  • I was at the Total Expo today in Melbourne. You can get a free pass. Inside there are 2 exhibitors offering free barista made coffee, 2 places giving out ice cream (Rackspace + Webloyalty), and then the usual free sweets, popcorn, pens, etc for the rest.

EDIT: It's on tomorrow as well

    • Hey, you think that's good? I got upgraded to a full delegate package, valued at $2000. So I also got to hear some extra talks, and free lunch and drinks at the end of the day :D

      • Me too! They called me up a couple of weeks ago. Lunch and extra speakers were pretty good but not worth the $2000 price tag.

        • True that. But hey, free is free. I heard the startup booths only cost $500 to have a stand there. If I had known it was that cheap I would have got one as well! Next year for sure.

  • +1

    Only gives me $20?

    • yes this!
      WHY!!!!!!??? (in a dramatic way)

edit: i guess when you use referral…

    • +1 but good [in Sydney, altho I reg'd fr SA] 'til Dec 2016…?

  • Is there really that many people who haven't signed up but still are open to?

    • Can't you just delete the appdata on your phone, use a disposeable address and become a new customer again?

      • +3

nup. they track your imei, phone number and email. You would need new versions of all 3 to sign up again

        • heh.

        • You sure they track imei? I signed up for another account the other day.

        • @deanylev: They won't let you sign-up anymore after a couple of accounts

        • If they track IMEI, they don't do a very good job of it. I've used several of these vouchers so far and each time have set up a new account with a throwaway e-mail, fake phone number and a different credit card. All on the same phone, and it's worked every time.

        • @Tr0jan: how many times have you used it successfully i have done it 4 times but it dosntwork anymore

      • +1

They cancel any duplicate accounts automatically

  • I redeemed a free $40 first ride code ages ago and haven't used it yet but when I went to put this code in it says First time code already redeemed Have I lost my first time free ride without using it or does my $40 from ages ago still count?

    • +1

Six months ago, I tried to claim a free ride, but something in their system screwed up and I couldn't get the code to redeem for the life of me. It just kept erroring out.

So I didn't bother, deleted the app, and took the train.

Then, a month later there was another "free ride" promotion, so I tried again. However, it insisted I'd already redeemed a first time code.

I decided to use Uber anyway, since I assumed that meant the earlier code must be on my account. Nope. It was full price.

So, if you've even tried to redeem a code before, chances are this won't work, and your earlier code is void. Also, since they tie your account to multiple factors (phone/sim/email), you can't just just create a new account.

      • I thank you… & the Climate thanks you… ;-)

  • How do I delete my account and make a new one?

    • Can't delete your account, but if you have another phone number of a relative or friend who doesn't have an account, you can sign up for another one and verify using their number.

  • Guys, I've never used uber before… Is it safe? Is there any way you can get scammed?

    • +3

I've used Uber a fair bit and can say it's awesome. Haven't used a cab in a long, long time now. You're a hell of a lot more likely to get scammed in a taxi (you know the famous rummaging around for change for 5 minutes till you give up and just say not to worry about it, or being charged an extra 10% for paying with card). Order the Uber, see the car, licence plate, name of the driver (with a picture) and can contact them or they can contact you (they also now hide your real number when you call them and vice versa) and when the trip is over, your credit card or Paypal is deducted without having to worry about cash. You then get an email receipt basically straight away and can rate your driver.

Uber gave the taxi industry the kick they badly have needed for years, pity the industry has just tried to get it banned as opposed to actually lifting their game. If I can avoid it, I won't be catching a taxi again.

      • Woah that sounds really good! Thanks for your in depth reply. I'll give them a go then =)

    • Pretty safe but had a creepy driver once. It's fun to use!

      • What happened? I'm interested to hear it

        • +1

He was a bit like ryan gosling in drive, without the looks and odd charm

  • Anyone know how long this free ride can be held onto for, before using it?

    • Just used code on my app and expiry shows as 31 Dec 2016

  • im just wondering,
do uber drivers still get paid if you use a free first ride?

    • yes, drivers get paid the regular amount your ride would have been.. uber picks up the costs as a part of the free ride offer (in hoping you'll make more rides and pay real $'s)

  • It says Sydney under the promo code for mine. Haven't used these codes before, so is it only for sydney area in this case?

    • +2

Looks like it as I just used Uber in Perth and it didn't come off. Didn't bother me as Uber was cheaper than a taxi anyway!

    • -1

Same with me Sydney only and it only gave me $20. When asked uber to change it I got a f**k off reply: If the code is only valid in Sydney, then unfortunately we can't adjust this. Please head to t.uber.com/contact for more information.
      Very bad

  • I just used the referral link to sign up and now cannot stack the ops offer :/

    • was just about to ask that, don't think referral code and new user codes stack

  • RIP taxi industry!

    • nope. In regulated and mature Uber markets (e.g. San Francisco) Uber is just one of many options of transport. No shortage of Taxis in SF and they don't look like they are going away any time soon. Uber does not offer hail by the side of the road, nor waiting in a rank, taxis do, and some people like that.

Choose your own method of transport. BTW, in Qld, Uber is now "probably" illegal thanks to recent legislation changes, and so you may well find in a crash you can't rely on the CTP or Driver's insurance (they will likely be denied by the insurer) and you would probably have to sue the driver personally for any injury costs you incur.

Despite this, I still use Uber regularly in Brisbane and think it's mostly a better option than many cabs.

    • Hey have some heart! There may be taxi drivers reading this - they too are Oz Bargainers! I have not ventured UBER but looks like I will try. I pay too much to cabs to take me to airport, from my place over $120.

  • Should title be changed to Sydney since the code seems to be for Sydney? Also is it only $20 off first ride?

    • Total Expo was in Melbourne. Maybe its less for non-Melbourne locations?

  • Valid where? Should be in title

  • +1

It worked in Brisbane, although I had to contact them as the promotion code didn't automatically trigger the discount. Uber fixed it up manually.

  • Mine says Sydney, $20.
    I am in Canberra, however.

  • Didn't work in Brisbane automatically, I will make a call to them tomorrow.

  • hey guys,
i just sent an email to uber re: the confusion about whether it should be $20 or $25, as I received a $20 discount
if you write them an email with the link to this twitter post as evidence they should refund the remainder ($5)
    You're welcome :)
