SwannOne Zen Thermostat $99 @ Officeworks Online

40

Been looking at a smart thermostat to control my heating remotely now that the days are getting cooler.
Was priced @ $129

NOTE: 14-22 business days before dispatch (doesn't look like they keep them in stock)
Not 100% sure but may require a Smarthub to operate

The SwannOne Zen Thermostat allows you to remotely control your home heating and cooling requirements to optimise your energy use. You can use it in conjunction with your exiting SwannOne setup and enjoy alerts or status updates on your smartphone when it's paired with the SwannOne Smart Hub.
The thermostat helps to optimise your energy use by allowing you to remotely control your heating or cooling requirements.
It's easy to install thanks to the screwless wiring terminals and battery power.
It is powered via 4 AA batteries which have an estimated battery life of 2 years with typical operation.
You can control cooling, heating, emergency and automatic modes.

Anyone who might have can confirm whether it is functional without the smarthub? Doesn't seem to be much info on this unit

      under the features section of the website (http://www.swannone.com/aus/swannone-zen-thermostat);

      Requires Smart Hub

This product requires the SwannOne Smart Hub to function

Swann will tell you it needs the Smart Hub. However it operates stand alone (http://zenthermostat.com/install/faq.php - Basic Navigation) through the touch interface on the unit itself - although I doubt you are able to do the fancier things like put in schedules. You would however be able to turn the heater on/off and change the temperature. The big advantage would be if you plug in a home automation system - yes that could be the Swann thing, or it could be one of a number of systems that support ZigBee (https://zensmartdevices.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/208691… http://www.smarthomedb.com/product/zen-thermostat/faq/p823/d…).

I have one of these, I bought it back when it was an Indegogo campaign. It shipped with the Smartthings hub - this was before the Zen Thermostat was bought by Swann and SmartThings was bought by Samsung (how things change so quickly).

I can confirm it'll work stand-alone. I had it running this way for 3 months before getting the hub up and running. I can't speak for the Swann Hub, but my SmartThings hub allows me, via the app to control schedules and remote control (from my iPhone) whether to turn the heater on and off, and it will report the temperature of the room.

  • I think this is because Officework pricematched the Swannone official website's price..

    • Just noticed that - looks to be the case.

heh. Just checked compatibility of all brands. "UNFORTUNATELY YOUR SYSTEM IS NOT COMPATIBLE" - makes it kind of useless?

    • I just did this… WTF… You click Australia and then select the brand of your system. All of the brands say "Unfortunately your system in not compatible" and then the "Other" option says with a green banner and a big tick "Compatible with most systems!"

I looked at this thing a while back. At the time the web site was pretty useless, and does not seem like it's improved. On deeper checking I think it could work with most 'dumb' heaters - in other words if you have one of those old rotary dials on the wall, or a box with a little lever underneath. If you have something like my system - which is a Brivis that has a 'networker' control - then you are well and truly out of luck. To do that you need to get a separate controller to plug onto the heater that basically provides the 'dumb' switch on/off ability. Info on wiring including links to videos are here: http://zenthermostat.com/install/support.php

On the bright side it is a Zigbee device so in theory you should be able to control it with anything that supports that…. eg the SmartThings kit when that finally gets here. (https://support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/204356564-…)

      • Yes, I have it running with an older Brivis 'dumb' heater - I think it has two wires and used to be attached to one of those slider switches on the wall.

  • What is this thing? Is it just another RF over internet device or can it be connected directly wired to a heater?

  • Has anyone received one? Were you able to fit it? reviews? much appreciated!

    • No idea - am curious as well how it is as a standalone.
