  • Should i get this computer or something off gumtree thats a couple of years old (maybe an i5 4200U + 8gb ram)? about the same price

    any advice?

It's just for general browsing, newsgroups and playing really old retro games (like GOG)

    • For playing games the i5-4200u will handle things better. I know the N3700 is actually no slouch in the graphics department, but the i5 has more headroom.

Nowadays though, on the Dell Outlet, a Dell Inspiron for $600 ish will have a discrete GPU. A low end one, but better than integrated.

I got one. It's for my daughter at school. She has a 15" but she complains it's too heavy. If you go into any retailer such as HN or JB you won't find anything that compares to this price. Mostly anything under $500 is a Dual Core with 32Gb SSD - who can get by with 32Gb HD!!!??
It even has Dual Band wireless, which is rare in low budget devices.
Sure it won't play any of the latest Steam games, but for schoolwork and portability it's a pretty good deal.
Dell currently have it on their website for $499 but you can choose the colours and specs, here you are limited to the one configuration.

  • Dell recently announced the new model 3168 2 in 1 systems in this range, about 2-3 days ago and starting sale in the USA and China about now.

Not seen any release date for Australia though where only the older 3147 2 in 1 units are listed still.

  • Hi, can anyone help? I'm really clueless with computers and the specs mean nothing to me! Which is better between this and the HP listed here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/250834
I'm just after a cheap laptop for browsing the internet and doing some college work. We currently have a HP but it's gotten really slow in a short period of time and the battery is dead so it only works when plugged in. Any advice would be appreciated!

This laptop is MILES better than the HP in every way, since it has a much better processor, more ram, and a SSD. Everything will run much faster with this quad-core processor compared to the HP's old celeron processor, 4GB ram means youll be able to have more programs running at the same time, and the SSD means that your files will open faster, and your computer will boot in seconds.

      • Thanks!

      • Don't forget that this device has Dual Band 5G Wifi capability (AC) instead of the outdated Wireless N on offer from the HP.

  • I was thinking about getting this laptop for my Mum. Her eyesight isn't the best and whilst this computer is nice and cheap and all, I'm a bit worried the screen is a bit small and not that great.

If I spend a bit more money, is this machine a decent deal.

    15.6-inch HD (1366 x 768) Truelife LED-Backlit. With the 20% off, it would come to $599.

I worry that no one has posted this as an individual bargain (unlike this Inspiron 11) so would I be too much of a jive turkey if I bought this one instead?

    Cheers,
    James

Sorry saw it when you posted, was busy and forgot to reply.

The dell you linked is decent for the price :)

Thoguh if you are willing to spend a extra, I'd recommend getting the lenovo yoga in this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/251204

It has a FHD 1920x1080 screen opposed to a 1366x768, so the higher resolution will look nicer even though the screen is smaller. It also has a SSD and touchscreen, so will will be much better to use and make a great buy for an extra $200

Thanks Lyl. I'm thinking your probably right, but pin was pulled last night ;-(
I'll replace HDD with SSD for my dear old Mum and hope that will suffice.

        Cheers,
        James

  • Anyone bought one of these? Does it have an ethernet port?
