  • Hope they handle it better than Big W

Big W customers across Australia have written of their "disgust and anger" at the handling of the sale of the new Harry Potter book.

    • The books are better at … Kmart?

PS that article is hilarious, people getting their knickers in a knot over a $5 saving!

And getting surprised that "stock was limited". It's not like Big W had a printing press out back, and 50 to 150 books in certain stores based on that article certainly indicates to me that they had some stock, just higher demand. What did people expect from a Harry Potter launch…that no one else would want a copy?

those are the same people who buy a $19 flight on Tiger and go ape over the "service" they get/dont get….

  • No stock all store in Brisbane, save your phone calls. Apparently it was launched on Sunday and sold out on the same day. No idea when they will have no stock I was told so, yes, they are just as bad ad the Big W launch.

    • Yep, sold out within 1 hour of opening on Sunday at 3 Big W's near me. I had to travel a bit to get a copy.

given the other deal was marked expired I reckon your post's still valid OP :) still +1 for the effort

  • Yep, sold out all around.

They know it's going to be a popular book, and each store gets like 25 copies. WUT???

  • Review said its a bad book, not written by jk Rowling, its direct screen play text. No detail.

I'm a hp fan, but I can't be bothered to read this.

  • Is the book actually worth reading? Or it more like the latest season of Top Gear…

    • Most people on places like reddit are ambivalent to it and don't really consider it canon. A few have talked about having taken theirs back. Apparently its story is basically an average fanfiction. Casual Harry Potter fans seem to like it but for people who really like Harry Potter it opens up too many plot holes to be a good story.

well when I walked into bigw at 9:10am; I found a book.
I saw clothes that I liked and went into the change room to try on and the work lady had 10 copies at the back for there workers on hold. so you know where all the books went. reminds me of Dick smith

  • The site shows it for $20, not $15?

  • I'm sure people preordered from Dymocks(selling for $30) then when they saw the Big W/K-mart deal, bought it for $15.00 instead.

Then when stores like Dymocks close down - we complain that we have no where to buy from…

You could buy from KMart or Big W then. I don't see why consumers should be compelled to support stores charging twice the price of other retailers. If Big W or Kmart can set a stupidly low price based on the ability to sell through other goods (which may not even be what they've done here), then that's a sign to me that Dymocks should diversify and provide more upswell options at the register, not bitch and moan about being a book retailer that can't offer competitive prices on books.

If they close down it's probably going to be because people were already shopping elsewhere and Dymocks as a retailer failed to resonate with buyers.

But that's the thing - we can't buy it from Kmart and Big-w due to insufficient stock.

So they probably sell it at a 'loss' to get us in the door, buy some other things we don't need and basically at the same time eliminate the competition.

End result is : no retailers left who actually stock items when required, even when you are prepared to pay a premium for it.

My partner preordered online for $20 so had no issue getting a copy, and if customers feel $30 is a fair price and Dymocks has stock they can go get that $30 copy. Dymocks going bankrupt won't change the buying habits of people who aren't prepared to pay more than Big W or Kmarts $15 to $20 anyway.

It seems to me that Big W and Kmart DID have stock, just not enough for people that didn't get there early day one. Very few books have launches like Harry Potter and I'm not sure why people are surprised demand was high. Honestly, preordering is a simple affair if you can't wait a couple of weeks for a restock.

Besides, if Dymocks hadn't ordered any units that may have allowed other retailers to order more. I imagine limited stock was due to tight distribution levels, not because stores didn't want more units.

@Smigit: Fair enough, I see your side of the argument and that makes sense. Cheers.
