did you get Lost?
almost did when chased by Pirates
Wait what?
Hawaii, in particular the island of Kauai has been used as a filming location for tv/movies like Lost, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park etc
@phor8:
Kualoa Ranch, it's up the North-East coast of Oahu. It's used as a filming location for heaps of shows and movies.I didn't get around to going there when I went there in May so plan on going back some time and will make sure I get up there next time. I want the cliche shot in the area where the Galimimus were chasing people in Jurassic Park so I can photoshop a few in ;D
@Xizor:
I've been told that a recent earthquake or local disaster (landslide?) took a toll on the place.So part of the parking lot and bridge connecting the lot with the park is currently under repair. Might be okay now - but if you're heading out there make sure you double check just in case :)
@Kelberos: You have totally lost me…?
@Xizor:
It's this thing (or related to).http://www.staradvertiser.com/2016/08/06/breaking-news/lands…
Its all good now though (I think…)
@Kelberos: OK yeah not even a hint of it first week of September! That certainly would of thrown a spanner in things.. :D
What is the east coast of Bali like? Thinking of staying at Amed maybe
Less populated the further north you head. Beautiful, peaceful little town. Get a scooter and explore the north and the mountains through the centre 😄
Amed and Tulamben are ok, depends what you're after. A lot less busy than the tourist spots, most people only do day trips out there to dive the Liberty (?) wreck.
Not much going on at night but if you're there to dive or chill than it's nice.
Isn't Fiji an island? And Tasmania?
And Australia?
yeah i went to bali in 2011 and can't say i'd be keen to ever go back there. but its a cheap holiday destination for a quick few days away (especially ex-perth, darwin or adelaide - from the east coast there are probably better options in SE asia).
Why do you keep going back if it's so bad?
I would assume it's not on holiday that they're visiting - otherwise, what a waste of money haha.
"Man this place is shit, maybe the 4th time will be different…"
Indeed. My company forces me to visit for meetings.
Let me guess you stayed in Kuta?
Do some research before you go maybe you will find it is a little different to what you describe ;)
Source : Go yearly
I agree, I stayed well away from kuta and the people were some of the nicest people you can meet.
Head out to Lombok / Gili for something different. I agree anywhere near Kuta is a hole with few redeeming qualities, but everyone has different tastes :)
@Xizor: The south coast of Lombok is by FAR the worst place I've ever been for being hassled by locals - anywhere in the world.
It doesn't matter how friendly the locals are (though most of the genuinely friendly ones will not be able to speak English) - if people are constantly trying to rip me off then it's not a place I can relax in!
I can't say I got much "abuse" though - just "buy this bracelet, buy this bracelet, WHY WON'T YOU BUY THIS BRACELET". Immediately followed by a line of a dozen other children with the exact same bracelets!
And on the topic of friendly locals, people seem to think "the locals" are friendly pretty much anywhere they go in the world. I don't think they're thinking it through too deeply!
@callum9999: Good to know. I have not been, though i have been around Bali. I was meant to go to Lombok and Gili Islands now actually having nabbed those airasia business seats but when they cancelled the route and stuffed us around i just got refund instead of redirect. Was not planning on spending much time south lombok anyway, but based on my time in Bali especially the javanese i can imagine what you're talking about. IMO philippines and even thailand (as long as away from the bigger tourist hubs) the "locals" as you say are generally much more friendly than Bali.
@Xizor: I can't remember being hassled once in the Gili Islands - the worst was the normal "eat at my restaurant!" calls as you're walking down the street.
I really don't think people interact with "locals" enough on holiday to judge how friendly a nation is. Most people I speak to seem to interpret a local being nice while trying to sell you something, or who are employed to look after you, as being "friendly", whereas I wouldn't! There was definitely less hassle in Thailand though (and I want to go back, whereas Bali/Lombok don't appeal at all).
@callum9999:
Supposedly you get hassled more if you're a local tourist in Gili. OTOH Its the other way around in Bali.
You're doing it wrong my friend. Maybe since I've never been to Kuta I have a different experience.. Im currently sitting at the top of Jimbaran Bay trying to decide if I should take that $8 massage or grab a paddle board…
this is where my father lives, I'll be there in Feb, Just booked!
