Print Your Own Passport Photos for 10 Cents

331

Hi, just printed my own passport photo for 10 cents. Go to http://www.epassportphoto.com/ and follow the easy instructions. You must leave a bit of space around the person's head when taking the photo, otherwise the head will not be within the correct size limits after the photo is printed, ie don't frame the photo too tight. You upload a photo and receive a jpg, which you can then print in a 4 inch by 6 inch size. Officeworks are currently 10 cents per photo. There are 7 passport photos per print. You can get better results without flash.

Australian passport photo specs are extremely strict. Passport applications will be rejected if your photo does not comply (I know from 1st hand experience). This includes any shadows (on the face and behind, and the exact size of the face on the photo from top to bottom.
    be careful

    • Very true, I highly recommend to get your passport done by professionals. You don't wanna go stingy on 10 or so bucks for an application worth $200+.

      • I agree. If you can afford to travel you can afford $10.
I'm sure it isn't going to break the bank.

    • from personal experience i've found that many AusPost employees will just reject the photo if you haven't had it taken with them.

      • That sounds like abuse of the AusPost franchise. Did you let them get away with it?

        • nope, i just go elsewhere. Makes me angry though

And i know it's not the photo. I take it to paxtons (shameless plug) who use computer software to print it the perfect height.

      • I guess it varies from each postoffice. At my local they were quite good, I went in with some pics we printed at home on normal glossy photo paper. After telling me that the passport guys wouldn't accept the photos, I asked about getting some new ones taken and printed there, and he was actually the one that suggested I take my files to the local Big W as it would be only a fraction of the cost.

isnt really a freebie if its 10 cents…should take of

    • +1

      10cents? It's close enough, already.
Is that some kind of irony because of your name?
Even in Caulfield, we'd let that one through to the keeper.
Well, we would if we played cricket, but you get the idea…

        just saying…even @kelsey2112 agreed~

    • Anal.

  • its not a freebie if you have to pay for it…

I have used this before for my Aussie passport. Bargain compared to what they charge at Aust Post.

  • +2

Costco, I know only good for Melbourne atm, only charges $4.99 for 8 photos which they take. I agree that the passport specs are too strict to chance messing around for $5.

I've taken my own passport photos for both myself and the missus, its not that big a deal so long as you stick to the specs as per provided by greenpossum. (and despite the time we took to get a decent looking pic, the passport people still manage to make them look terrible in our passort..)

However, we went to Big W and got a 6x4 printed, which from memory can fit 8 photos on it, for 10c. Just had our headshots as seperate files and used the kiosk to add multiples to the 6x4. I think the hardest part about it was finding where the right type of print was on the kiosk, it was listed under scrapbooking or some other non-obvious category.

King Tightarse etc the software is free and is extremely easy to use and very accurate. I don't think you can muck it up, as long as you don't take a very tight shot.

You can print it out at home if you want.

You can open the jpg to 4"x6" on screen and measure the face to see if it's in the range of 32-36 mm to confirm that it conforms.

    • Sounds good to me.

    • If you print it at home, make sure its on good thick card stock, I have been knocked back for a print on normal photo paper (the thinner stuff)

  • When I got shot I thought there was a requirement that you must have it taken at the post office. This is a bargain if you have the patience and have someone around to shoot you

FYI I paid $15 for the pleasure

Hope this website isn't run by Mossad ;-)

HOW CAN IT BE FREE IF I HAVE TO PAY 10c?

Mod: Removed negative vote after freebie tag removed. voting guidelines

*Negatives left to ask for corrections to a post are also helpful (eg a condition left out of the title) but may be removed after the corrections have been made. *

    Vote Revoked

    • Where does it say it is free in the post?
      and negging on 10c, cmon

      • It is tagged (incorrectly) as a freebie.
Agreed though that a neg is a bit harsh — unless it was just to get the OP's attention

    • The software is free.
      You resent 10c for a print…sheesh?
      Tight, bordering on spoilt.

      • You could donate your username to said person.
On a related note what happened to 'Mr Tightarse' with the Simpson avatar?

        • Ah yes but my username includes subtle irony.
That imposter? He is still here Lol/

  • There is a program available for USD10 if anyone worried about privacy. But you should know the photo sizes required. This program saved me and my friends few hundred dollars.I ended up being the passport photographer.

i use this website all the time,

been using it for the past 8 yrs.

just use it to create your photo and take it to harvynorman to print.

  • I use a Photoshop template like this one
    http://www.nicmyers.com/photoshop-passport-template-v1/
had to modify it for Oz.
quite easy to use if you know photoshop.

The post office rep looked at it suspiciously then got a ruler and carefully measured it, but could not find any issues and accepted the app and I got my passport in a couple of weeks.

  • I used this website and made my own pics. I have to add that my friend at work used his 3K SLR or whatever it is called and we took a few shots.

I used my canon pixma 640 "200 AUD from HN :)" and the pics were perfect. I had to add a little bit og light "personal preference".

My only con about this website is that it does not keep the original pic's size. it converts it to a lower quality after you download the end product.

Ah and before I finish, THIS IS a freebie. You dont actually pay the website for this and it is totally free. The added 10c that the OP mentionned is just what you pay for printing this. it can be free really if you use something like snapfish free 50 prints that comes up from time to time.

  • I think this is great if you are going to take IELTS test. They require the same specs with Australian Passport.

  • I just use Power Point. If I'm concerned about size, I just make a 60x40cm canvas (or change the DPI settings) and put a number of different sizes in the picture. Save as jpg (over 100Kb), take it to BigW for 10c. Been doing this for years, including birthday party invites etc.

    • are u referring to photo shop or power point?

  • +2

Do u guys factor in time wasted if something a bargain or not? Like really for 5-10$ i could not be bothered trying to set up somewhere in my house to take the photo, taking multiple shots to make sure they are right, either editing myself or using that site, THEN still having to go out of my way somewhere to print them. Then hopefully they dont get rejected.

In sydney there is a chemist 20m away from the passport office. Took 45sec to do and cost $10 if it were rejected for any reason i could have just walked downstairs and got it redone with my reciept. I value an hour or more of my time more than $10

    • +2

That's subjective and up to you to decide, just like all the deals here. Somebody might say such and such a product isn't useful to me. But if it's useful to someone else and is a deal, then it a valid post. Or perhaps some people have more time than money. Or some people just like beating the system for the fun of it. All you can do is have your say, which you just did.

  • -1

This might be a deal for printing photo's but for it sure isn't a deal for passport photo's. The requirements are quiet tough and I remember having a nightmare when my dad (who's cheap) decided to use those shitty booths who advertise "passport ready" photo's. When we took them to get our passports they refused to use them and pointed out several reasons why they were not up to the standards. We got sent down to the nearest australia post office to get new pictures.

Crap deal for the above reason.

    • very funny. Do you know web 2.0? do you know how web apps are made these days? go and check it yourself. you are comparing oranges with apples.

  • +1

with photo booth, you don't get to adjust your picture.

but with this, you can take as many pictures as you want, and take the one that fits the standard.

a lot of people out there work for $10 an hour in a restaurant~

  • +2

To narsayers, you can go to any post office and ask them to check the photos. If there are a few people travelling this works out very cheaply, especially if you print at home. The whole thing can be done in a couple of minutes. To get best results, spot focus on the face by pushing shutter realease half-way, reframe leaving room at top of the photo and print out on 4"x6" paper. The next time is even easier and you can impress all your friends by doing theirs.

  • +1

I used this all the time and did as many as 15-20 passport photos of my friends and relatives.
