  • Looks pretty good, +1 from me

EDIT: I missed the OzB coupon, even better!

  • I like these OzB coupons!, keep 'em coming :)

  • Nice computer for this price.
    A bargain.

  • +1

    generally nice specs, good warranty

but what's with the "CPU that time forgot"

    ddr3 AND a T6570

bit of an odd pairing there… would pay a bit more for a better cpu

  • Hi QQQ,
    How's the battery life?

    • +4

I can't say, we have one of these in our photo studio and use it basically to play WoW/Heroes of Newerth while pretending to work. Haven't tested battery longevity, gaming performance is well decent though. Ours has a 512MB graphics chip for which we paid $890, the one for sale today is 1GB.

      • -5

Hi QQQ, I guess you forgot your manager is part of this website as well, rather than disappointing my customers by not thoroughly checking stock and playing real-time strategies whilst pretending to work, you can find yourself no longer an employee of CatchOfTheDay. And yes, I'm serious.

        • +3

          Haha. Busted!

            @Mnke: Bahahah. Too funny!

@Mnke: Isn't it in a court of law a confession isn't neccessary legal proof? Or am I dreaming, haha.

          • +1

            @Mnke: oh snap!!

Like - check Cripto's posts - COTD Manager??? - rofl

          • @Ozem61: Hahaha, if Cripto works for COTD his manager should fire him for posting deals from other companies. Still, good for a laugh. lol!

        • +5

          Too funny :)

    • +2

Overall very good performance for price.

Negatives: Mostly to do with mobility
Battery life = These people say up to 2 hours. credible? — http://www.laptopfactoryoutlet.com.au/specs/Asus/k50id_sx105…
      Weight = 2.6kg.
Processor = T6570 which is an entry level dual core and uses 35W (probably why low battery life) — http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=42841

Oh no! Not COTD! I ordered an Asus laptop with them and on arrival discovered it was missing three (!) features advertised. Not to mention the time trying to get bluetooth working that actually was missing all together..no xp downgrade disc..CPU actually less than what was stated. Finally got refund. Consider that advertised specifications may actually be missing all toegether.
These dodgy brothers flog off seconds.

    • I was about to purchase until I saw your comment. You have convinced me not to purchase from COTD. Thanks for causing me to avoid any frustration. Cheers.

      • +4

All chyawala has done on OzBargain is post negatives on deals. Probably one thats best ignored.

        • i checked out his history too, agreed!

      • As someone who bought more than 5 times in COTD, I'm truly happy with their service. Never once they disappoint me. The prices are great and they deliver it fast. Don't get influenced by one negative comment. you should try and ask those with positive experience in shopping with them as well.

We have about 8 people here working in customer service, and 5 people in the ad making department, all of whom are very offended to be called "dodgy brothers", never mind that half of the team are female, these people work hard.

Any mistake is just that - a human error.

For every unhappy customer, we successfully have shipped to thousands of happy customers.

If ANYTHING goes wrong, the boys and girls in CS will make sure you are HAPPY.

If this is not what you experienced, please get in touch with me [email protected], I'll make it right.

I received a faulty LCD monitor from COTD. After notifying COTD, they arranged free postage to send the item back and after about 2 weeks I got my money refunded. Returns procedure was very smooth.

syl, if COTD did not have a spare laptop to send you then of course they offer a refund. What did you expect? If you were after a repair then it's customary to contact the company that made the laptop. They will tell you where to drop off the machine or arrange free postage. It's industry standard practice. Sending it back to the original shop (especially if it's an online retailer) and expecting the retailer to forward on the machine to the manufacturer just introduces delays.

          • +1

@Cluster: I have bought many things from COTD and only got one faulty digital photo frame, returned postage was free of charge and got a replacement fairly quickly.

          • +2

@Cluster: Some people value time, that's why some people complain whether they get a refund or not.

            • +3

@[Deactivated]: Some people valuing time makes it sound like others don't value time at all.

Seeking to have an item repaired instead of refunded actually takes longer than just getting the money back and purchasing the item elsewhere (assuming COTD doesn't have something that cannot be bought at any other store). If Syl didn't want to waste time he/she should have been happy with a refund. As soon as they know a refund is coming the money can be used to purchase the item elsewhere. Very time efficient. Maybe Syl is just blaming COTD for selling a faulty product, which would be silly indeed as the company that made the item is to blame and not the retailer.

