EVERY Money Transfer Fee Waived - Western Union Australia (Online Only)

160
FIRSTFREEAU

If you need to send money to people overseas, and they need to get it fast, Western Union is a good but expensive option.
Sure you can do an IMT with your bank, but not everyone actually has a bank account, and if they do, it can take 4 business days and the receiving bank may well charge them a hefty fee for receiving the money.

Western Union and Moneygram and the like offer the receiver the ability to receive cash in hand in thousands of locations in their country. It's a lot more convenient in certain circumstances.

I do not recommend Western Union normally because their fees are just too high. Often the Western Union fee for a transfer is more than double the Moneygram fee for the same transfer.

Moneygram self-service kiosks in 7-Eleven stores are generally a far cheaper option. It is a pity Moneygram don't offer an online service like Western Union do in Australia.

Anyway I just came across this little gem of a code:
FIRSTFREEAU

You must not have made an online money transfer with Western Union before to use it.

Visit the Western Union web site in the link, open an account and make EVERY money transfer totally free of the normally excessively high Western Union "transfer fees".

To give you an idea of potential savings, say a 35,000 baht transfer to Thailand would normally incur a fee of about $81 AUD. Using the code on a new account, that fee is zero…

  • LOL $81. Even the bank is only $24. Search Failbook and you can find people who do transfers for $5 (for regular customers).

    • Do they allow the receiver to receive cash in thousands of locations?

I am sure plenty of people offer money transfers on Facebook - not sure I trust them though.

Not sure if you understand the difference between bank transfers and cash pickups?

You can do an IMT at your bank, but the receiver must have a bank account to receive the money into. If they don't have a bank account, an IMT is not an option.

If they do have a bank account, they are very likely to be charged a hefty fee for receiving an IMT. In my experience in countries like China that fee can be as high as $50 USD on a $1000 USD IMT.

I understand or I wouldn't have said anything.

Mrs has been doing it for years with no issues. And if you're talking about Thailand, everyone has a bank account.

        • According to this, https://www.bot.or.th/English/FinancialInstitutions/Highligh…, about 12% of Thai's don't have a bank account.

That proportion is much higher in rural and poor areas.

Also if you are doing an IMT, it might take up to 4 working days to get the money into the account and there will be a hefty charge from the receivers bank for receiving it.

Some of the Facebook and corner store style money transfers avoid that by having a local in Thailand make the deposits from Thailand….

@GreatWhiteHunter: WU also does exactly what you describe in countries where it offers its Direct To Bank option (in the sense that the deposits are made within the receiving country with no charge from the receivers bank), and the fee is $10 or less depending on the transaction. It's had the option for a few years now to compete with similar services.

Cash Pickup fees are so terrible because its essentially a duopoly between WU/Moneygram for businesses that have a large range of cash pickup locations in most countries. Albeit they have both dropped fees substansially in the last couple years for transfers to a few countries (Vietnam ($7 fee for a 1000 AUD transfer compared to $70 for most countries), Philippines, India, Pakistan) so competition from alternative money transfer businesses must be starting to hurt.

        • everyone…? i think your mistaking your opinion for fact.

I find Transferwise to be the best option

    • Transferwise is good for sending bank to bank. Not an option when the receiver doesn't have a bank account.

Don't you dare … Me! She told me she's living a hard life and needed money to buy a motorbike so she can find a job. She also told me that it's a good time to invest in Thailand property. She will manage the property for me.

      Please be aware of this

  • I use WorldRemit via pc or the app. Instant transfers and pickup locations galore. 9 times out of 10 I find it the easiest. The fees for sending large sums is one of the cheapest for sure, $10,000 for $7 dollars or less.

I use World Remit also to send money to the Philippines. The receiver can pickup in multiple agents such as Palawan pawnshop, Mlhullier, Metrobank, etc. Is anyone aware of a cheaper way to send money than via this broker? Also the number of agents is large. Could possibly even be higher than the number of WU and MoneyGram agents in PI.
