  • Doesn't support 60Hz I reckon?

      • +1

        Manual claims otherwise :) http://www.bauhn.com.au/literature_149918/ATVS58-1115-_Instruction_Manual

EDIT - Hmmm that link is dead when you paste it for some reason. Google 'Bauhn 58 4k 60hz' and click the link that says PDF, then 'Ctrl F' for 60Hz and you'll see the specs.

Thanks deanyev - See Page 55 of Manual:

        • @rawm: That does say 55" though… I mean it's not a small leap to assume the specs are the same, but it's an assumption all the same.

    • its a newer version so may do?

The manual claims 60Hz and HDMI 2.0.

        This should work.

    • Have any channels started broadcasting 60hz yet. If not I may get this because I only watch free to air and need to upgrade my 32"

      • Fta looks terrible on these tvs

      • This being Australia, with 50Hz mains voltage, we broadcast at 50Hz. Americans with 60Hz mains broadcast at 60Hz.

If you broadcast at a different frequency to your mains, mains interference looks much worse, as it will continuously scroll up or down, instead of staying at the same location on the screen. This is much less of a problem now that we have gone digital and CRT TVs have gone extinct, but it's still a problem.

Whilst not specifically referring to this deal I don't get why some people are spending serious money on 4K TVs. This article is worth a read before you part with your hard-earned cash.

    http://www.cnet.com/au/news/why-ultra-hd-4k-tvs-are-still-st…

For my money, I'll wait for OLED a few years away. I'm pretty happy with my plasma screen ATM.

    • +15

Although I partially agree with you that article is 3 years old, did you read his update at bottom, from Nov 2015:

A lot has changed in the nearly three years since I first wrote this article. Prices have fallen, new technologies have come out, and there's more (though still not a lot) of 4K content. Today, the best TVs on the market have local dimming, HDR, and Wide Color Gamut… and they also happen to be 4K. Even the best mid-range televisions are 4K. So at this point, if you want a TV that looks good in general, it's going to have Ultra HD resolution (with some exceptions).

So for all to behold, 4K TVs are no longer stupid, and here's why (i.e. read that article first before you comment). http://www.cnet.com/news/4k-tvs-arent-stupid-anymore/

        • +3

the majority of new tvs are now 4k

        • -1

          @ubcool:
That's great for someone wanting to replace a TV that has broken down. However, it's waste of money to pay top dollars for a 4K TV to replace a fully functional high spec FHD set. It's a marketing hype.

    • OLED, drool…. I'd swap my 1080p plasma for a 720p OLED I think…. Hmmmm, black levels… Local dimming no good for gaming.

  • This is the TV of the future. It has over 1 billion display colours and the RRP$30,000.

      $30K TV …. and probably 1 Year warranty :-)

      • +1

I would expect the ACL would cover this for about 100 years at that price ;-)

        • "Extended Warranty!!!"

Going by a $30K TV, the extended warranty will be about $4.5K LOL

Will the extended warranty cover you if something goes wrong?? … hmmm

  • +5

I've had the 65" version since posting the original deal. Great TV when hooked up to a HD or UHD input but relatively crap for FTA TV relying on the pathetic remote. Feel free to AMA.

    • Assuming it has them, what are the built in media player capabilities like? Can / does it play 4K content over wifi/lan?

      • +1

Let's put it this way, don't buy this TV hoping to rely on any of the native software or remote functions. 4K will only work using HDMI 2.0 from an external media centre. Having said that I think even the $2,000 low end Korean brand 4k TVs would struggle to hardware decode 4K using onboard hardware/software (especially if you are using HEVC codecs which most of us need to without the NBN).

        • Thanks, was thinking of getting one to try out and return if not suitable, you've saved me the hassle :)

I've bought an LG webOS 3.0 TV for the loungeroom, after something cheaper for a bedroom but it's got to have similar media playback abilities which isn't looking good. Will probably spring for another LG the next round of sales or ebay percentage off or whatever happens next.

The LG so far has been great, has played everything I've thrown at it except 2 files - one was a years old 4K .ts file (would probably work in an mkv container, yet to try) and the only other thing so far it hasn't liked was the TrueHD audio in a jellyfish demo file.

        • @foobar: look into Amazon fire or nvidia shield for media playback.

      • Can / does it play 4K content over wifi/lan?

It wouldn't matter if it could decode it, you wouldn't be able to get a decent bitrate over WiFi irrespective of how good your player was.

It's hard enough to get 1080p over WiFi at any reasonable bitrate. without stuttering.

        • Surprisingly the LG TV does well over wifi, 1080p 264 no problems so far and HEVC 2160p also. I haven't tried a higher bitrate 264 file yet (sensible bitrate, not crazy like the jellyfish files), will do so today.

The 90+ mbit jellyfish stutter but all play perfectly from USB (checked up to 250mbit). Not sure what speed the LAN port is yet, suspect it's probably only 100mbit and if it is, then it's not going to be much if any improvement over the wifi which is ac, but not sure what speeds it's actually connecting at or maintaining.

        • @foobar: you might not even notice its doing 1080i?

    • A friend bought the 45" version about 4 weeks ago and the tuner is quite blurry. Some people say it's slow changing channels but it didn't seem that bad.

    • Have you tried changing remotes to a harmony and has it improved the usability if so?

      • Haven't tried that no but thanks for the tip. I use it mainly for watching 4k movies from a media centre so the remote doesn't get used that much.

it is better to get TCL 55U55E5800FS @998 from 2nds world. they advertise as 100Hz but it is actually 200Hz and under $1000

    • I got the 58" 3d tcl from costco for around $1300 (because me and the family still like 3d movies and photos). The picture quality is surprisingly good and the smart interface is quite snappy. Downside is 4k 30hz despite being hdmi2 and lots of Chinese native apps linking to Chinese content. I generally use a pc though rather than the smart interface. Photos look awesome at 4k.