              • +1

@Cluster: COTD is an online business, and as you know, online businesses are harder to deal with and so are couriers. If you ever studied business, you should know that it is the business' priority to make electronic shopping easier than what it should be under COTD, not the consumer. Receiving a refund means you've wasted time for nothing, while getting it repaired means that you have wasted more time at least for the product that you desired so much. If people are complaining (And I've seen many on this site), COTD should look for methods for increasing customer satisfaction and customer retention so they can increase long-term profits, not treat them like people who can't think for themselves and aren't valuable. Suggesting that human errors happen will not fix the issue or help people who are pissed off, and suggesting that there are a lot of people that are working hard only signifies that the employees are either doing their job improperly due to management issues or there is an under supply of staff. If the product is faulty people blame the first contact from where they purchase from, it's as simple as that, that's why you see people blaming receptionists for jobs that were made by other functions like bookkeepers or the made product so that receptionists can pass the message to management or the supplier or even the manufacturer. Serving excuses is the worst method for customer retention, I hope COTD can learn from that.

                • +5

@[Deactivated]: Proving that no matter the effort the business goes to, some will never be happy.

So if they have no more stock to replace your item with, what is your suggestion to fix the situation?

Im laughing at the suggestion that human error is a fault of management issues. I guess you have never made a mistake.

You make a purchase from an online retailer knowing full well that in the event of an issue you will have delays and longer time is needed to resolve the issue. If that risk is too great, then go to a bricks and mortar store and pay extra for the security you are after.

                  • @AntMan76: If there are many human errors made, it's managements fault, they employ the people for the business, they train the employees and they motivate them, or at least they are supposed to. Of course there may be delays, but not to the extent of always saying have a refund because its the easiest thing we can do. Like I said, pure-play businesses can be as reliable as bricks and mortar businesses if a good business structure implemented, but COTD doesn't seem to try to accomplish that.

                    • @[Deactivated]: Jared,

Making such a statement based on 4 comments posted on the internet?

Its a question of scale. Serve 1000 customers, with under 1% fault rate, thats one complaint. Serve 500,000 customers with under 1% fault rate thats 500 complaints.

Come take a tour one day, see what we are trying to accomplish.

Its all I have to say on the issue.

Anyone with a genuine problem, knows where to get it solved, e-mail papa bear [email protected]

                      • @QQQ - CatchOfTheDay: I don't know your internal statistics, but remember there are many that have the trait of not complaining and let things go. I'm just providing constructive criticism, although my tone may seem harsh, I don't mean any harm. If you think that your fault rate is that low and your happy with it, then carry on. Try to reach six sigma now ;)

                      • +2

@QQQ - CatchOfTheDay: It seems like you missed the maths classes, mate! 1% out of 1000 is 10 not 1 and 1% out of 500000 is 5000 not 500, cheers.

called asus.. n they say COTD will handle them since i just got it for a couple of days.. im quite happy to wait for a repair actually.. at least i know im getting something out of this emailing and waiting

the asus i got werent even sold out on COTD.. so i dont know WHY they said its out of stock…. didnt even see.. ALMOST GONE
all i have is a refund!

just say u bought a 50" lcd.. u get home, open it all set up n realise it it doesnt work. You drive it back n they tell you they'll give u a refund instead of exchanging it. will you be happy?

worst thing is.. they dont even have a number for us to call…. for a business that have "1000s of happy customers" isnt that weird?

                  • @syl: So are you getting it fixed or refund?

I would prefer to get it replaced, and if they can't replace it. I would prefer a refund, don't want to be left with a faulty product that who knows if it can be fixed. At the end of the day it will take more of your time.

                    • -3

                      @Matador_OZ: 1ST EMAIL..
                      replace
2 hours later another email… REFUND..

it wasnt even a bargain so it cant be sold out!
but anyway.. they said its out of stock..
guess it cheaper for them this way

                      • +7

@syl: Hi Syl, how about you e-mail me [email protected]

Send me either your catch e-mail address, order number or ticket ID and I can trace the issue.

I'd like to turn what seems to have been a negative experience to a positive one.

                  • +3

@syl: If I bought a 50" LCD, got it home and found it was faulty, I would be happy with the store offering a replacement. If they cannot, I would equally be happy with a refund because it means I can buy the TV elsewhere. What I wouldn't want is the store to take back the brand new TV and promise to repair it. That would be a waste of my time.

