Fantastic price but as per your link to Momondo, for an extra $150 you can also fly Etihad which makes the flight (at least one leg) a bit shorter. Not a big fan of Etihad but I would still prefer them over China Southern.

    • Agreed, good find!

    • To go from the east coast of Oz to Europe, geographically speaking it's actually a shorter route to go via China than the Middle East.

      SYD to London via Guangzhou is 9h 45m + 12h 35m = 22h 20m

      Whereas SYD to London via Abu Dhabi is 14h 55m + 7h 55m = 22h 50m.

Not a big difference but I think I would prefer a 12.5 hr flight than a 15 hr one for $150 more.

Of course there are other factors but I am just saying it's a shorter route and the stopover is much closer to half-way.

      • I was looking at the actual trip duration, inbound and outbound. Total travel time is shorter with Etihad. And although I much prefer to break up the trip via a stopover in Asia, Guangzhou isn't ideal.

        • Do you mean including the layover time?

          Because it's much the same coming back… it's 20 h 50 m via Guangzhou (11h 30m + 9h 20m) or 21 h 20 m via Abu Dhabi (7h 20m + 14h).

        • @inherentchoice: Yes, total flight duration includes layovers. Based on OP's example, China Southern's inbound flights incl layover would come to 28h25m at best. That's too long for me if you don't break it up with an overnight stay.

Is this with or without an unscheduled 'stop over' in the middle of the Pacific?
I'd rather pay $150 for a much safer and more comfortable airline like Etihad.

I've done this trip with China Southern multiple times and the stop-overs in China are a pain especially when you have a domestic flight.

The $150 on Etihad is definitely worth it.

Change planes in Guangzhou? My least favourite airport in the world.

Would pay extra not to fly China Southern and transit in Guangzhou.

Transit in any Chinese airport is a huge pain and risk. Totally disorganised, no signage, no staff to help and when you find them they do not want to help and pretend they do not speak english. And other chinese passengers push and try to step in front of you when you try to get informations.
If you have 2 stops in China with a domestic flight in between then you are REALLY asking for troubles…and good luck sorting it out …

  • Not a safe airline

  • Why is guangzhou airport so bad?

  • The airport itself is actually quite good, but signage is poor or inexistent and uncoordinated. Worst thing in my opinion is the totally uninterested and unhelpful attitude of staff. Probably they get paid peanuts…not sure, but it is really a fight to obtain any correct and meaningful information out of them. Never seen anything that bad in any other airport around the world.