Terrible input lag don't bother playing games on it.

    • +7

That's all I needed to know. Thanks mate!

    waiting for aldi oled tv.

    • LOL. Aldi isn't rich enough to buy the technology of LG or not really into TVs as much. LG has it all (OLED technology) and LG will be selling it to the large corporations this year including Panasonic, Sony, etc. Samsung OLED technology is too dear atm and that's the reason Samsung stopped producing OLED tvs. That's what I heard from a tech guy at Harvey. And it looks like truth bcuz there are OLED LGs only in shops.

      • +1

Aldi isn't rich enough. Hehe. They are a private company you know

      • What I heard was Samsung had strict quality control for their OLED TV'S which lead to low yield (so they stopped manufacturing), while LG were more lenient on what made it to the market. Some people compared LG OLED TV'S and found that the quality of image to be similar to that of the Samsung SUHD, meaning it's a bit silly to spend more for OLED (not yet matured technology) at this point in time.

        • +1

The thing about Samsungs OLED technology was the main driver, the blue LED. This caused the life of the panel to decrease when used on larger screens, hence why Samsung only use OLED technology on their phones. LG OLED uses a white LED driver and therefore they were successful in creating an OLED that lasts as long as an normal LED/LCD TV. Samsungs SUHD range also have pretty bad light bleed on their panels as found on every LED/LCD TV on the market, including LG. OLEDs have no backlighting and therefore there is no light bleed, however the price is pretty high..

        • +1

@Naddy: They could always start production of plasmas again and solve the problem, but no one was buying them! I am a cheapskate and never thought if getting a decent plasma, but when one landed in my lap at a DS sale I have to say it would be sad if I had to go back

      • +2

LOL. Aldi isn't rich enough to buy the technology of LG

i'm sure the family have a few coins to spare.

        Revenue Increase €53 billion (2010)[3]

        1 Euro equals
        1330.72 South Korean Won

aldi's revenue as a private company is mind-blowing.

        • +1

Yeah it has nothing to do with that, it's not their core business.

        • @Jackson:

And FAR more importantly, they don't manufacture ANY of their TVs.

      • I think aldi could sell more technologically advanced tvs if they wished to. But they are not here to sell $3000 tvs.

  • Nice find OP think there's a number of deals with no name brands

  • Aldi could definitely enter the TV market properly by acquiring another company or doing a joint venture with a proper TV maker to lift their TV offerings. Real sad they haven't done it yet as it'd be amazing to see good TVs with Aldi's pricing approach.

    • Because TV manufacturers seem to be making so much money these days.

I like their way of letting others take the low margin flogging.

  • Got a 55" LG LCD LED (not 4K) a few months ago (2nd hand, a few years old) and looking at getting something else as very dark scenes are just rubbish.. I had a 10 year old 50" Conia which had better blacks (although to be fair, it was plasma).

So… in short, can anyone comment on picture quality inc how it goes for dark scenes?

  • -8

    What's the rrp?
How much discount am I getting?

  • -1

Bauhn tvs are rubbish. Sound quality is shocking, smart functions are terribly designed and problematic, doesn't connect easily to sound systems. Consider spending your money elsewhere.

    • +5

Sound sucks on most tvs, smart functions even on my top of the range Panasonic from 2013 are out of date and so best left for external devices, if the image is fine and the price is right then a lot of people will be happy to go for it.

  • +2

Does anyone know what panels these Braun TVs use?

    • The cheapest possible

      • Well I assumed that much but I thought someone might know specifics. Like if they are specific re-brands or something.

    • +4

razor sharp panels cut from the finest steel

  • It's a bit risky to spend $899 on a Braun TV, but you can always return it after 59 days. I don't think I'll ever buy TV from ALDI no matter how cheap they are.

    • +2

I don't think I'll ever buy TV from ALDI no matter how cheap they are.

You miss out on some gems. Like most Aldi gear, they are just rebrands of models that can be found elsewhere… not always "no-name" either.

      • +1

The trick is being able to tell the difference. Or just taking a chance.

        • +1

The 60 day return policy sorts that out as long as you remember to take stuff back, and the others in your family let you

  • +4

I bought a 55" Bauhn 4K a few weeks back. On free to air the picture is absolutely terrible, almost unwatchable. Fed 4K content from a PC it is merely bad. As a monitor it is not good either. Don't waste the petrol buying then returning this, get ANYTHING instead from LG, Samsung, Sony hell even TCL!

  • +1

Stay away from Bauhn. They are only supported during warranty period. No parts or service for them whatsoever. Throw away TV.

  • Pretty sure someone told a story of their bauhn tv falling off its stand and almost crushing their child, in a previous deal? It's not the first Aldi device I've heard of to fall apart. Think I'm staying away from expensive Aldi tech

  • I would be interested in anyone's experience on watching Blu-rays or other hdmi-feed content. On my LG 55" 4K the picture is really beautiful on things like Avatar (2D). No problems at all.

  • Stay away from Aldi/Bauhn. Support OK during warranty, nil support after that.

  • Got it, picture seems nice enough. Has motion smoothing which can't be turned off though, which (I'm guessing) contributes to the fairly significant input lag.

    • +1

Thats the annoying issue with cheap TVs. Less options to control their image processing. I guess they are cheaper/lazier when it comes to developing the interface.

  • Does anyone know anymore stores in Sydney with the item?

    • There's a tonne in Aldi Chullora. I was browsing around for reviews and saw this lol
