I've been waiting for this to go on sale and now Lenovo has this on special for $999, $300 off down from $1299.

Thinkpad 13 is a newer model and never been on sale before, apart from using the 10% off welcome coupon code but that's not cashrewards-friendly. This is a very good budget Thinkpad, with the best keyboard even better than their T and X series.

Note that the M.2 slot only accepts SATA SSD. There are 2 DIMM slots so you can easily buy another 8GB stick to make it 16GB dual channel.

  • Great deal and better than the one I jumped on a few weeks ago which btw, had Cash Rewards declined despite the code being on the site. I have submitted a query and am awaiting response.

    • +2

That's a lot of money if you don't get it

      • Yes, $87 or so. Every smaller query I have put in previously has quickly been credited to my account but not this one. I'll give them until the end of the week but not sure where to go from there.

        • +1

If you have a click to the store in your click history (matching time of purchase), a valid invoice, and used a coupon on the CR website, you will be paid 100%, as long as the laptop hasn't been returned (which is why there is a pending period before Lenovo releases the funds).

        • @tightarse: click history? Is that something in Chrome?

        • @HONDA4LIFE: No. it's a feature available to everyone by going into My Account…

        • @tightarse: Ahhh, ok. I think there should be some other way to cross verify that you've clicked on their referrer link. I guess you would have to take a video of yourself clicking on it perhaps for bigger purchases..

        • @HONDA4LIFE: No need. If you're logged in to CR and click 'Go to Store' for any of our merchants, this will record the click along with date & time stamp. It also allows you to submit an enquiry against any transaction older than 7 days that may not have tracked directly from this page. Give it a go, you'll see it works every time :)

        • +1

@tightarse: Cool, didnt know it tracked referral clicks without actual purchases. Good to know, thanks.

    • +8

Cash rewards has never worked for me on large purchases for some reason. I even emailed them once and they basically told me too bad.

      • +1

I emailed them before purchasing and they confirmed that it will be honoured. This was for a lenovo deal last week with a cash back of around $100. I will literally have to return the product if they refuse to pay.

      • -1

Cashrewards is known to do that. Smaller purchases get tracked, but the bigger purchases conveniently go "missing".

        • +3

Orpheus, your repeated trash talk against CR is really becoming boring and long-winded. In case you've forgotten, allow me to remind you of this. Conveniently, I'm yet to hear from you.

        • -7

@tightarse: You know what's funny, I actually gave Cashrewards another shot awhile after your response. Several small eBay items were tracked (batteries, adapters, glass protectors etc), but when I bought a camera and lens for $600, it magically didnt track. And again when I bought something else for $800. Same browser and computer. Frustrating. I've given up lol. I'm also not the only one this has happened to, so constantly pretending this is a one off and this issue doesn't exist at all is whats really becoming boring and long-winded.

tl;dr: Cashrewards + expensive items = bad mix and should never be pre calculated into a bargain

        • +4

@Orpheus: Again I give you the opportunity to provide your CR email address, and a copy of your invoices. This allows me to check if indeed you did click through to the stores in question, irrespective of tracking, which by the way you can confirm yourself in your click history (in my account). If there are clicks on your purchase dates & times, you then have a case. If not, your argument is invalid. It's really a no brainer - if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

        • +6

          @Orpheus:
Every eBay purchase via CR has always gone through fine for me, I think it's the smaller stores that may have some issues (which are correctable by submitting a support ticket + invoice).

So far for me: Every eBay and Sony purchase has gone through, cashback approved.
Dan Murphy's tracked (a bit delayed but within the specified time frame), awaiting approval
Easy flowers needed following up but went through, cashback approved.
Haven't tried on Lenovo yet so can't comment on that.

Instead of circlejerking maybe make a thread on it with an attempt of resolution rather than expecting everything to go smoothly on a silver platter for you?
This is turning into whingepool forums.

so constantly pretending this is a one off and this issue doesn't exist at all is whats really becoming boring and long-winded.

I don't think TA is pretending this is a one off or there wouldn't be a support ticket process (been there from at least April) to submit your invoice.
I try to do a bit of homework before I go click into the Cash rewards link, for eBay I save things into my watch list, then close the browser, open cash rewards, go to the eBay page, click through, go to watch list and add stuff I want to buy, then pay then and there.
          Pebkac?
If not, then support ticket + invoice. If you never try, you will never get your cashback. But if you try, your chances increase drastically from 0%!!

        • +5

@Orpheus: I have made two purchases both well over $1000. They were both tracked. CR may not be perfect but you shouldn't whine about issues if you are not willing to get them to look into it.

        • +2

My purchases do get tracked and if for some reason it gets missed then I have found that the CR team is very helpful.

        • +1

I purchased a $1300 fridge from good guys ebay and forgot to go thru CR. It still tracked and have the money in my account.

