        • Yeah I mean once it's active, like there must be some motivation for registering 6 cards so I'm keen to get bargains too :)

        • Unless you live in the same area, my small shops will be different to yours so the bargains won't apply. As a start, my local Guzman y Gomez, pharmacy, produce, and fish shops are on the map so I'll be visiting them.

        • @haru: oh cool thanks. It's the first time I've signed up so I was just trying to get an idea but I'm in Sydney and it looks like everything is just in the CBD.

    • Signed up 8

  • Registered thanks. what's everyones tips for stores?

  • emporium gift cards, here I come!

    • Emporium Melbourne? I thought those card have a fee.

      • yep, cant remember how much exactly but I think $1.5.

The good thing is you can use it for the next year, not limited to this weekend :)

        • Is Emporium on the list?

        • I thought its $5 so a bit of a waste. And I'm not sure if is a "small shop".

        • Actually, last time (may 2016) the gift cards purchases weren't a valid cashback transaction.

I got the cashback on shop small November 2015, so still need to confirm this

  • So we can only get cashback once per merchant (per card)?

  • +1

Lots are not showing up on the map, but when I put their name in the search, it then shows up. So try this for your favourites from last year.

    • Do you think its just finding the business as it is a map but they aren't actually participating? Slim pickings in Melbourne CBD this year if this is the case.

      • +1

My guess is Amex is purposely disguising some retailers in the map such as petrol stations and opal recharging newsagents. You can only find them if you know their actual names. Whether we get cashback from those disguised retailers is another question we'll all find it out on the weekend.

        • When I search sushi about 10 'shops' come up and obviously there more than 10 in town so yeah .. a bit of a grey area, I searched other shops I was hoping would be on the list and it says 'not found' so will wait and see but looks promising. I always find these Amex offers confusing and follow up is needed.

      • You are probably right, from what Amex said.

    • +10

If you zoom in your area and click 'Redo search in this area' then more places will show up as blue dots.

      • +1

        Good find!

      • Yes, I was asking essentially the same question here. So if you click on "Redo search in this area", lots more places show as black dots. These are the ones which if you use the search box, put in the name, and they show. But they are not the balloons with a number, which corresponds to a store with details shown on the left pane.

I was wondering if these places will be eligible for the shop small cashback. Any thoughts? Thanks.

        • Yes, they are eligible. If you zoom in further and click redo search then the dots will turn into balloons.

        • @jackofspade: Hi, I rang Amex on this, pls see what they said for additional info. Yes, the ones that turn into balloons should be fine. Be careful of those that do not.

    Maps getting worse every time

    • there are hardly any shops on the map…
Small shops or "Small number of shops"?

      • There are many thousands (unless you're in Whoop Whoop). See comments above.

      • you need to tick the box in the right hand corner of the map then zoom into the suburb you want to shop in.

  • -1

According to the link, AMEX is picking up the bill, not the businesses.

"We’re sending Card Members through your door with a spend $20, get $10 back offer — on us*"

Can't find the asterix T&C though.

    • +1

Yea.. that's always the case. I haven't heard of a merchant funded promo that's advertised as an AMEX promo…

  • Seems like there are very few in Perth…

    • +1

There are heaps in Perth. Bear in mind that the map server was (is) having capacity issues and kept stating no results found for a while. Wait a few mins and refresh the whole Page and results will start appearing again.

      • Yeah went from 10 to 100 this time. Not bad, a few I could use.

        • Map will only show a maximum of 100 dots at a time. Zoom in to see all the shops in the area.

  • Damnit I promised myself to get a few more AMEXs to solve the limit problem on this last time. I got a $240 Myki on this about a year back for $130 or so.

    • Do you mind to share where/which shop did you topup the Myki? Thanks.

      • I can't recall, I made a map of it which was linked in one of the previous shop smart posts. I found about 11 stores but it is an old map now…

    6 cards registered. Thanks OP

    • 9 cards now!!

  • +1

I think the map site is already ozbaragained.
Also for amex issued cards the mobile app is probably an easier way to register.

  • offer activated. registered!! thanks!!

  • +7

I think the website has been Ozbargained. Or as the ABS would say, been attacked by Chinese hackers.

  • Any one successfully been able to manually enroll their secondary card eg: same account but spouses own card? Thanks

    • +1

Yes, when it has a different card number. (ie not Westpac and CBA cards)

      • Ok yes it's a different card number but keep getting The system cannot validate your Card information at this time. Please try again in a few hours.

    • All good was entering wrong email address

  • The store does not fork out the $10 - it is amex.
My workplace is listed as a destination :-)

    • +1

      Who said otherwise though?