The 50" LCD example is a very bulky item, which is not the case with a laptop. The example given should be between buying a faulty laptop at COTD and buying it through a store, to keep the example fair. Otherwise it's just loaded with bias.

    • I have found COTD good to deal with in the past. They usually say the truth :)

    • +1

Haha the only time I've been disappointed with COTD is when they hadd that PS3 at an incredibly low price and ran out in about 5mins with the site crashing everytime I managed to get on and click buy, and when they said they'll sell the Wii only for me to stay up almost the whole night to be dissappointed (and when I woke up I found out that the Wii never went on sale).

    • -2

      Have a cry.

  • +1

i got my current laptop from COTD, happy with it!

    • i should add in that in my case, when i bought the HP 2112TX the screen resolution was actually HIGHER than what was stated in the COTD advert!

  • +1

Don't want to be the deal breaker over here..

but I would prefer to wait for another 2-3 weeks for the End of Financial Year Sale bargain…

For the same price you might..

    • Get a better CPU processor spec (even an i3 is better)
    • BluRay Drive
    • and also USB 3.0 for connectivity…

but if you really really need it now…for the price.. I guess it's quite a decent spec..

    Good Luck

    =)

    • +2

all that for the same price?? probably nearing a grand even with a huge sale.

    • might…

    • Last laptop i ordered from COTD it took over a month to arrive.

  • +1

    my brother has ordered 1

my experience with cotd is good i order alot of stuff off there my only issue is the time it takes to get to me which is undestandable cos i couldnt imagine the amount of orders they deal with

  • i have bought at least 8 things from COTD and i have never had a problem. I recommend them to my family and friends always. Their comment about making us happy if we are dissatisfied about something only makes their deals sweeter now!

    • Yup.. agreed with that..

They are a well trusted Online Shop..

I bought many items from them as well…

  • Got my vote since it a good price with free shipping, but I don't need one atm. Keep up the good work QQQ.

  • can someone tell me how to use the ozb_asus code?

oop, nvm, worked it out, dont click Paypal on the Cart Page, click check out first. =)

  • i regret bought acer from cotd few weeks ago, should wait and get this 1

  • +1

Got my vote too - QQQ went out of his way to fix up my last order

  • Def would like to buy one… But have spent to much money with COTD recently :P

FYI - I had a few incorrect items sent from COTD and new items where sent a few weeks later… bit of a wait but happy in the end :)

    • I've ordered about three times from COTD and have no complaints (shipping can take a week or two to even be dispatched so take care you're not ordering for anyone's birthday etc)

  • -2

This Asus Laptop was offered to all Asus distributors and resellers last week, If you dislike COTD You'll be able to find similar prices across the county at this price in the next few days.

    • +5

No chance, not close to our price. Not even counting the PayPal cashback and free shipping.

  • +1

i dont know about the laptop, my only issue with CoTD has been with shoes, they were smaller than advertised and when i mentioned this to customer service, their response was "lots of our customers have had success reselling these on eBay". I took this to mean that they'd had a lot of complaints. Ended up giving them to a neighbour who's 2 sizes smaller than me and they fit well.

    • +2

When you are buying shoes online you are asking for trouble

  • +1

Sometimes you just have to think, why they are so cheap…much cheapper than anybody else.
I would't mind receive a copy of an orginal iphone shell at 1/3 of the price. But definintly not happy with anything $500+ with random scarch/faulty on them…

I bought a wireless mouse n keyboard from COTD, cheap with a free pair of earphone….but i realise i never use them coz the quality is much lower than i expected…

  • Bought this but missed the free shipping code.
Can anyone tell me how do I claim for the paypal cash back?

    • I think the OP advised that there's no claim process, "just hang tight for 21 days".

  • Well, if anyone remembers the Prince Tennis shoes a few weeks ago, Catch of the Day really don't seem to do that well:

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/25470

You have to wonder how many people actually got their shoes?

If you look at the below site, there are more people who complain about lack of service and problems.

    http://www.shopau.com.au/gadgets/catch-of-the-day/

    Good luck on your purchases!

    • +1

You can't really make a fair assessment about whether they've satisfied more customers than they've left unhappy. People who have a very pleasant transaction are, of course, generally silent. People who have an unpleasant transaction are generally more vocal. As QQQ said, if 1% of customers are unhappy, that's still a lot of complaints around the place.