        • +2

@Orpheus: You should read your own posts. It isn't CR that is "boring and long-winded".

I made four purchases from Lenovo in the past 3 months for $3,306, $2,925, $8,599, and $6,699. They got tracked the same day.

Are you running any ad blockers or privacy blockers?

If you're not willing to get them to look into it, you should stop whining.

        • @eug:
          What a baller!

        • @cwongtech: They weren't all for me. :)

    Intel 8260 has bluetooth 4.2

  • Holy crap this the same size/weight as MacBook Air

  • So are these ThinkPad 13's a replacement for the T series? Ever since they introduced a range of different types of ThinkPads, I've been so confused. In the meantime, I'm sticking with my X1 Carbon.

    • +1

No they're not. This is a entry level ultrabook, designed to compete against Macbook Airs.

They don't have the same magnesium alloy chassis found in the T / X series, but it still meets MIL-SPEC 810G durability tests.

Hinges also turn 180 degress, which is a major plus.

  • +3

I ended up going for the T460s, but I really really wanted the 13. It's size and specs were perfect for me. The only deal breaker was the lack of a back lit keyboard and the absence of an ethernet port. If it ticked those boxes as well, I would have snapped it up when it released.

  • Anyone tried price matching with HP? What is the equivilant HP machine they would give for this. It could combine nicely with the amex $100 off $500 offer.

    • Hp Elitebook Folio series would be the closest equivalent, but they are pretty expensive. I have the 940m (indistinguishable from the Elitebook Folio 1040 G1) and it's a very nice machine, but there are two things I really dislike about it:

      1. the screen is 1600 * 900 (good) TN panel (bad), because of very narrow viewing angles.
      2. the Forcepad is ridiculously hard to get used to. It doesn't have a tactile micro-switch — it's a solid state touchpad that can sense pressure.

Anyway I'd take this Thinkpad 13 over my HP anyday.

  • Touchscreen?

  • whoops my bad for some reason I thought it was a laptop not a think pad.

  • +2

No backlit keyboard is a bummer :(

      deal breaker for me

Wife is interested but wants to try it out in flesh. Does anyone know if it's on display anywhere in Melb?

    • I'd like to know this too!

  • Intel 7th gen CPU's are imminent, they promise rather good performance gains for the U series, I would wait for them personally.

    • Thinkpad Kaby Lake won't be announced until Jan at least, they usually launch some models on CES. And maybe Thinkpad 13 would be even later since this year it was only available around May/June.

      • +2

Nope Kaby lake will be out eminently, and the reason Skylake took longer to appear in some models is because it needed a new cpu socket, thus a redesign of mobo was needed, while Kaby Lake uses the same socket as Skylake, and is a drop in replacement, so as soon as people get their hands on Kaby Lake cpu's they will appear in laptops, there won't be any delay.

      • +2

Dell is already shipping inspiron laptops with intel 7th gen CPUs (available to buy on their website along side the clearance sales for the 6th gen versions).

I dont see why lenovo would take 8 months longer than a major competitor.

        • Inspiron = consumer model. Lenovo is also about to ship Ideapad Kaby Lake soon. But Thinkpad is their business model, I don't think Dell would have their Latitude Kaby Lake available soon.

        • @tukanglistrik: But Thinkpad is their business model

Yeah…. its been a while since thinkpad was a business-only device. OPs link advertises the thinkpad as "for professionals, students, and educators alike". Also no laptop with an 'Education edition' is a real business laptop.

Theyre just milking the brand name for all its worth.

    • The TP13 was only released around May.

Another 10-12 mths is my guess for Kaby Lake on the TP13.

  • -2

    mantap kang listrik.. good deal

    • Yes, very mantap.

      • Berarti mantap sekali.

        • tarik mangg..

  • I just chatted to one of their agents and was offered a slightly cheaper price. Is it safe to buy it online through their agent by giving our credit card detail?

    • +2

you will miss out on cashrewards..

  • Lenovo is ruining Thinkpad

  • Will CashRewards honour this? The coupon that is on their site is not the same one in the listing.

"If you use a coupon code that is not listed on this site, rewards may not be payable."

  • Note that some Lenovo laptops in the past have used pulse width modulation (PWM) to dim the display. Although some people won't notice it, it can cause eye strain.

Personally I would want to make sure that this Lenovo doesn't use PWM before purchasing. Generally from what I have read, DELL and HP laptops don't have this problem.

Here is some more info for those interested:

    PWM not detected on T460 :-) http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T460-Core-i5-FH…

    but was on the 460s: :-( http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T460s-Core-i7-W…

    • It's not, read the notebookcheck review I posted above.

Thanks for that. Good on Lenovo… they might be improving :-)

  • Here is my thoughts on the TP13 …
    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2534662

I changed to 16Gb DDR RAM

And changed to a Samsung 850 EVO

Bought 14 May and still waiting for $113 to clear from CashRewards!!

