I used to subscribe to Audible, but nowadays, I get almost everything I need from a few local libraries using Borrowbox and Libby.
    Completely 'free' too.

Can’t speak of Libby highly enough, it’s been excellent.

      • What do you use it for? Not much there for our needs (kids audiobooks from Sunshine Coast Library). SCL's collection on Borrowbox OTOH is exteeeeeensive.

Mostly thriller and fiction novels. The BCC Library have an excellent Lee Child collection.

With kids, it’s hard to find time to curl up with a book, but you are constantly driving the kids around to appointments, so an Audiobook works well for me.

Don't forget Hoopla. The benefit of hoopla is they have shows /movies as well as comics, audiobooks and ebooks. There are no wait times either.

Came here to say exactly that! I'm on Borrowbox 24/7, as my son is an avid listener of audiobooks. The app could use with some improvements — showing which books we've already borrowed, and when, for one — but it's pretty great as it is; practically 'free' Audible.

      • Any tips as to which libraries have the best Borrowbox library (in NSW)? While Libby allows me to search all libraries I have a card with, Borrowbox only allows you to be signed in to one at a time, so it's hard to know who has the best range.

Good to know! I've quite a few (just moved around a bit).

          True!

No, sorry, I discovered it in the last year, and have only used it with Sunshine Coast Library.

@wisdomtooth: Yeah, in true Ozbargain fashion I downloaded a spreadsheet of all the libraries in NSW. I joined all the ones that have online sign up, and then whenever I was driving near a library with in person sign up I'd pop in and get a card.

So my Libby is now mighty powerful with 17 cards 🤣

Having said that, I find that most of the titles end up coming from the same two or three libraries which seem to have the best collection.

            • @Lurk Hartog: You have my admiration!

              And the winners are…?
              (asking for a friend ;))

@wisdomtooth: Northern Beaches is seemingly the best
                Parramatta
                eLibrary 24/7
                City of Sydney
                Ku-Ring-Gai

Check the websites of each to see what the sign-up process is like, and whether you can access online resources without picking up a physical card.

From memory, Northern Beaches, Sydney and Ku-Ring-Gai all require you to pick up a card in person. Can't remember the others.

                Good luck!

                • @Lurk Hartog: With… proof of address?

@wisdomtooth: Most of the councils in Sydney have reciprocal arrangements with the other councils so that you are able to join as long as you live in NSW. There are a few exceptions. Outside of Sydeny they generally say that you must "reside or work" in the area, and so I didn't bother with those ones.

    • I found that Borrowbox and Libby didn’t have a particularly bug range, especially of well known authors - at least in our local Newcastle library.

Audible has the facility to listen at a faster speed, which I like. I don't know about the others.

I used to buy books when they came on special - a single book daily, and quite a few monthly - now that ny membership has expired, i have perhaps 12 months of listening before I need to rejoin.

I've joined multiple libraries, so almost everything I am after is found.
You can easily switch between each library and search.
Of course, it'll never be as comprehensive and easy to use as Audible, but the price difference reflects that, hence the mention of it on this forum.
Many people I work with had no idea that their libraries offered this service and are now well-embedded with Libby and other similar apps/services.

        Borrowbox and Libby do too.

If you're like me, you want to listen to audiobooks but are mostly listening to podcasts.

Consider using Spotify's free 15 hours a month of audiobooks to see if you really will get use out of an audible subscription.

    • +1

wow never knew about this , thanks for sharing . Very useful

    • +1

Some people can also save on their Spotify costs by downgrading to the version of premium without the audiobook costs - it’s called “basic” but it’s just premium without the audiobooks and you can save $1-3 a month

  • $0.99/M for The First 3 Months then $16.45/M after

With the hope that you forget to cancel the subscription after 90days + you'll pay three more months without using it. Nice try!

    • not ozbargainers , we use revolut cards which would be destroyed until then :)

      • +1

Or just cancel right after buying

        • +1

you can't, else you miss out on the next 2 months as it needs to debit 0.99 every month

    • From my experience, audible support is quite generous with refunding past purchases made in mistake.

    • set a reminder to cancel in middle March

  • +7

I take these offers up whenever they appear ( usually a few times per year ) and set a calendar reminder at the start of month 3 to cancel subs

  • Hmm, I'm on the trial - anyone know if you cancel can you sign up to this?

    • I tried this, and if your trial ends after the end-date of this promotion, then no, you can't.

Thanks OP - never received any email although your link worked for me. I only re-subscribe when there is a really great offer, , I have been an Audible user for over 5 years - I have over 60 Audio books at 1 credit each and nearly a hundred free ones which stay on the account even when you don't renew - - My total expenditure is $78 over this time (plus $3 / 3 more books today),
As most Ozbargainers know, wait until nearly the end of subscription to cancel, then you are normally offered another great deal for an extra month or two to keep you interested.

    • Same, worked for me!

  • Thanks OP, I only cancelled 3 days ago after declining my retention offer (12 months for the price of 10, nothx!) but the link worked for me!

  • Would rather the american version. Their catalogue is far better.

    • I have a separate audible.com account and I got the same offer on that as on my .au, so it's worth a try!

  • worked for me , thanks

  • worked for me too, thanks OP

  • Legend 🙂 I was not targetted with one of my accounts but I followed the link and voila! Thanks