I'm not saying 1% is justified, and I'm sure the COTD team strive to make everyone happy, but sometimes there is just no pleasing some people. The above examples are a case in point — a faulty product, no replacement is available(out of stock) and they have the option of refunding or repairing. The customer is complaining about a swift solution. Sure, the ideal solution would've been a replacement, but you have to appreciate that there's not always something even the big bad retailers can do. And if a replacement is what the customer wants, then of course there's going to be even more time involved in sourcing the product and that's just going to create an unhappier customer that's left in the dark.

  • +1

Just having a read through and have to give a plug to QQQ, that's good customer service! Well Done!

  • -7

AWESOME CORE 2 DUO - is that new lol….. pay an extra 300 dollars for an i5 ;)

    • +4

Pay almost 50% more and get a better product. Who would have thought.

  • -2

Can the OS be downgraded to XP Pro if desired?
I'm sure it would run a lot better on XP than Windows 7 with the older CPU wouldn't it??

    Just found this: http://oem.microsoft.com/script/contentpage.aspx?pageid=5528…

May help others who are unsure about going to Win 7

    • +3

You're joking right? A Core2Duo Processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 1GB of dedicated graphics isn't enough to handle Windows 7 smoothly? You're really joking right? There's nothing wrong with Windows 7. It's not Windows Vista. It doesn't hog the system resources like Vista did. There's no reason why you should still want XP when Windows 7 is being offered on a PC with this sorta specifications (unless you have essential software thats not Windows 7 compatible).

      • I haven't used Windows 7 at all yet.I was only thinking about the CPU being a bit slow and the graphics card, while having 1GB of memory is still a low spec compared to others. But for XP these specs are all good, even the slower CPU.
I will try Windows 7 and if it's no good,i'll downgrade.
Can you dual boot both Windows 7 and XP?

        • +1

Yes of course you can dual boot Windows 7 and XP if you have a copy of each software to install - although it's probably easier to use XP in a virtual machine on the Windows 7 host.

The CPU is not "a bit slow". It's medium-end CPU but at the high-end. Of course it's not the fastest CPU, but really for $700 what do you expect? This CPU would be fine for most users' needs.

          • @camelgrass: I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's still a fairly fast CPU. Okay, it's a medium-end CPU in terms of what currently out there, but really - it'd still be a very fast machine. Any Core2Duo over 2Ghz makes for a fast machine for general use.

And yes, Windows 7 would run great…. I'm running 7 on a laptop far, far older and slower than this and it runs beautifully. :)

For the price I think this machine is awesome.

            • +1

@MrGareth: whitey, Its odd that you drew a conclusion about Windows 7 even before using it. Windows 7 runs on most netbooks albeit without the Aero interface, but it still does. And its one of the best products Microsoft released in a really long time. Enough so to dissuade a lot of people that were migrating to MACs and Linux (mostly Ubuntu).

Anyway, the hardware listed here should handle Window 7 no problems. And Core 2 Duo and a 1GB graphic card (even if they are of a lower end line) should MORE than suffice to most users. I honestly cannot think of any reason why the hardware listed here would be considered sub-par unless you're a gamer. Only gamers might complain that this is a lacking device. Then again, I don't know any gamer that would even consider a Core 2 Duo laptop in 2010.

    • +2

Windows XP will not be able to use all the available 4GB of RAM. It will only see 3GB or 3.5GB.

      • +2

Only partly correct. Windows XP 32-bit will not be able to address all 4GB ram. Windows XP 64-bit should be fine.

    • +1

I bought the cheaper Acer notebook deal on COTD a few weeks ago, same CPU as this ASUS, only 2GB DDR3 RAM and integrated GPU, but it runs win 7 home premium 64bit real well I tell ya!

      • That's good to know.I take it you don't play any graphic intensive games on it then? I was more worried about gaming and multimedia than anything else.

        • I only play games on my consoles! However, I was only referring to the performance of win 7 with the specs provided. Also, the integrated GPU (Intel GMA 4500MHD) worked adequately for my multimedia's needs; as I use AVC software, the 1080P videos (BD rip) run smoothly, no lag at all.

  • +1

This is an awesome deal if you ask me. Everything about the unit is great. Only the CPU could be better. Maybe an i3 or an i5 with every other spec as stated above and I would have bought it. But yeah, throwing in an i3 or i5 would probably make this closer to the 900 mark. So, all things considered, again, great deal.

