          @Rocket6: Hi Rocket. The 2010s are just passive speakers. You will need some form of Amplifier to use them. That can be anything from an old vintage thing you've got laying around or $10 off Gumtree OR you can go out and blow as much as you want to and get something brand new.

          What purpose does the amp serve?

          @Rocket6: Is there anything wrong with the $300 sound bar? Audio is very subjective so although getting a pair of bookshelf speakers will absolutely give you a far better soundstage through proper separation I'm not sure how much 'better' YOU would consider it to be. Just concerned you may end up spending a a few hundred to only get a small improvement… unless you really hate the Soundbar or want to build up a dedicated 2-ch system purely for audio pleasure?!

          A VERY basic explanation… an amplifier 'amplifies' the sound waves from around about headphone level (aka: line level) up to speaker level. Speakers need to move more to make more sound so they need more 'power'. An Amplifier provides that power.

          There is nothing wrong with the soundbar. My comparison was more to get an idea of what its capabilities are :)

          I am very much thinking of grabbing one and plugging it in to my PC. Looks like it'll play music with an amp (which I now understand :D) very well.

          @Rocket6: You can buy small, cheap low-powered (10-15W per channel) digital Amps these days for around the $50 mark that would be perfect for near-field PC audio. Would easily fill a small room with decent sound but you'll need to step up the power output if you want to fill a larger room or frequently crank up for parties etc. You might also find that adding a small inexpensive SubWoofer gives you the overall sound you desire.

          $35 - These are the most generic ones available. I've never liked their cheap & tacky looks but they are real TriPath Amps

          $55 - These are a big step up and contain higher grade components plus are finished off a lot better than the one above. Note that this requires a Power Supply which will cost you another $15-$20. These used to sell for aorund the $40 mark with Power Supply so I'm not sure what's going on.

          $57 - Nicer again as it has proper Speaker Terminals on the rear but again you'll need to buy a Power Supply to suit (add $15-$20)

          The sky's the limit from there. You can spend up to about $300 on one of these small digital Amps but they're all basically the same. The most expensive ones are either higher power or offer USB DAC or Bluetooth etc.

          @Rocket6: I run a pair of bookshelves in my living room with a small half size amplifier. Very happy with the setup, much better than a soundbar.
          The amplifier is needed to receive the audio signal from the TV (or in my case a computer running STAN/Netflix) and pass it through to the speakers. Your soundbar does this internally.

          You then control the volume on the Amplifier. Most TVs have a digital sound out on them.
          TV (+other sound sources) > Amplifier > Speakers

          Cheers, got a pair of Tangent Evos. Will run them up with my Volls and do a teardown comparison too :)

          Needed a pair of small bookshelfs to build into a new project but on a very tight budget so didn't want to pay the extra for the 2010s. Didn't want to sacrifice and of my lovely vintage Minimus 7s either so I hope these are similar performers.

      Oooh, those would have matched the 2000C centre better than the graphite 2010's I purchased last night. Hopefully they still look good together. We all know how important WAF (wife appreciation factor) is to building and maintaining harmony in the home while enjoying our 'toys' ;)

      Edit - this comment was in reference to the 2010's - gloss black that popped up briefly today in the mix! Didn't realise my comment would pop up so far from the reps post.

      Does the floor stock come with the original package, I was really after a set of this yesterday but wasn't given such an option so ended up paired the A250+A225C with a Q 2010. Is that too late to make the change to buy this full Boston set instead? Please!!!

      I placed my order at: 2 June 2016 7:03:32 PM for an A225c single centre speaker, however was refunded on the 13th June saying that the order could not be fulfilled, yet two days after my order was placed it is advertised to someone else. I kind of feel a bit cheated here
