Picked up the classic model of this for $69 from Masters a few weeks ago. Works well and the visual notification of cost seems to be a good deterrent.

The classic model allows you to plug into a PC via USB and download the data for charts etc.

Bought one from a previous deal and happy with it.

  • Does that clamp go on your meter or just around a power cord in the house?

    • +1

Goes in the switchboard. Usually around the active wire coming into the top of your main switch. Be careful!

      • My switchboard has 3 meters on 3 different lines coming in. Would I need 3 of these monitors? Or can I order 2 extra clamps from somewhere

        • You lucky 3 phaser you!

You could use 3 meters on each phase. Not sure if these have multiple clamp inputs?

        • @sharkfan12:

Lol, what are the advantages of having access to more than the typical single phase? Not planning on running hydroponics :P
I guess I'd be somewhat protected from a blackout unless they disconnect power on all the phases at the same time

        • @sharkfan12: My classic one allows up to 4 inputs

          @warhead:

Allows you to run high power items - ie. larger air conditioning units etc.

and yes, sometimes in the case of blackouts you can still have power depending on where the fault is etc.

        • According to this (http://efergy.com/au/comparison/) it supports 3 phase, but you would need extra clamps. Before I got the smart meter here (and could get rid of clamps and instead use a zigbee device) I needed three clamps to monitor all three phases.

        • Does it have three going out? You could clamp on the active cable after the meter.

        • Yep, sparky installed this at my house which is 3 phase. You need to buy two extra clips here.. http://efergy.com/au/products/accessories/microjackplug-extr… @ 19.95 each + $7.95 shipping.. So about $47.85 all up. Don't bother with the XL sensor clips, very rarely do residental buildings use that (what their rep told me). The transmitter has 3 ports where you can plug in the clips.

You can also use this to monitor your solar as well. People with 3 phase solar, need 3 clips total (one supplied, 2 need to buy). Also note, you can't have multiple monitors (if that's what you're thinking). I wanted to have a monitor downstairs and one in my room monitoring the same power box, but unfortunately the transmitter only syncs with 1 monitor.

FYI, I have a SMA Sunny Home Manager & Energy Meter which is suppose to be pretty accurate since they came with my solar install, the boxes alone cost $1409 (for both). Comparing it to the Efergy monitor, it seems the Efergy monitor always shows 20% less or more.. So I think there is some inaccuracy, which seems to be what people on whirlpool are saying. It works OK as a baseline guide monitor, but I wouldn't trust the numbers to be exact due to the way the monitors work.

Right now, my SMA energy monitor shows:
          Total consumption: 1.833 kW
          Efergy monitor: 2.345kW

        • @warhead: well it costs a small fortune to install it (as the power company needs to add two more wires to your house, then a sparkie needs to wire it up).

It's highly unlikely to help you in a power outage. The wires all run on the same pole, so it'd only help if there was a fault with only one wire. Then you'd also have to split your single phase power points across the three different phases.

        • @warhead:
Draw power on 2 phases and feed in solar on the 3rd at 50c/kwh :-)

        • @warhead:

3 phase motors are more efficient, so if you have a large air con, the 3 phase equivalent will be cheaper to run.

  • Anyone see stores with stock?

    • Yes - in Brisbane
But I got one installed free from a Qld Gov service years ago. Used for a few months, then like most people I know, never looked at it again.

      • +1

Send it to Mikmac sounds like he's use it!

      • Message me if u want to sell it! Maybe ill use it once and then never look at it again too :)

        • Looked for it a few days ago - gone or lost :-(

        • Cheers all the same!

    • West Aus has a few

    • Put your location in your profile.

Horton Park has, but not discounted. Most other Sydney store out of stock but showing $39.

  • I use 2 and the hub to output to pvoutput works great

  • Would these work fine with a sub box?

Just bought a townhouse and only just found out that the actual meter box is locked away on the side of another townhouse (it's only a complex of 5) and no one seems to know who had the key apart from Synergy.

So I've got a sparky coming to install some power points next week so would get him to install this at the same time, but don't want to buy it if it needs to be put into the actual meterbox cable in as opposed to sub box.

    Any one know?

    • I don't see why it wouldn't, isn't it just a basic clamp meter with a wireless readout?

      • Yeah that's what I figured, but haven't had much experience with sub boxes apart from ones in say a shed or ancillary building.

I think Master's return policy is pretty decent anyway, and will give the sparky a call before I pick it up to confirm anyway. Cheers Jackson.

  • I own this unit but AGL recently upgraded my meter (for free) so now I can monitor my usage via the AGL app(for free), making this unit useless.

The monitoring is free but if you have solar they charge $15 PER MONTH??

  • bought one ..
    plenty in South Morang BTW

the problem is - I have smart meter installed and cannot see ANY wires..
so there is nothing I can attach this unit to..
I guess will have to return

    • +1

Its behind the meter board - I'd strongly suggest you use an Electrician, there's all sorts of cables behind there including the unfused, un-RCD'd main line coming into the property.

      • yes, I found cables behind the board and attached the transmitter.
second issue I had - meter box is metal, so when I close the door there is no signal coming through.
installing outside the metal box - transmitter is not weather proved.

So, just returned the monitor back to Masters

        • Yeah was same for me - transmitted fine over maybe 30m. Metal meter box and about 3 brick walls.

        • I picked up the E2 Classic and it works fine in my metal subbox, even when upstairs.

Only got to play around with it a little when the sparky was there doing some other things, I only have a subbox so wanted to see when I was using power as I don't have spinning dial to see. Problem is, found a base load of about 200W when barely anything was plugged in, had it all unplugged as Western Power were doing some work this morning so wanted to make sure nothing would get fried when the power came back on.

Any one else found a fairly high base load using these? They say they're accurate to 1W which has me worried about where the power is going to!

        • @Porthos:

Fridges perhaps, high standby use, WiFi modem.

Only way to be sure is to go to your meter box - switch the main switch off and check that it registers 0W.

Just remember solar can mess it up - mine shows 200W when 200W is going back into the grid (day) and can also show 200W when its coming out (night) or 400W draw (day) - if that makes sense. Isolating the solar will eliminate this though.

        • @hoxygt: Yeah basically anything that would have been on standby was turned off at the wall (as I said I didn't want them to get fried when the power came back on or if it was going on and off heaps).

Will have a look over the weekend and do each circuit switch and narrow it down that way, I have a funny feeling it might be the power usage of the 2 split system reverse cycle aircon's as it is keeping the oils in the system warm for immediate start.

They can use anywhere from 50-100W each from what I've read, so that would explain a large part of the power usage, although not sure if the ones I have have this heater in them. Will have to search up the model number when I get home.

  • Works fine for me in the steel meter box

Through quite a few walls and about 10-15m line of sight.