Try getting beyond Kuta and surrounds. Bali is a fantastic place and I've only found the locals to be great people. Going back again in January.
Considering how many tourists go to Bali every year I think the locals are incredibly welcoming and friendly. Fair enough it pretty chaotic in some places but your remarks are way out of line IMHO.
I recommend the Cambodian islands as a good tropical break - not too busy and very laid back.
Which islands?
And tips on how to get there from Phnom Penh?
Theres many and the stopping off point is sihanoukville (the coast). Best way is by bus from phnom penh - its a bit long but cheap. Theres also an airport.
And from the coast you catch a ferry / boat. Very rustic
Thanks.
Any specific island you would recommend to spend a few nights on?
i've never used my QFF points before but i am just curious to see whether anyone has looked into how much points (approx) would be required to go to Honolulu return on this current promotion.
10 years ago I think i spent about 70,000 QFF points to go Syd to Honolulu return
Not sure what it is today though
Interesting that Perth and Adelaide to Bali have gone down ~$20 since the recent deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/268334) and Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane up ~$20.
Jetstar now has more competition from PER and ADL to Bali as Tigerair is now offering low cost fares on those routes. Tigerair is also flying from MEL, however, AirAsia has pulled it's Bali flights to SYD and MEL. Brisbane could do with another airline on the route. I know people who've flown Jetstar from Brisbane to Bali via Cairns and Townsville because it was cheaper.
Thanks for the info.
I was aware of Sydney's loss and ended up booking the last special since I could't envision the old promo prices for a direct flight returning in the absence of competition (at least regularly).
Since $252 to KL return is the best I can get if I'm lucky (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/264346) and I'd still need onward flights and overnight accommodation the last deal for $363 seemed worth it.
Does anyone know if you can book these specials with QFF points and if so how?
I've tried going onto the QFF site but I cant see any Jetstar flightsAfter accumulating around 400,000 QFF points I'm beginning to realise after taxes and all the loop holes QFF points aren't that great…
Use them for domestic flights and upgrades too
yeah but what about jetstar flights (JQ) to bali?
80000 to 90000 gets you first class from Bangkok to London via Dubai on Emirates.
Use them for first class flights…
get a Jetstar gift voucher with your points $1000 for 154800
At the same time you will spend in QFF:
* 169,200 to get $1000 (4 x $250) in Caltex Woolworths giftcards, or
* 175,300 to get $1000 (2 x $500) in Woolworths Wish giftcardsDo you have to use the whole value of the gift voucher in one go?
dont believe so no different to other gift cards
@aussman: Not sure who negged you, but probably because with other Jetstar "vouchers" you will result in forfeiting the remaining amount if not used in 1 hit. Is it a gift voucher or gift card?
Anyone used a rewards point redeemed Jetstar voucher /card?
@tunzafun001:
Valid for Jetstar flights* up to the value of your voucher in one booking
Use your Jetstar flight voucher to book a Jetstar flight available on Jetstar.com or through Jetstar Contact Centre at the time you redeem the voucher
Flights are to be booked within 6 months from the date of issue
The flight voucher must be redeemed in one booking only
The Jetstar flight voucher is not redeemable for cash or other goods and services
Jetstar is not responsible for lost or stolen vouchers
All bookings are subject to the Jetstar Conditions of Carriage
Please consult the flight voucher terms and conditions on receipt of your voucher
Contact Jetstar at Jetstar.com or on 131 538 to book your flight and redeem your gift voucher. At time of redemption you must quote the booking reference number of your voucher@aussman:
Cheers! So definitely only grab a voucher that is exact or under the value you wish to spend. Will still keep it in mind. It is pretty close to AMEX's reward through Webjet with 10000 points for $100 travel. Except Webjet have their ridiculous add on fees making $100 really about 15000 points.
Jetstar only fly selected days make sure pick right days.
