Browsing Skyscanner and found some good fares - reminder that probs best booking these direct through the agent's websites (not clicking through Skyscanner) as there are often better price there (at least through my experience with Zuji). You can also use Cashrewards with many of these (I'll note where). Bestjet and a few others have an ABN so Flight Centre will beat their prices.

Cheaper than IWTF's last deal to these places posted… and on the same days.

Test dates: 20th October to 2nd November all flights are China Southern. Probably some more bargains to be had if you play around with times.

Syd-Osaka ($559.85) - Stopping in Shenzhen (19hr 15 mins) on the way there and Guangzhou (3hr 35 mins) on the way back. Booked through Bestjet which has no Cashrewards but has an ABN for Flight Centre.

Mel-Tokyo Narita ($540.21) - 14 hour 30 layover in Guangzhou on the way there 1 hour 30 layover there on they way back. Booked through Bestjet which has no Cashrewards but has an ABN for Flight Centre.

Syd-Tokyo Narita ($589) - only for the dedicated bargainers. 4hr 25min layover in Shenzhen, 8 hr 20 layover in Dalian on the way there and stops in Dalian and Guangzhou on the way back (3hr and 10hr 15min) . I've never been to either by you may be able to get some shopping done. Booked through Skiddoo which has an ABN (Flight centre $1 beat) or 1.5% on ticket price before GST (better option)

  • Almost in jetstar neighbourhood for specials however im not a fan of the long layovers

    • These are certainly not for everyone. But if you're on a budget you can get a 12 hour holiday in China on top of going to Japan ;)

      • yeah baggage included and meals included makes this a decent bargain

    • I dunno, still a bit off $350 return for Mel - Tokyo.

      • Factor in seat meal baggage and you get this price or close to it.

        • +1

          Fair point, but for someone that couldn't care where they seat and only take a small backpack when travelling. I'd much rather an extra $200 for something else when I arrive.

          As for food, I'll usually just bring an apple onboard or go without.

        • @downhillmtbr: yeah me too my last jetstar flight I paid 4 bucks for a bottle of water like you I'm keen on saving on flights but the previous sale for Japan end of may was around 600 return

  • Do you need a Chinese visa for a layover in China? From memory these aren't cheap.

    • can get a transit visa which from memory is free (72 hours when i did it, but they might have extended this)

      • 72 hours if you transit through one of these airports

        • Beijing via Beijing Capital International Airport,;
        • Shanghai via Shanghai Hongqiao and Pudong International Airport;
        • Guangzhou via Baiyun International Airport,
        • Chengdu via Shuangliu International Airport;
        • Chongqing via Jiangbei International Airport;
        • Shenyang via Taoxian International Airport;
        • Dalian via Zhoushuizi International Airport;
        • Xi'an via Xianyang International Airport.

        So seems you're out of luck with Shenzhen
