    so feeling a bit burnt

There's a few Note 7 owners out there with a similar experience.

    • It's almost too easy at this point.

    This deal is on Fire!!!

    • +1

Isn't in the subject line so is fine to post separately.

      • +1

        ok

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 w/ Note 4G 16GB for $439.20 is a bargain.

    • +1

      What is a Note 4G?

      • +1

I think they mean the S-Pen

      • The stylus and 4G connectivity for calling…

  • They went from widescreen tablets to 4:3 and now back to widescreen. Seems they can't make up their mind.

    • What?

      • How?

    • its a trend set by the abundance of 1080p screens for computers, phones, etc, so it has sort of becomes the defacto so you can claim FHD.

      • It's what Samsung were using to begin with until they switched to 4:3 to copy the iPad (1024x768 or 2048x1536 for Tab A and S2 respectively) because it was more 'practical' for browsing. Now it seems they want to go back to widescreen again.

    • +1

4:3 is a stupid ratio. I cant even get it to full screen when I output to HDMI on the Tab S2 (or the ipads for that matter).

      • It's better for browsing. 16:9 is for video. In most use cases 4:3 wins unless you're doing something like outputting to a TV, and not many people would need that.

        • I think 4:3 only wins for text without images such as eBooks.

Most games or movies would are better suited for 16:9 or 16:10. Having different resolutions between the phone and tablet version may affect the playablity of some games (action games)

As for browsing. Since most webpages has images + words. This images are rarely square, but a long rectangle, hence a wider screen is much more suitable to display them + Accompanying text. Then again the extra real-estate is a good place for web developers to plonk an Ad.

Productivity apps would probably favor 4:3.

So if your buying the tablet for business then go for 4:3, otherwise the average home user will truly benefit by a 16:9 ratio

This is from my experience from using Ipad 4, Samsung Tab 10.1" QuadCore, nexus 7, Galaxy TAB A with Spen

        • @imcold: Do you use your widescreen tablet in portrait mode or landscape when browsing the web?

        • @lostn:

Landscape/portrait on my tablet depending on the website. And portrait ONLY my 4.5" phone.

I never use the ipad 4 for browsing because its too heavy.. just use it to use apps that aren't on Android. Like fallout shelter appeared on ios first.

    • Not quite. The Tab S went from widescreen to 4:3 (on the current Tab S2). This is the Tab A.

      • Tab A went to 4:3 also (or rather debuted at 4:3).

But this v2 has gone back to 16:10, doing the exact opposite of what the Tab S2 did.

        http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_tab_a_8_0-7121.php
        http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_tab_a_9_7-7122.php

Since both came out around the same time, and Samsung did not make any more wide screen tablets, it looked like Samsung was ditching 16:10 permanently for 4:3 with identical resolutions and screen sizes to the iPad/iPad Mini (old and new).

        But they've flip flopped.

It doesn't make sense to me that the Tab S series went from 16:10 to 4:3, but the Tab A series went from 4:3 to 16:10. Apple has never switched from 4:3 because they believe it's the best ratio. Samsung should stop changing its mind.

        • Fair enough. It's even more convoluted than I thought!

Still have my LG G Pad 8.3 from a few years back that serves me well. Honestly tablets havent got any better since.

    • what Android OS do these run now pls ?

      • +1

I usually update mine every couple of months to the latest android. I don't believe any more OTA are coming out though.

The G Pad is pretty excellent I have to agree!

        • So you mean the tablet is updated to what marshmallow? Nougat? I've found a site in the us that sells refurbished for $89 US.. tempted

        • @droodle:

I am running marshmellow, a nougat rom is out though - might look at it before my next holiday.

          http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/development

It is a pain in the ass to root, but once done it is easy to flash!

        • My brother has the LG G Pad 10.1
He has only got two updates from when he got the tablet with KitKat: Android Lollipop, and a Security Patch.

        • @grandtheftbat01:

Yeah you guys are all right. I went back to stock lollipop cos that's as far as the G pad went.

But have been using Cyanogenmod 13 up until then. Absolutely correct that its a pain in the arse to get working. Took me all night to unlock bootloader and root and finally get ROM on there.

  • +1

I have got Tab A 8.0 and the tablet has served me well. The battery life has been superb due to low resolution of the display.

  • honestly does this one blow up?

    • -2

      yes, it does.

  • -4

Does it have spen? I thought all Tab A had it standard. However, this one doesn't seem to have it

    • -2

I think the s-pen is only with the much more expensive S series.

      • +1

The A series has them as well, PW posted a link above

      • I think the s-pen is only with the much more expensive S series.