  • Anyone know if this deal works with corporate cards? I'm trying mine and just getting the under construction error. Not sure if this is because the website has crashed or if its cause its a corporate.

    • Ignore me, should learn to read o.o

There are a few places that I have not found on the Shop Small map this year:
      Metro Lane Cove
      City Convenience Store North Sydney
      EzyMart Waverton

These places are confirmed on the Shop Small map:
      Nextra Newsagency, Chatswood Westfield
Convenience at the Cove, 116 Longueville Road Lane Cove
Neutral Bay Newsagency, 6 Young Street Neutral Bay

St James Pharmacy refused to do Opal topups last time.

I have no comment on the other locations.

      • +2

Thanks, I deleted those three from the map.

      • +1

Don't go to St James Pharmacy, they do not do any Opal top up.

        • +2

          That's what roughana just said…

  • +3

I just spoke with Amex, and was told this info, so I thought I will share it. It is the question which I asked here.
In the Shop Small map, if you click on "Redo Search In this Area", you will get lots of places with black dots. And you will also get balloons with numbers which correspond to store names/details on the left pane.

    • the balloons, Amex and we know for sure will participate in the shop small cashback.
    • black dots - (if they do not turn into balloons upon zoom) are places that accept Amex, but may or may not participate. If they participate, they will have a logo given by Amex, to this effect, displayed at the store.

So to be sure, if it is simply a place marked with black dot, best if you ring first, before going. Or make sure you see the logo about the "shop small" participation in store. Otherwise, it may not be part of "shop small".

    • WTF?

From what I can see the balloon with the numbers are the 10 shops that are currently listed on the left. When you click on the next page for the next 10, 10 new balloon with numbers show up and the ones that were previously ballons are now black dots!

      • +1

If they can turn to balloons, you will be fine. There are some dots that just won't turn to balloons. Those are the ones to be aware of. Anyway, I find if you move to the black dots and click on them, sometimes, they show as light blue balloons. Again, I interpret that as fine.

        • +1

          ok thanks

    • +2

Interesting, and weird that they wouldn't make that clearer. Thanks though.

  • +2

I know most ppl do but just a request to post locations you confirm sell Opal in Sydney as you find them :)

        • Guy at this shop is asking for $2 surcharge

        • @lokesh7: Did you give him the finger?… kidding.

        • +2

@illumination: was tempted to but i took the high approach and just told him to f**k off

        • +1

Haven't tried that one yet but just did

Wus pharmacy 629 George street - 50 cent surcharge per card
Ezy Mart 23 Rawson Place - $1 charge per card

          Got emails for both

        • @CheapskateQueen: I topped up Opal at Wu's pharmacy yesterday and yet to receive any emails… Called up Amex and they said they can't do anything since it's a bank issued Amex.

        • @agito1993:

was the card eligible for the offer? seems odd that if the card was registered for the offer and used at a registered store that amex wouldn't honour it? they're usually good like that. maybe push a little harder for free $10 credit

        • @CheapskateQueen: it should be since the offer show up in my acct. I will call Anz tmr and see if they can do anything. Good thing the surcharge there is 0.5

    • Neutral Bay Newsagency, 6 Young Street Neutral Bay

      • $1 surcharge & email received.

      • Same experience - email received after 59 mins. $1 surcharge

  • OP looks like the map URL you posted - www.shopsmallaustralia.com/map isn't working.
    https://maps.americanexpress.com/aushopsmall#/ this works

  • Hooters Parramatta is on the map for any of our gentlemen interested.

  • +1

Lot's of places to charge opal in CBD!

    • +2

Can you tell us where? Most of the newsagents are no longer on the list.

      • Search for EzyMart. They may not provide Opal top-ups, but it is a start.

      • The ones I went to in the cbd are still there. Just match it up.

I bet they are hiding because they don't want to do multiple opal recharges.

      • Wu's pharmacy is good. Had a pretty cheap surcharge last time.

      • The Ezymart in Randwick (166 Belmore Rd, Randwick, NSW) worked for me, topped up my Opal card no problem, got email from Amex straightaway. Note that there is a 70 cents surcharge for Opal transactions.

    • Sydney CBD?

    • +2

MLC centre newsagency don't do opal recharge on Amex.

  • same brand different store location counts as different participating small business?

    • +2

      yes

  • -5

Any opal recharge places based in Sydney?

    • Why was this negged??

      • Too lazy to do his own research/too broad a question? Sydney's a big place after all.

      • There were two prior answers above so they hadn't read the thread.

  • anyone know if emporium gc is still part of shop small?
