You should be fine because it's just a spend threshold with no reference to whether you're a new customer or not. These AMEX statement credits don't normally make distinctions like that.

I renewed my subscription for $15.44 using my AMEX on the 14th and got $3.09 back!

Damn- I pay for my home delivery subscription annually and aren't due for renewal until February.
People actually pay for content on these sites? Cant you access 99% of the content in incognito/private mode or via syndication in other papers (hint just google the headline).
Not to mention plenty of other sites have good free content - eg guardian/daily mail