It's prob cheaper to book the JQ fare than redeem points. Taxes are usually more than the JQ whole booking in itself.
yeah but i was trying to see if i could even use points as a form of payment and pay taxes but it seems like you can't.. aussman above suggested gift vouchers which seems like the only way but in the end not worth it
Yeah went to Hawaii last year
Points and taxes was about 60,000 and $450 tax. The Jetstar sale fare with baggage was $420 return.
@GearUp: lmaoo thats hilarious.. but can i ask, how did you find that? i can't even seem to do that and can you do it for local flights?
Does an 18th month old baby pay full price? Thanks :)
Under two fly for free. Take thee whole day care
is anyone able to book or search fares to Honolulu in oct? for me it doesn't even go beyond sep.
Went on a Jetstar flight 2 months ago and another one in 1 week's time. Both were rescheduled due to 'operational' reasons a week ahead.
So in my opinion - take that into account when you go with them. Expect them to eff with your schedule and you'll be fine.
Yea I have had the same with most international jetstar flights
That or cancellations. Happens every single time. Notorious for it which is why I've avoid them as much as possible.
On a side note found $400 return from MEL-Phuket which seems quite good for August. However I already have a beach holiday lined up next year so will have to pass despite the tempting price!
Where were you flying to?
I was flying to Jakarta that time, transiting through SG and the PER > SG leg was the one that got rescheduled. The trip next week's rescheduling turned out to be pretty minor - around 10m delay to departure time.
How long was the first one rescheduled for?
@JetBombat:
Can't remember that one. I vaguely remembered it being a bit more severe (almost half a day or so) delay from 10PM to 9AM next day.But what ticked me the most was that they didn't bother adjusting the second leg of the trip. Had I gone along with it without calling them I would've arrived in Singapore a couple of hours past my connecting flight with Jetstar.
I got a 25$ Flight Voucher though….. woo…. /s
Thanks TA, family holiday in June booked! Melb to Bali $468 return each, after all the fees.
As usual the HBA-MEL-SIN-KUL return can be had for $360 return, or $380 with good connection times. Do I book Malaysia again or Honolulu?
I noticed baggage prices have gone up, BUT…To save on baggage, only book baggage for 1 person in your group. Jetstar let you take an unlimited number of bags up to the weight you have purchased. So for example, if you can share 25kg between 2, you will save about $50 over 15kg each. 12.5kg + carry on is heaps for Bali. 30kg is a big jump up from memory (but still cheaper than 2 x 15kg).
Put 1 set of clothing in carry on (in case bags get lost/ delayed).
Also, make sure the person who the bags are booked under is the person who holds a credit card with complimentary travel insurance etc. I normally book flights with one (that requires a flight to activate) and then partner uses another (that requires $450 spend to activate) to book accommodation etc.
Obviously, always use the Jetstar price beat if you can to get no Credit Card fees and 10% off.
Lastly, cups of water are free. Take a meal (wrap etc with you) and you're set.
It's nice to see someone that travels as tight as myself.
With grouped luggage it might get awkward when they ask if you packed the bags yourself - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3O5hSKwnF4 :)
Sadly, from Sydney there's no hope of price matching with AirAsia anymore after its discontinuation of direct flights (and although unlikely to ever compete on price, Garuda and Virgin are probably superior in service anyway).
Guys wtf, Syd - Bali is showing $600+ returns for me for Jan- Mar
Plenty of cheaper options in Feb / Mar
https://www.skyscanner.com.au/transport/flights/syd/dps/cheap-flights-from-sydney-kingsford-smith-to-bali-(denpasar).html?adults=1&children=0&adultsv2=1&childrenv2&infants=0&cabinclass=economy&rtn=1&preferdirects=false&outboundaltsenabled=false&inboundaltsenabled=false&oym=1703&iym=1703&ref=home&selectedoday=01&selectediday=01
Example - 18th to 25th Feb $360
Remember to check Tigers website direct as they don't always appear on sky scanner etc. You may then be able to price match with Jetstar from there.
Nice deal. I took this up last time to Hawaii and trip was last month. Loved it. Pricey place but otherwise really awesome and i'd recommend. Especially if you get a chance to explore the neighbouring islands!
