Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam Return ex Perth $288, Melb $364 @ Air Asia (Aug-May)

The Melbourne fare is actually around $70 cheaper than a direct flight to Kuala Lumpur (scratches head). Anyway, heaps of seats and dates available for travel Aug-Nov & Jan-May. I've left Sydney and Gold Coast off as they're over $100 more expensive. And below are the usual screenshots. Enjoy :)

    How about Sydney ???!@#!@#

Left it out as it's a little on the expensive side at $478 return.

    YES? What about Sydney?

Layover times are a deal breaker for me. In the dates I want, looking at minimum 15 hours layover. For those that can deal with it fantastic price. Thanks op

I wish people would mention this stuff in the heading. Should be a rule.

Once you add the luggage it is not so cheap.

Try a holiday to a SE Asia destination with carry on. 7kg is lots (and we have never been weight checked by air asia), there's no need for checked in, the only thing we couldn't find cheap overseas is sunscreen, so take 3x100ml tubes of sunscreen in your carry on instead of any other liquids. Toothpaste, deodorant and fake aftershaves are very cheap over there.

Asia is generally warm and humid, all you really need is lightweight cotton clothing. Once you're there most stuff is very cheap, so travelling light is easy. Once you've tried travelling with only a carry-on bag, you'll never go back to check-in again, so much more convenient and quicker wherever you go.

  • Will I be able to buy this leg but complete journey at KL? Are you able to retrieve luggage or it goes straight to Vietnam?

    • Luggage goes straight to Vietnam unless you request to get it in KL

  • But what about SydBargain?

      Hitchhike to Melbourne.

  • On the dates I'm looking at, it is $306 RT, ticket only. Malindo is $383, which I believe includes luggage and some food and drink. I have started to fly "full service" more frequently due to luggage fees which seem to have risen quite a bit.

  • Two things, why is it more expensive from sydney?
And, whats with the lengthy stopovers? What can or cant you do during those? (always flew direct on previous trips elsewhere)

On your second question: As AirAsia now uses the KLIA terminal, it's easy to catch the express train up to the city (KL Sentral station).
Looking at the fares last night, numerous seemed to have a 9 or 10 hour stopover in KL on the way home. In the past we've killed this time by going up into the city, having a wander around, and eating as much street food as possible :)

AirAsia uses KLIA2 (it used to use the LCC Terminal), which is different to KLIA. However both KLIA and KLIA2 are on the train line to KL Sentral… :-)

And in true TA fashion, take the bus between KLIA2 and KL Sentral for a massive saving. Takes approx 50-75 minutes depending on traffic. Bus is RM11 (about $3.50) and train is RM55 (about $18) per person per direction

Buy the KLIA Express ticket online with Mastercard and get 20% off Single/Return fares

  • Book through expedia - use cashrewards = profit

  • Also be aware that Zika is endemic in Vietnam

    • It's been found in Vietnam. Definitely not endemic.