        No, these are the S-Pen versions: P580 (Wi-Fi only); P585 (LTE/Wi-Fi))

        Info here

        • +1

Thanks for confirming that they have no spen. I almost bought it.

  • Does this come with a fire extinguisher?

    • -1

      it's an optional extra accessory.

  • Any users can comment on this as compared to the Nvidia K1 tablet for general (non-gaming) use?

  • -2

Just read "slot for expanding" as "slot for exploding." Sheesh this story is getting to me…

  • Might well as grab the Chuwi Hibook Pro for less than that price. Much better screen + Windows 10

    • would you rate the chuwi hibook then ?

      • +1

Haven't used HiBook Pro as its new. Bought Chuwi Vi10 Plus for mom from gearbest for around $189 with DHL shipping few days before Hibook Pro came out. Its a great tablet for the price. Only issue is Chuwi tablets are bit heavy because of the big battery.

Between HiBook Pro and Galaxy Tab A, I would choose HiBook Pro in a heartbeat as it can be had for around $260 from GearBest with DHL shipping. You get fully laminated 2560x1600 screen (Best screen in a Chinese tablet up to date), 4GB RAM,USB-C,64GB storage with Windows 10 + Android dual boot. What more can you ask for $260 these days?

        • Warranty?

        • @Tiggrrrrr:

1 year provided by Gearbest. Return shipping is paid by paypal but if its too much of a hassle, you can get a fair chunk of purchase price back and get to keep the tablet.

        • @ruchira88: Sounds ok. Cheers!

        • @droodle:

Its AUD268 on the link you provided. Not a bad price but it was AUD250~ at gearbest few days before when they had a flash sale. There might be coupons at Everbuying so look out for them.

    • Higher resolution, but poor quality. To save some manufacturing cost, Chiese tablets usually have a plastic coating or a cheap glass on the touchscreen display which easily gets cracks. Also, Battery life of Chuwi tablets is horrendous. I have Chuwi Vi8 dual boot and I believe the tablet has given me the best performance for money thanks to Intel's Atom processor, but the battery barely lasts 3~4 hours. It is frustrating when you have a tablet that needs to be charged every 3 hours just like a conventional laptop. I believe Hibook Pro would be not much different you would end up lowering the brightness to 25% to achieve some good battery life. While my Galaxy Tab A is no performance king, but it lasts more than one day due to the display resolution and I would take a longer battery over a higher resolution display for this case. And all pre-installed Chinese malware that comes with Chinese mobiles&tablets(except a few exception). Plus, a local warranty.

However, I think it is more fair to compare Chuwi Hibook Pro to Asus Transformer, not Tab A.

      • Vi8 is a really basic tablet and you cant compare it to Chuwi's top of the range HiBook Pro. Battery life is around 6,7 hours according to reviews on Windows. I kind of agree about the Malware part but you can always use Windows side of it.

        • …and lose out on the Android eco system.

  • I bought it - and now… I will dispose of my early Ipad 2 in the "recycling" bin at the Good Guys (JB hiFi???) Brighton

    • sell it on ebay or give it to me for free :)

  • Anyone can compare it with Lenovo one also on sale?
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Lenovo-ZA0X0006AU-Tab-3-A10-P…

  • How does Tab A's screen compare with S2? I know S2's OLED screen is supposed to be superior, but how noticeable is the difference?

    • +1

It would be very noticeable if you were to compare the devices side-by-side, but it seems the Tab A has a decent display for a budget tablet. Tab S2 has a display in a much higher league.

    • +2

S2 has a sharper pixel density, though not as sharp as the older S1 (widescreen) interestingly. It looks much better.

The new Tab A 10.1 has a 224 ppi density, while 9.7" S2 has 264 ppi (same as iPad Air). Tab S2 8.0" is at 320 ppi.

224 ppi is still all right. It's much better than last year's Tab A very low budget 160 ppi and 132 ppi.

But I don't find the Tab A 10.1's $400 normal price to be very budgety. I'd call that mid range.

If you can afford an S2, I'd go for that. The screen is also higher in contrast and colors have more "pop". I would always take OLED over LCD.

  • What's this like compared to iPad 3?
Had my iPad for 4+ years and looking for an upgrade.

    • It's not better. For this kind of money you can buy an iPad Mini 2 which is an upgrade over what you have.

I don't know how the processor compares, but the screen is not better. And most iPad/iPhone owners I speak to would never switch to Android and can never switch because of all their apps being tied to Appstore. You can't bring them over to Android. If you've made a lot of purchases, you're pretty much locked into their ecosystem. For life. Unless you are willing to give up your apps or repurchase them all.

Android users who are savvy make their app purchases with $30 Telstra credit purchased in bulk quantities at $5, so the investment in apps is not that big.
