Note: There's been quite some bad experiences with the latest Sonos App, but so far they're okay for my use cases and I like their sound signature. I think they're decent deals for smart wifi speakers and also allow support for home surround sound setup next time.

note: this is a repost; didn't realise we can no longer post amazon affliates, sorry for that!
cheers

  • how good is the bass on this? especially at low volumes?

    • The bass are good. Sonos speakers are good but they are relatively expensive.

    • I have only heard in stores, definitely good to fill the space. The Era300 also has spatial audio and it does remarkably well.

Personally I only have the Sonos Ikea Frame speakers, and to be honest, I'm very impressed by it already (it is similar to Sonos OneSL) - it can go really loud and still not distort.

and yes, the bass response is good, not too bassy but clear thumpy attacks if that's your jam.

"Era 300 also on sale $399"
    I wish, it's actually $599 FYI.

    • Yep. Rushed to click to by 2.. then found out it is $599. Still good price.

      • haha sorry for the false positive

    • Yeah, I was about to say realllly!!!

But OP is right about the latest Sonos App. They caused problems when I updated my router to the latest FW. Sonos needs to do a lot more for the price they are charging. I find on a number of occasions, their technical service assistants aren't much help and you have to wait 90 minutes or more on hold.

      • do you mind sharing abit more on what exactly you've been facing? are the speakers essentially unusable after the update? :'(

        • If you see on reddit thats what is happening to a lot of people; I personally don't have an issue and am also curious as to why so many are experiencing so much problems with the new app.

          • @RaihaX: Basically reduced functionality while looking more polished (Sonos promising to bring functionality back over time ~ with a very lame sorry not sorry from the ceo). It was 100% wrong call to push out the forced update on an unfinished app.
That being said, the issues are being over exaggerated. It still works fine for 95% of people but for the 5% it is a nightmare. Sonos are notorious for ignoring that 5%, I had issues when I bought my Arc and getting Dolby atmos from a new Samsung tv through eArc was a nightmare, countless pages by other owners about the issue over their message boards and nothing substantial from Sonos for about 12 months (except blaming Samsung for the issue and “submit error logs and we’ll look into it”).
Anyway rant over, speaker hardware is top notch although expensive (only worth it when on sale). I would avoid roam and move gen 1 based off battery performance issues, jury is out on gen 2.
I rarely use the app except for tuning the speakers or for putting the system into quiet mode (night time less bass) or speech enhancement. Don’t need to use the app beyond initial system setup to operate tv or to stream music directly through Spotify (or other)

@Rkel403: Yeah i got the missing features bit that was lost due to the app transition but I read people having issue with their speakers losing connection, no longer on their account etc which sounds really full on!

But yes I am like you I dont use the app beside checking the codec the audio is playing at, trueplay and initial setup. The rest is with Spotify, Airplay or HASS (if I want spatial music through AM).

        • The front, the rears and the sub got disconnected without obvious signs because the app says they are still working together. Only after watching numerous movies that I finally able to determine only the soundbar was working, LOL. And trying to connect them together again was a nightmare. Whilst the sub is still unusable at least I managed to get the soundbar and the rears to work.

And on top, the App is no longer user-friendly despite looking better. And Sonos trying to make excuses by saying the new app was meant to bring Sonos into the future, lololol….

          RaihaX, you're spot on.

          • @craving: Yeah i wanted to trueplay my setup as i moved my sofa a bit but im too scared on things going wrong - is like a house of cards right now and any small changes could result in it crumbling into pieces…..

Was about to buy a pair myself. Got severely dissapointed 🤣🤣

    • oh whoops, im so sorry for the false positive! Typo indeed, just updated that!

    • shame hey, we have a pair of era 300's wall mounted in our living room for music and they sound bloody awesome.

I'd get a 2nd pair for somewhere else in the house if they were $399!

  • For the purposes of home surround sound setup (I have the Sonos ARC sub and the bar already) which one is a better option?

  • Can I stream music from Spotify on an Android to the speakers or am I forced to use their app?

    • +1

Quick google says it can actually be setup with Android (I thought only iOS!), but from my usage with Ikea's Sonos Frame, the best part is the Airplay feature which is only available through apple devices. So I can use any music/video app or even safari app, and share it through airplay.

but otherwise, yes the Sonos app (and desktop) connects into pretty much most radio and streaming devices out there - I use youtube music and spotify.

Yes, you can cast from the Android Spotify app using Spotify connect. Its seamless

      • Daily usage, yes - you can cast from Spotify.
However, You need to use their app to setup your system I.e connect the speakers to your wifi and pair your combination of speakers into rooms etc.

Points to note -TruePlay is only available on iOS, this is used during setup to “tune” your speakers to your environment, essentially is steps you through walking around your room using the microphone on your phone to pickup noises emitted by the speakers to map the space and then tune the speakers to that environment - it does make a difference to sound quality IMO.
I have seen responses from Sonos tech support suggesting “borrow a friends iPhone to tune the system” which is absurd.
Anyway, should not really change your daily usage of the device but with being aware before hand.