    • Thought that you can't fit an NVMe SSD due to different pin?

Edit: Ok nvm, comment changed to 850 Evo.

      • Sorry .. edited.

I tried the M2 950 Pro NVMe first and I don't think it worked, so I stuck the M2 950 Pro in my desktop and bought the M2 850 Evo SATA for the TP13.

So the 950 Pro NVMe does physically fit, but doesn't work as a disk.

  • get paid on friday - will it be for sale?

    • Guess it will be until Friday 9pm

      Get a cc

  • Is it any good? Never bought a Lenovo product but feeling like grabbing one of those!

    • +1

I've had mine since May and think it is pretty good for the price.
Keyboard is great … best in class.
      Performance is great.
Screen is perfect at 1080p on a 13".
Weight is ok at 1.4kg .. not superlight but nothing huge to complain about.
Great size for travelling yet still being productive for serious work.
      Full size keyboard.
Anyway … read the proper reviews.

      • Thanks for your detailed review. I dont trust the reviews done by ''tech gurus".
Looks a tempting offer to just pass!

        • +1

I'm not sure this is a fantastic deal.

I bought mine in the week they were released and just find a generic Lenovo coupon for about an 8% or 10% discount, then used CashRewards for about 8%, then travelled overseas and did the TRS refund for 10% GST, so the TP13 cost about $800.

Just buy the 4Gb model also, and dump the 4Gb and replace with 16Gb. Also dump the M2 SSD and replace with an 850 EVO M2 SSD.

  • Definitely interested in replacing my old Zenbook, would I be able to edit videos on this device? Would Intel gfx be sufficient?

    • What were the specs of your old Zenbook and was it sufficient for what you're doing?

Sufficient is a bit subjective with video editing- what files were you playing with- e.g. size, format, length…).

If you're not too worried about battery life, something based around an i5 6300HQ/i7 6700HQ would definitely be ideal, as they have 4 physical cores. Something like this with a 6700HQ and dedicated graphics would be worth the extra if you're doing a fair bit of video work.

would 14 days return policy work on this laptop?

  • can anyone give some advice on the thinkpad x1 yoga (with oled)? its $800 off. thanks

    • Oled is obviously nice, but not really worth it (IMO) at a $600 price premium, especially in a laptop. The contrast of the IPS display is already pretty good, as is the colour accuracy and viewing angles. Unless you're doing a lot of work at night/in a dark room, where you'll notice the difference.

Potentially lower 'life cycle' in the OLED model, as current gen screens still suffer from burn-in in the long term, but that's arguable.

  • for a noob like myself, what's the way to purchase this laptop with all the benefits? Just proceed by clicking the deal and claim for cashback? On the website, it says $899, not 999? can deal coupons be used at the same time?

    • +1

      1) Click view or customise
      2) Select second column with ThinkPad 13 - i5 FHD + 8GB memory.($899 is i3 processor).
      3) add to card

Although you can start from cashrewards to recieve 8% back.

      • Thanks. So i reckon the best coupon deal i can get is 5% off with 8% cashback, right? If an item I am buying is between 800-1499, you can get 5%.

        • Nope, use coupon code DEALS on the "Thinkpad 13 - i5 FHD + 8GB memory" model. It will bring the price down to $999 from $1299, about 23% off. Then you'll get further 8% cashback if you start from cashrewards.

        • @tukanglistrik: Thanks for the info. I thought with the deal down to 999, further 5% is possible by the coupon but i guess i was wrong. For the cashrewards, am i meant to claim it first and then proceed? I've never done this before..

        • +1

@yoounga: You can only use one coupon per transaction. Since DEALS is already used, you can't stack with LENOVO5.

Start from cashrewards, select Lenovo, click "Go to Store". It will redirect you to Lenovo website. Buy your laptop from this tab only, don't open another tab. When done, you should get a tracking confirmation from cashrewards. Then you'll get paid after about 3 months, provided you don't return/cancel the laptop.

        • @tukanglistrik: Thanks for the details:)

        • @tukanglistrik: Far out… I've done with my payment through the tab from the cashwards but it did not show anything like a tracking confirmation from cashwards… Is there anything I can still do about it?

        • @yoounga:Ooh.. I think it was just that i wasn't logged in that very last time when i ordered it by mistake… can i possibly order another one through cashrewards and cancel the previous one by call on Monday?

        • @tukanglistrik: I ended up making two orders but still didn't see any kind a confirmation for cashrewards…

        • @yoounga: read TA's comment above if you can see your click history. Tracking usually come within 1 hour for me.

        • @tukanglistrik: Yes. I checked my history just now and confirmed that i got the cashrewards for two orders.. so stupid! I hope I can cancel one on Monday… Thanks anyhow!

  • Whoa this is an awesome price! But I think I will some GPU to work on some Unity projects. Is there any other small laptops I should look out for?
