You can always get cheap to HKG if you add one more destination with Cathay

    • Explain pls

      • +1

Just use their site, to HKG only always more expensive, just add one more destination like Japan, the price will gone down.

        • Won't they keep the luggage until the 2nd stop? And then good luck flying back as I assume the return leg starts form the end city which you never end up visiting.

          • @Spets: You have to stop at HKG first and transit to the 2nd stop and have to leave back here from HKG.

You can stay at HKG for a few days before and after the 2nd stop doesn't matter, in this case you can pick up your luggage first before go on to 2nd stop.

        • I just tested a random date and this didn't hold up. One way Sydney to Hong Kong was $707 on June 5th. One way Sydney to Haneda was $817 on the 5th.

          • @EBC: One way?

Sydney to Haneda transit from HKG, Haneda to HKG and HKG to Sydney?

            • +1

@superforever: I figured one way as otherwise won't they cancel the return journey (Haneda to Sydney via HK) when you don't show up for your flight to Haneda?

Doesn't work for round trip either $1089 to Haneda from Sydney round trip. $917 direct round trip to HK.

              • +1

                @EBC:

when you don't show up for your flight to Haneda?

You can't they will cancel the whole trip.

When you book a trip to Japan, you will have to transit from HKG anyway.

                • @superforever: Then I don't understand your comment about always getting cheap flights to HK if you add one more destination with Cathay.

                  • @EBC:

getting cheap flights to HK if you add one more destination with Cathay.

Sydney to HKG, HKG to Sydney is more expensive than

Sydney to Japan (HKG transit), Japan to Sydney (HKG transit), which you can HKG stay.

                    • @superforever: It isn't though. I edited it in so you may have missed it:

$1089 to Haneda from Sydney round trip (transit HK). $917 direct round trip to HK both on June 5th to 12th.

                      • @EBC: In the type of senario discussed above, your 2nd case for comparison could be direct round trip to Haneda, instead of HK.

          • @EBC: one tickets are never discounted

      • +1

Airlines price their airfares on the route not the distance traveled. Cathay only needs to compete with Qantas for direct flights to HK. Other destinations have a lot more competition.

      • Also you can add a stopover for free in CX.

Just do some search on ITA matrix.

        • Can you please explain how do you do that?

          • @wildstone: Try Multi City

For example, SYD -> HKG -> TYO -> SYD (A Sydney to Tokyo with HK stopover)

Just a great tool, try google for advanced usage

            • @solacens: Sorry for being noob, still don't get it….

With Cathay, you already need to stop over at HK, going from BNE -> HK => PEK. Did you mean there's a way to stopover there for longer period so we can tour HK when going to PEK?

        • To be cleared for Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong stopover is free

    • Why?

    • thanks jv

Brain dead logic, Australian Navy near China which doesnt make the headlines but a few ships cruising around is an issue? :)

      • +11

Typical. It's always been like that in the Anglo media, capture the reaction and frame it as aggressive after initiating the confrontation.
Trump starts trade war. China get asked what they'll do against this trade war by the MSM. They replied we are ready for any war initiated by the US. MSM goes ballistic " look look look! China wants a war!" "bad bad evil warmongers" .

      • -3

A few ships cruising around, doing live fire drills and telling commercial aircraft to get out of the way?

        • +7

          News alert:
Live firing exercises on the high seas are standard training practices permitted under international law.
There is no legal obligation for foreign warships to notify coastal nations over 300 nautical miles away about live firing activities on the high seas.

          Thanks Karen

          • -3

@TightAl: Yes but did the Australian navy fire live ammo and tell commercial aircraft to get out of the way in international waters near China? You were trying to equate the two things by saying "Australian Navy near China which doesnt make the headlines but a few ships cruising around is an issue?"

            Thanks Carole

            • +4

@suti1: wth? reciprocal action doesn't need to be exactly the same action taken in return. what's your logic exactly?

If you want China to mimic the action of the Australian Alliance then China would need to partner with the likes of Indonesia, Malaysia surround Australia with 80 military bases (call it the first island chain) then put out a military strategy of "containment" around Australia and call it the CHINMY military alliance. How you like to be caged and whipped then be labelled aggressive when you twitch?

            • +3

@suti1: Funny place you got your news from, you're telling me the Chinese Army communicated DIRECTLY to a Virgin aircraft to tell them directly to get out of the way?

Regardless of rubbish you said, "There is no legal obligation for foreign warships to notify coastal nations over 300 nautical miles away about live firing activities on the high seas."

Pretty sure the British empire is the one that invaded China but you can keep your revisionist history if you want

  • Can I book a return ticket with a layover in Hong Kong and not continue to China? my destination is Hong Kong

    • +1

      Yes with three provisos:
      - your bags will be checked through to China. So that might be interesting.
      - your remaining legs will be forfeit
      - some airlines get very cranky about people doing this and it could put a black mark on your name for future travel with them.

BUT CHINA IS A COMMUNIST COUNTRY DUR DUR DUR

    • -8

Mainland China is not a friendly country to visit. Unless you know China well. Otherwise you can't even buy a drink - tickets to popular tourist destinations are often only sold in Chinese only APP ….

I just came back from using Laos china railroad and free 240hr visa went to Southern China of Kunming & Chengdu as a 61 year old traveller to see if all the Karens are right?

I bought drinks food stayed in hotels, bought train tickets, subway tickets all with Alipay/ Wechat or cash. Everybody used translate to assist me if i had a question at hotel, train station subway restaurant & bar. Hotels room as good as AU 4 star for $30-$35 a night. Beijing/Shanghai will be closer to $60 plus though.

I got free entry as over 60 to most tourist attractions or 50% off. Not once was I refused entry to a place.

Iam going back in May to visit other areas for 45 days i let you know if they are as nice. Mainstream media spreading BS as usual….

        • +1

Try buying food at a major train station. Can't pay with CC connected to WeChat

      • As a recent visitor, I concur. China was doable back when cash was accepted. Good luck booking a train ticket without a Chinese ID

        • +3

Sounds like you didn't know what you are doing, I went to China as a clueless non chinese speaking tourist and managed everything just fine including booking HSR multiple times.

        • +2

Doesn't sound very recent. You can book a train ticket with Trip.com. Wechat/Alipay have also been revised to accept foreign bank accounts/cards.

        • +3

Getting train ticket easy for none chinese ID holder.
Go to train station and show passport. Long or short trips.

2nd way use trip.com amd pay a small fee. I tried enclose my ticket here.

Your passport is your ticket, you go through manual scan passport vs Chinese ID.
Easy as things have been made alot easier since allowing visa free travel.

          • @TimSubaru: cant go to a train station before arriving in china. tix sold out before even getting to the country

            • @belongsinforums: why do u need to pre booking ur train tickets?
Except big public holidays, you can always get the second train in the next half an hour for big cities.

If you're a Bronco then you might get special permission

      • As far as I know, purchasing ticket to Hongkong a few hours before flight was all right at lease before 1997. I knew a few friends have done that in Singapore Air Port when they were looking for the cheapest price.

  • +1

Better connections similar price on Singapore Airline BNE-PEK (Beijing)or BNE-PVG (Shanghai). 1-2 hr connections vs CP 5-8hours. I booked flying into Beijing and out of Shanghai for $750.
