an Melbourne server

      Im happy with it.

      My ISP connection is 93Mbit.

  • Shouldn't OzBargain have some sort of policy against listing ponzi style fraud schemes in the form of a VPN service?

  • FWIW, I have a lifetime VPN Unlimited subscription that I've been using for a couple of years now. I haven't tried any other providers so can't compare. I do know that most of the time I am maxing out my connection. When it slows down, it is usually because the server is overloaded. Disconnecting and connecting elsewhere usually resolves this issue.

It should be pointed out that although torrents are allowed, you can only do so from a select few servers. If your primary purpose for getting this is for torrenting, I would probably look at another provider.

As for the application, it works well enough. I have it installed and running 24x7 on a Server 2012 box. It will occasionally disconnect itself. This usually occurs when the server is idle so it doesn't bother me.

Ditto. The Android app is much better than it used to be but still sometimes crashes. On Win 10 I just use the built-in VPN connection.
It works fine but I don't do heavy downloads with it.
