Aldi was selling the bike panniers (without design but who cares) for around $30-35 and they are from Germany too so if you're lucky, you might still find them somewhere.

      Thanks for your suggestion.

In my personal capacity as an ozbargainer, I guess the quality of Aldi cannot be compared with Ortlieb for a number of reasons, mainly the waterproof ability (IP64 vs Aldi's water resistant, not -proof) and the local 5 year warranty. Aldi's may come from Germany but I highly doubt that they are made in Germany with the famous German's quality. The Ortlieb is the good ones to invest in, kind of the set and forget panniers as they last for a really long time and can be used under any weather conditions while with the Aldi's you may need to purchase a new one soon and have to keep looking out for the rain.

In my capacity as a store rep, I can appreciate that the price difference is quite an amount but I guess once you go for Ortlieb, you will never look back again and for the Ortlieb Back Roller Design, our price is the best one . If anyone has used either of them, please share your experience.

    • I went to Aldi to have a look at the bags - I saw a few models there.
They didn't sell well at my local, but that was for a reason - they aren't very good quality.
As usual, the special buys at Aldi are either hit or miss.
In this case, they looked like a miss.
Don't get me wrong, I like (and use) Aldi bike shorts (but I went to buy the next time around and they were crap and didnt fit)
      YMMV.

@Zippy7 your comment is unfair because you should compare the two different products with the price, and there is a huge difference.
Ortlieb has its brand image and quality but I'm a kind of buyer (like many others) who is happy with Aldi panniers' value for the price (I didn't buy them simply because I don't need) and who cares if they aren't 100% waterproof certified because I would use silicone spray the same which is used for the camping tends and I make a big favor to my pocket.

They didn't sell well near your location it doesn't compare with quality, instead they sold very very well to my location (and others) and Aldi run out of stock, this is Aldi and any of its branches have different clients, you might buy a $175 pannier while other people will prefer to save money because they need to buy food for they children.

My first comment was to give a cheap alternative to ozbargainers NOT to make a competition with Ortlieb products.

Regarding your shorts, who cares we are talking about bike panniers.

        • Actually, it is your comparison comment about the Aldi panniers that is not fair because it is highly unlikely you can buy them at your local today. Sure, you can wait 6months+ for the next time they come around.

For the person who wants panniers today, then they will go to their local Aldi to find they cannot buy them.

I stand by what I said before. Aldi make absolute CRAP as well as hidden bargains.

        • @Zippy7:
"Aldi make absolute CRAP as well as hidden bargains" That is your personal opinion, what I can see is that all Aldi branches are "always" full of buyers and they look very happy to make good bargains.

    • It's possible to buy other (non Aldi) panniers for ~$37, but how is that relevant? It's also possible to make panniers out of some cheap bags, and add plastic bags as covers and that will be cheaper but how is that relevant?

The price for this product is good.

I like your deal. It is the lowest price ever.

I am still too unfit (since last thread) to warrant buying though :(
