    • Hey knowwhat, how do you know they're participating in the offer? I searched the map around Brisbane cbd and George St news didn't come up

      • +1

I tried different searches, including the 'George' 'newsagency' etc in the search and then it came up, I think on the 8th page.

  • AnY newsagent around world square taking opal this time?

  • Any place in Parramatta asside from 119a Macquarie Street?

I noticed these places from last time:

    Ezymart Church Street
    253 Church Street NSW Convenience
    Ezymart 18 Smith Street

    • Are they on Amex stores list though?

      • not this time, hence i'm curious to know too

Confirmed CONVENIENCE AT THE COVE $1 surcharge 114 LONGUEVILLE ROAD , LANE COVE NEW SOUTH WALES 2066 Tel: 02 9420 0888

  • oh no
forgot i had to enrol for this

    dammit too late :(

  • I spent at a Pharmacy 4 Less store and hasn't received email for $10 credit yet. What could be the reason?

    • My Amex issued card all got email. Bank issued one (ANZ) didn't.

      • Same here, even though offer is saved to card yet no emails received.

      • Similar here; my ANZ issued one only got 1 of the 3 emails and the other Amex got them all

        • Ok good to know. I'll keep using ANZ and hope emails or refunds come thru

        • @TrailerTrash:
I sent a message to them and they replied yesterday, confirming my transactions had gone through etc

    • Called up Amex regarding this and they told not to worry abt email as it depends on the system the store uses and the frequency at which they send transactions to Amex. Should be all good hopefully.

  • +5

Holy god is there any better feeling than the sound of that email notification coming in at the checkout

Wu's Pharmacy have "reached daily limit" for today.
I think I found B&J Newsagency (Haymarket, near Market City) but if I've got the right store it's closed on weekends.

Couldn't physically find Darling Park Newsagency that has been mentioned a couple of times here.. I have a feeling it's only open weekdays though because I believe it's linked to a corporate building (PWC).

There's a City Convenience store not far from there that has a Shop Small label and does Opal Top up, but they claim to take cash only for opal card top ups.

    • Oh that sucks. I was hoping to go to these shops on sunday

    • +1

Yes, Darling park is open only on weekdays.
      Entrance is via sussex st.
Its in ground floor of CBA/PWC/Rabobank buildings

  • i didn't get any email in registering and purchase. I tried to re-register and said has been registered. Finger cross it works.

    • I used to have 2 amex cards, one would send an email and the other wouldn't so just check your statements in a couple days and make sure they went through:)

Went for brunch at a place, then went to pay the bill - inserted the amex and smashed in the PIN. The girl says "Oh, no AMEX" just as "approved" came up, and my phone pinged with a confirmation email.

    • +1

Nothing better then tapping your card and seeing approved as they lament "we dont take amex"..

      • +2

Yep! Gotta be quick or discrete - just tap and if they really don't take AMEX, the machine itself will tell you!

    • +2

Haha, I insert mine and cover up the AMEX logo with my thumb and it's a race to quickly get the transaction over and done with before they can say anything lol

      • +1

        Nice

      • +1

I'll definitely do this from now on. Some shopkeepers recoil from the Amex logo as if the card has leprosy or something

  • Wattle park pharmacy Melbourne can do AMEX myki reload.

    Who pays?
'AMEX picks up the $10 cost' is claimed by at least one poster in this long six page thread.
But I remain puzzled as to why some merchants limit use of AMEX under the "Shop Small" offer if, indeed, AMEX is paying the $10.
Why would some merchants charge a fee, or refuse AMEX, or limit the number of cards, during the offer period if they don't have to contribute to the $10?

Does anyone know the facts on who pays please?

Apologies if this has already been explained above - I did look for it, unsuccessfully.

    • +4

I think it's because AMEX charges retailers a higher fee than Mastercard/Visa whenever their card is used.

From the store's point of view, they don't benefit from this $10 promotion (apart from maybe increased patronage), however for them it means an increase in the number of times they get slapped with the high AMEX fee for every transaction done using AMEX.

      • I don't think AMEX charges the merchant a 'flat fee' per transaction. I think AMEX charges the merchant a percentage of each transaction, which means that all the merchant has to lose by splitting the transaction across two cards is time. The actual amount they pay to AMEX is the same. That's my understanding of it, after asking a couple of merchants.

But I am interested to know the answer to the question asked above, as to who actually pays the $10. If the merchant doesn't pay any of it, as is strongly implied by AMEX' wording in their promotion of Shop Small, then what I can't understand is why some places that do take AMEX, and are "small", would choose not be a part of it/opt out of it. As many obviously have this year [i.e. all the petrol places :( ]

        • I think visa/mastercard charges the business 1.1% per transaction, and Amex is around 2.something%.

I think Amex will pay for it however small businesses may struggle with what Amex charges them, which is why they refuse to take amex/ or add a surcharge onto the sale.
For example: A newsagent gets 9.5% profit for selling lotto tickets. The amex charge means they get ~7% profits which doesnt include rent/wages/bills.

