Qantas Premier Statement Instalment Plan: 10,000 QFF Points after 3M, Min. $2500 over 12M, ≥8.99% p.a. Interest @ Qantas Money

750

TLDR: ~$0.60 for 20,000 QFF Points
UPDATE: It seems the interest rate offer is different for different people. The only change this will have is the month ‘0’ interest repayment will be slightly higher, and the succeeding months repayments will be slightly higher.

First glance seems like a terrible deal but read below, reviewed the T&C’s thoroughly and confirmed with Qantas Money operator.

“Earn 10,000 Qantas Points when you set up a Statement Instalment Plan of $2,500 or more and make your first three consecutive payments on time. Offer is limited to one Statement Instalment Plan set up per month until 31 March 2025. Additional criteria applies, see terms and conditions.”

T&C’s state “You can also make additional repayments, or choose to pay off the instalment plan at any time, at no extra charge.”, I have just set up an instalment plan yesterday for the minimum required amount of $2500. For month ‘0’ there is an interest only repayment of $16.01 (reduced to $0.06 when the instalment plan balance is $10) for $2500 over a 12 month plan, which is the lowest for each instalment period. You are able to make additional instalment plan repayments as soon as the plan is set up, with no limit on how much the additional repayment is.

Any questions I’ll try to answer, have spent almost an hour in total talking to operators to confirm all information, so can likely help you out!

Within month ‘0’ transfer an amount you seem appropriate to lower the repayments for the following repayment periods. Confirmed with operator that succeeding months instalments will be reduced automatically based on Instalment Plan balance. I have transferred $2490 as an additional repayment to lower balance, which results in an interest repayment of approx. $0.89 over remaining 12 months.

After the third month instalment plan payment has been made, repay the remaining balance.
Thus approx. $0.30 for 10,000 QFF points. This can be repeated in the month of March in the same manner. Total of 20,000 QFF for $0.60.

Extra repayments can be done via the same payment method used for paying your statement balance, existing statement balance takes priority, however if you only wish to pay the instalment plan balance, make the payment, and call Qantas Money to change the full amount to the instalment plan.

Have a + for doing the math

Does this deal go in the ‘very clever, but who will actually go through the trouble’ bucket?

    • If you already have a card with Virgin and just need a few extra clicks then it's not too bad.

For almost everyone else, the credit check alone negates the small amount of points.

    • Actually not very difficult to do, only time consuming for myself to confirm all details. Set up plan through the app, then transfer funds to instalment plan. Practically all there is to it.

      • How much time investment? (Including reading everything that needs to be read to do it).

    • But too much work for 20k points

      Citibank had like 50k

      • +2

Sign up process via app is very quick. Approx. 5-10 minutes absolute max. Check back next day and check whether the instalment plan shows, if it does make the extra payment.
The following monthly payments are added on top of your monthly statements. So no extra time consumed there.

My write up for this post is long, but only as I’ve tried to cover every scenario people might come across, so it isn’t a great representation of the process. My reply comments to others should also cover anything that’s missed. Qantas T&C’s aren’t written with this deal as the priority so may initially come across as confusing.
I’ll try to update tomorrow with a simple step by step process for people to follow.

    • No note of minimum monthly repayments in their T&C’s, confirmed this with operator many times also. I could tell they knew what I was planning to do, but didn’t mention anything against it.

    • I had the same idea and have been trying this since Dec. But yes a large refund actually screwed one of the plans.

      Haven't received the points yet.

  • i think mine is 9.99%, wtf

  • Why 12 months?

Doesn't seem to be anything in the T&Cs that describe it as having to be 12

    • 12 months is the minimum selectable instalment plan duration, up to 60 months, however can be paid off early at any time.

    • +2

you need to do 3 months to get the 10k qantas points. so what you do is $2500 for 12 months. then next day pay like 2490 to leave a $10 balance. wait until the 10k points hits your account, then pay off the entire balance.

i guess you can even do $2499.99 if you want, but they gave me grief on why i don't just pay the whole thing. its just $0.01 more.

      • So you just pay to the credit card by bpay, or have to call the operate and saying that you want to pay $2490 for the installment plan?