    • +2

An LED screen and 4GB DDR3 RAM, a 64bit Windows 7 Pro, 1gb dedicated nVidia graphics, Wireless N, HDMI out and half a terabyte of storage.

Everything about the laptop screams sweet… If only the processor read Core i3 or Core i5 instead of Core 2 Duo, this deal would've gotten over a 100 votes easy. The specs are really sweet otherwise.

      • Yeah…I totally agree, although I still voted hot… Very nice price with the free shipping code. Anyone knows any similar offer with the specs of this laptop but with a Core i5 processor (or better) and at a decent price? Please point me the way! :)

        • Yup

    • +11

No it's that attitude of yours that is BS. You snooze you lose buddy.

EDIT: It's not even sold out yet. WTF are you talking about?

Going to Canberra tomorrow on family matters, in case anyone is wondering about lack of response.

Will jump online sometime in the next 48.

You've all been wonderful, I feel comfortable being back, I'll be sure to sneak in more OZB codes in future.

    • Great find. +

      • +1

        Not really,

No dedicated Graphic card (that's a biggy for a lot of people)only has Mobile Intel HM55 Express chipset compared to 1GB card on the Asus.
        180GB less HDD space.
        No Bluetooth.
        1/2 the warranty.
        No premium sound.

Things it has over the Asus:
        E-SATA
        Faster CPU

I think the overall performance of the Asus would be much better considering the Lenovo has no dedicated graphics.
I'd like to see the Lenovo run this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG_e7HWxo8A

i missed this by seconds. i put it in my cart and when i got to the page to pay it was no longer available. i've been looking for a new laptop on here for awhile so i really hope more will be available soon. hopefully maybe some end of financial year bargains will come up soon.

  • just wondering, anyone's order has been shipped yet?

The Acer notebook I ordered last time took 3 days to be dispatched, but the navigon GPSs took 7 business days.
I hope they ship them out soon as I don't want to offload my acer notebook to someone and then find out I get refunded for the asus one :/

    • did you buy the acer $549 last month and now want to sell it? do you think this asus can handle street fighter IV ? i have the acer and it cant.

      • In deed I bought the $549 Acer, which has been sitting idly on my desk (covered from dust :P) as I'm still using my other notebook as my main PC. I have never tried any game on the Acer laptop because I know the integrated graphic card is optimized for playing HD videos at best.

I'm not a PC gamer (only PC game I want to play is starcraft 2 atm :] ) so my understandings on the GPUs are very limited, but according to this website:

        Asus's: GT320M (dedicated memory) http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-320M.25099.0.…

        Acer's: GMA 4500M (shared) http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerato…

I think the Asus outperforms the Acer (549$) by far when it comes to gaming, and SF4 shouldn't have any problem running on the Asus (probably at the "Low" settings?). Someone plz correct me if I'm wrong.

BTW, mine was dispatched on may 31, but Auspost's tracking website still shows same status of "Manifest accepted" :/

        • thanks~! i should also buy this ASUS
by the way, how many laptops you have at home and why yo bought asus if you havent use your acer much ?
apart from SF4, the acer is great. no problem playing 1080p movies at all.

          • @CyberMurning: I use my Acer Travelmate as my main PC (the screen doesn't work, battery can't hold charge but works great when connect to an external LCD and power plugged in). I have a small eeePC 901 for better portability or reading ebooks/browsing in bed.

I bought the Acer because I plan to use it mainly for playing HD videos on my TV, but then I decided to use my laptop for photoshop and some CAD programs, with a few PC games to play so I went for the Asus :P (I just needed the extra 2GB RAM and dedicated GPU!)

FYI, I gave away my Asus M6R (Pentium M) to my mom a couple of months ago, it's now over 5 y old and still PROBLEM-FREE, but it's just slow. I quite trust Asus for its quality thus far.

BTW, I got my Asus K50ID yesterday, feels nicer than the Acer one on the outside, and the Asus's screen must be a few times better :P
But does anyone know where to get a detailed manual for it? the included manual booklet has less info than the product's overview features on their website, which is PATHETIC!
EDIT: My bad! There's a huge "emanual" icon on the desktop that I didn't see :/
How do I turn off the the GT320M to save battery power?
            Thx in advance