        • @mmd: correct, but as a business owner i would rather ~7% profits, than a customer walking away and potentially never coming back again.

i dont understand some (small) businesses, the extra percentage isn't going to make you go broke, just less money at the end of the day, and less money is better than no money.

        • +1

          @t25:

Not necessarily. It's a numbers game. If everyone with an Amex walked away from a business for not accepting Amex then your argument possibly holds true. However if the majority simply end up using a different card instead then it may be more advantageous for the business not to accept it.

    • As reported 2 days ago!

      • Sorry about that. Posted on my phone, did not scroll through all the comments pages

  • Has anyone experienced when using the desktop web browser to find qualifying shops, the lists is way to short as oppose to when i used my phone to search nearby merchants, shops show up that don't on my desktop

  • MAP TIP

Buried in the comments above (credit to whomever spoke with Amex for this)

    1. Tick the "Redo search when map is moved"
    2. Now move the map.

Heaps more shops relevant to the zoom and area become visible.

    Tip 2

Zoom and move the map around. This may reveal another one or two places, hidden by other shops at the same location. (eg in shopping centres where they have similar addresses)

If anyone is on the Gold Coast, Capri on Via Roma has a couple of places on the shop small list. There's 'The Greener Grocer" which is a grocery store and has some decent specials on stuff. The other one is the Savilles butcher there which is great. It's next door to the grocer inside the centre.

Topped it off with 2 Thai dishes for $22 before credit. Nice.

      • I love how you were very close to the $20 cutoff. True Ozbargainer!

        • +1

Haha cheers mate. Hope you had a successful weekend too.

  • Did a couple of purchases at a pharmacy on the list, I got both my email's a few minutes later but my mum's purchase with her card (which I had registered for her) didn't. So odd.
All 3 of our cards are bank issued cards. I'll try to reach out to Amex.

    • I shopped 3 times, first 2 times no email second time email straight away. Just check your statements in a couple of days and contact them if it doesn't show up. No point emailing them now it takes a couple days to process but i agree the emails are really random

Anyone around Lane Cove area can recharge Opal from the Village Convenience Store at Arise Meriton Apartments. No Surcharge on Amex and email came straight away :)

    • 150-158 Epping Road Lane Cove. They close at midnight.

  • Good one bbq and yummy house in victoria park WA acept amex and recieved email from amex. Both charge 3%

  • arghh so disheartening when you ordered an extra dish to tip value above $20, then get told that the store do not accept AMEX eventhough they were listed in the Map

    • +1

Make sure you tell Amex about your ordeal and they'll credit you, according to reports here

    • you will have no prob still claiming . I went to a shopping centre and shopped at 4 places and 1 didnt take amex . rang today and it
wasnt listed anymore but apparently it was taken down due to complaints , they still gave me the credit

  • All credits for transactions made Friday and Saturday on Amex issued card came through today.
Still waiting for credits on Bank issued (usually they take a day or two longer to clear).

  • Got all three credits back on my DJs AMEX too! (all made on Friday)

I thought I'd be clever and get a $60 voucher for a restaurant split up into 3 seperate $20 transactions. Of course i didn't read fine print that it was only one cashback per business.

    • +1

you did it wrong, get a $60 voucher for a restaurant and split up into 3 separate $20 transactions, paid with 3 amex :p

  • Tong Li is so dodgy, they are on the list yet "We do not accept amex".

    • Which store? Hurstville Westfield took Amex yesterday.

      • Eastgardens, there is a sign with no amex.

        • Amex accepted at Chinatown

  • I was away camping Friday night and most of Saturday, so planned to do it all on Sunday. I forgot that two of the places I wanted to go to were closed on Sunday. I should have gone Saturday night.

I used 3x for breakfast (meal, plus 2 prepaid coffee cards), 2x for dinner (2x meals) and then 1x at a bar (2x beers).
I had another transaction left on each card that went unused. In hindsight, I could have gone to another restaurant and bought 3x gift vouchers.

There's a merchant, Elizabeth Pharmacy in Melbourne where I purchased $80 worth of Myki money (4 transactions) and didn't get anything back. THey even charged me $2 surcharge for each card I used. They even claimed that they were participating when I asked. I decided to just pay the $2 surcharge in the thought that I'd get $8 back still. But no, I've just been through Amex and they told me that these guys were not participating. When I called the shop they said that they were only charging 1% surcharge for transactions outside of the Amex Shop Small promotion. Guess who has the last laugh now? I've called ACCC and dob in this store. Looks like these shops can't simply just charge whatever amount they feel like charging.

    • +2

Amex will typically credit you in these circumstances, however the goodwill may not be too forthcoming if you've made 4 on different cards. It's really shitty for the store to do what they did but I don't think ACCC will do anything other than take your report.
