First in with a hearty YAAARRRR!!!

That be a booty of fish sticks for just four doubloons! ;)

    • +3

You were first mate, but I'm captain 😀

      • +1

        Aye, aye Captain Feathersword! :)

    • So, the price is low… but so it the % of Fish
in a mix of almost as much coating.

To do right by OzBers, I really wish Woolies, etc.
      would offer a 90+ % fish product.

That 49% of G-d knows what HAS to be contributing
      to Obesity in AU.

Last time I checked, the frozen fish shelves -
in Sweden - was not 90% filled with over-coated
hints of fish, with lotsa deep-fry oil.

10% unknown "other" I accept, but no more.

      My 2.2 cents only.

Does anybody do 90% fish fingers???

Not sure that's even possible, given the nature of the product…and it's worth noting that processed stuff like this obviously shouldn't be a staple, it's a snack/treat only.

  • +1

Made in Australia doesn't necessarily mean it's purely Australian…

    Coles brand - $4 for a kg

Prepared in Australia from imported and local ingredients using wild caught hoki from New Zealand

    Same same

    • need more details, whats the % of fish content

      • Short of going there and taking a pic of the label, god knows.

Where's the Hoki from on the WW product?

        • -2

          Same same

then don't claim its same same unless you are 100% sure its comparable

        • @easternculture:

Well, we don't have all the info on the WW product do we…

          People in glass houses…

        • -1

          @Spackbace:

I did quote the fish content. You didn't.

Where's the Hoki from on the WW product?

        • +5

I guess the fish comes from Pokey, unless you turn it around.

    • +4

Isn't "from New Zealand" a loophole to bring in food from Asia?

      • yes

      • It's a misspelled "From China, complete with all the nasties you'd expect"

  • +6

Just a note that these are just repackaged Birds Eye fish fingers. They're also called Neptune at Coles. They're 51% hoki, same ingredients as the Birds Eye ones, and all from Simplot. Been buying them for a while now!

So same, everyday price of $4/kg @ Coles & Woolworths..

      Cheers :)

      cheers man

On this note is there a thread around referring to origins of some house brand items? Eg I know the Coles tasty block cheese is made by bega, and the yoghurt used to be made by Tamar valley dairy

      • +1

I never knew that about the Coles cheese… Big fans of it in our house :)

        • +1

Won't be made by Bega for much longer. MG have the contract to supply Coles brand cheese from the start of next year.

          @crift85:
          Who or what is MG?

    • How do you know?

They may be the same now but previously Birdseye were made with fish fillets, then they were fish fillets only in the 375g size. Now Birdseye do not mention fillets at all.

So maybe they are all made of hoke mash from all the left over bits from filleting. These type of fish fillets have been cheap for ages.

Now only the Birds Eye Chunky Fish Fingers mention the word fillets. 59%

      • It's pretty easy to put two and two together. I never mentioned anything being fillets either, I don't know where that comparison comes from. Bigger brands producing the same product for home brands isn't uncommon.

        • So you are guessing?

You may be right but as I said, cheap fish fingers made of fish or Hoki mash have been cheap for ages. I bought some once and I did not like them.

Maybe these are better but 51% fish is really not that good.

        • @SamR: I never said they're better than anything else :S If you don't like currently available Birds Eye 1kg pack fish fingers (which aren't fillets) then these won't do anything for you.

    • The Birds Eye premium have 59% hoki and the bread crumbs are wholemeal. You can get for $3/400g when discounted, but all things considered is more expensive than the Coles/WOW $4/1kg

  • +1

At least the fish itself is not from Thailand…

  • Got some Coles ones last week, must be alright got the kids tick of approval

  • +3

    Do you like fish sticks?

  • is it the crumb thats 49% or do they use fillers of something else?

    • Was going to ask the same thing. …… Whats the other 49% made of??

Was going to ask the same thing. …… Whats the other 49% made of??

        L & A

        • 49% Love & Affection is the best kind of tastyness

Here are the I&J ingredients as an example: Hake or hoki fish (54%), water, wheat flour, canola oil, maize flour, tapioca starch, salt, thickeners (guar gum, 1404, gellan gum), wheat starch, sunflower oil, hydrolysed vegetable protein, yeast, flavour, emulsifiers [soy lecithin, 481], acidity regulators (450, sodium bicarbonate, 451, 341), rice flour, spices, natural colour (annatto extracts), ascorbic acid, wheat gluten.

    • +1

      So natural!

    • +3

other than the phosphates and salt it's pretty much grass and dicot seeds, and bacteria

Fish fingers are a bit like meat balls or hamburgers. Made of all the offcuts and leftovers from cutting the meat.
If you want good meat you get a steak.
If you want good fish you get a fresh whole fish…or at least a fresh fillet.

    • But neither a steak or fresh whole fish is convenient as frozen food.

      • But neither a steak or fresh whole fish is convenient as frozen food.

Sure but there are other frozen foods that are better. I used to like fish fingers as a child but I can't bring myself to eat then now knowing what is in them.

      • Unfortunately "quality & healthy" not often go together with "convenient".
        I prefer "quality & healthy".

        • +1

I prefer having the option and flexibility of both choices, and not limiting myself to one or the other.

Guys you need to be realistic, $4 per kg which pays for the cost of manufacturing them, storing them, selling them and making a profit, just don't expect much fish or nutritional value from them.

That's around what you pay for frozen potato chips or wedges and potatoes are cheap and easier to handle with no refrigeration required until after processing so I'd hate to think how they can produce a fish product for the same price with all the additional handling, refrigeration and preperation.

  • C'mon, fish don't have fingers .. :-) .. !!