        • +1

If your account balance is already $0, than all funds transferred go directly to the instalment plan. If you have a balance, then that takes priority for the extra repayment. E.g. Balance of $100. If you transfer $2490 through BPAY, $100 of that will go to pay off your card balance, and the remaining $2390 will go to the Instalment Plan. However, if you want the total transfer to go to the instalment plan, transfer the $2490, and contact Qantas Money to direct the full amount to the instalment plant. You could also just transfer $2590, which would pay off the $100 in the account and $2490 from the instalment plan. Leaving a balance of $10 in the instalment plan.

  • Mine is 14.99% p.a, pass!!

    • Have noticed the IR is different is different for different people, regardless of IR there won’t be very much difference with the exception of the month ‘0’ payment, couldn’t imagine this being more than a few extra dollars without doing the math.

      • Wait, did I miss something, could you please explaine to me again like I am 5? So I just setup $2500 plan and I have to pay $225 per month for 12 months, what do i have to do? Just pay $16 interest only manually?

        • +1

Refer to @Hugh G Rection comment, practically sums it up.

  • Wouldn’t the cost be $8 not $28 as $20 is the principal balance owing.

    • +1

The $13.00 is an interest only payment, if you access to the deal in the app, you can view what the repayments will be. States an interest only payment, no principal, for month ‘0’.

  • Does this only work with a Qantas issues credit card? I.e. can I do this with ANZ Qantas frequent flyer?

    • mine showed up as an option in the app, so I'm guessing it probably won't be available for ANZ.

  • I have a Qantas AMEX card. Does this mean anything for me?

I want a visa or mastercard credit card do would this be applicable? I'm lost.

    • +2

Alvian made the title even more confusing. This deal seems to relate specifically to holders of the Qantas Premier Platinum credit card.

      • Didn’t realise the title had been updated, I can try to revert it back to what it use to say if read clearer?

    • The deal showed in my Qants Money account, I’ve never had an AMEX account but assume it doesn’t use the Qantas Money app? If it does check in your account for the offer.

  • Have a + for the deal. Won't be partaking as don't wanna give Q any more of my money if I don't need to

    • Me either. But at 0.14cpp, I'd be a buyer since I don't believe even Qantas would value their points internally this low.

  • yeah.. nahh

  • +2

This is one of the most confusing poorly worded titles and posts I have ever seen. No mention of what it is exactly. Just a TLDR and an update?

What exactly is this product? A loan or a term deposit? Why is paying a minimum of $2,500 of over 12 months for 20,000 points a deal?

  • -1

My app says I am eligible for an instalment plan, but nothing mentioned about QF points.

Doesn't surprise me as NAB hates my guts after I fought them tooth and nail to get this card. They won't be doing me any favours. It doesn't help that I pay the balance in full every month as soon as I get the statement just to make sure it never goes overdue. But I also don't spend much on the card, it is just the alternative card I use if I strike a merchant who won't take Amex and I cannot use Sniip to pay it with Amex.

  • Is qantas credit card backed by CITI?

    • Yes Citi, whos card division is now owned by NAB in Australia.

      • no luck with citi for me in the past experience:(

  • +2

Excellent deal, thanks for posting. I did the Citibank personal loan one last year for 70,000 points and $199 fee, and paid down 95% of the drawn down amount on day one. Similar principal here. If only qantas premier had more than only 50,000 sign on bonus qantas points, then I would have their card and do this.

  • Called them, and the lady immediately said, “For your expectation, you won’t receive 10K Qantas points if you do this.”

I just 🤣😆, then said, “Yes, okay, go ahead and apply $2,490 to my instalment plan, thank you.”

I took screenshots of everything, and if I don’t receive the points, I’ll file a formal complaint.

    • Your minimum payment will wipe out that remaining $10. Not paying that means your account isn't in good standing. Either way, you're not getting the 10k.

Your logic was right though - pay off a decent chunk of it immediately, say $2k, suck up the interest on the $500 (even the interest on the full amount, 10k QF points is worth more, if you pay it off at the end of the three months).

      • Minimum repayment is automatically reduced based on account balance. I have $10 in the statement plan remaining, and the repayment schedule has been adjusted. It shows Instalment repayments of $0.80 principal and $0.07 for the interest for each month.

        • Oh fair enough, should be ok then - some things like CCs have a minimum of a %, fees interest plus %, or a minimum $ figure, it was the latter I was worried about!

  • Another update, just received my monthly statement. Much to my surprise, month ‘0’ repayment was reduced from $16.01 to $0.06.
Have also set up a second instalment plan. So total will be less than $1 for 20,000 QFF points.
