What Watch Do You Wear?

Watches have a unique status as a Veblen good, and basically the only piece of jewellery that society will allow a man to wear.

Watches can be worn as a show of status or wealth, a show of fashion sense, or they can be worn to show the time.

As a community of dirty misers and professional bargain hunters I'm interested to know what watches we wear, and why?

Please state

  • Watches owned

  • How much did you pay and was it from Ozbargain?
  • Age

I think this will be very interesting to see.

Cheers friends.

        • Lucky you! Have you checked the price out recently? I bought mine right before the major hike last year (probably because of exchange rate and other things).

Yea, I got the feeling that the customer service would be right up there.

It seems a much better company than the overrated swiss watch brands that all come out from ETA anyway.

  • I prefer a digital watch. Recently upgraded to a fitness watch 2 months back. Using Garmin Vivosmart HR now and I like it.
Only drawback is that I have to charge it once in 5 days and it doesn't show seconds.
I was concerned it will feel bulky on my wrist but I don't notice it at all.

Nice collection! Post pics? What Daytona is it? I love the panda dial :) Is the Speedy the sapphire sandwich, or the more classical hesalite crystal?

      • — What Daytona is it?
SS, black dial. Got a bit excited seeing the ceramic bezel at baselworld though…

        — Is the Speedy the sapphire sandwich, or the more classical hesalite crystal?
Just the reduced version unfortunately. Thought about upgrading to the proper moonwatch — but then realised I've probably got a few too many in the collection..

        • That is a sizeable collection. :D

What do you think about the Speedy meteorite watch?

        • +2

          @gearhead:

I find the DSOM more interesting, but ultimately it comes down to whether the watch sings to you.

Personally I'd prefer the closest thing to the original moonwatch (lemania 321), but the best you can do nowadays is find the old 3570.50 model using the 1861 movement (not the newer version they've released recently)

        Hi Mr Abbott
well, it depends on how you look at it.
some may prefer the traditional standard to wear a gen's watch( like the quite small one)
i prefer the watch just cover my wrist or a bit bigger.40mm suits me, 42mm no problem. 45mm…..hmmmm maybe not.:)

    • sorry the 7 days I paid approx. 14k. i dont know why i typed the price of chrono. :p

    • +1

Ahhh glad to see a fellow JLC owner here!

  • Another fan of titanium watches here. Gold is so old-fashioned and scratches easily.
And sapphire face. Why don't mobile phones use sapphire? It must shatter too easily in larger sizes.

But who actually wears watches any more?

    • Very scratch resistant. But more likely to shatter. Also gives the screen a bluish tinge which is not good for colour reproduction.

Not sure what it would do to touch sensitivity, but it would certainly make it much more expensive

Would love a smart watch that isn't crap. Apple Watch isn't there yet, and I moved away from iPhones anyway. I can't find an Android wear watch in person so I don't know about them. I daily wear my Omega at the moment but I can see a time in the near future where I replace that with a smart watch.

I'd like to add one of the new non-magnetic Omegas to the collection for when I'm working in MRI. I don't like not wearing a watch!

    • I wonder how dangerous MRIs are to your watch if you're only in the next room, not in the same room as the scanner. I know that most are 1.5T or 3T, so even an Omega 15,000 gauss is not enough. It'd have to be a 30,000 gauss to be safe.

      • +2

I sit at the controls of a 3T MRI most days of the week. No problems at all with my watches.

MRI's (most, but varies from system to system) are actively shielded so the field strength outside of the bore is markedly reduced.

Even in the scan room standing next to the bore opening, to position a patient for example, will have a lower than 1.5T field strength due to the shielding.

In most of the setups I've worked in the field isn't completely negated by the operator controls but it's generally down around the fridge magnet level. As I said - my watches have shown no ill effects after many years. After all, these machines are surrounded by electrical equipment often with spinny disc magnetic drives all without issue at all.

I'd be happy to drop the coin on the Omega and walk into the scan room that same day wearing it. The Rolex Milgauss isn't worth considering for such work, though.

Wouldn't wear it into the bore though as field strength increases rapidly the closer you get. And 3T is probably pushing it.

    Age: 32 (M)
    Occupation: IT
Cost: Too much… but top tip is to go 2nd hand when it comes to mechanical watches - just make sure it's been recently serviced.

Not really sold on smart watches, and might not ever get one either. I think most mechanical watch fans are in some ways anachronistic.

  • Love and biased towards the diver watch style - classic tough look and useful bezel - daily watch until recently a $100 Lorus diver - currently wearing a MS Band 2 which is super cool smart watch / fitness band but not a watch! Here's a list of criteria that make up my ideal watch
    1. Waterproof (never take it off - showers, beach, etc.)
    2. Day and Date display (Yes I may need to be reminded what day it is)
    3. Easy read face (no 'useless 'clutter' on the face so it's a simple glance - and it's a social service to provide time - the guy at back of bus has a right to easily read the time from your watch)
    4. Luminescent hands (night use)
    5. Diver Bezel (most underrated and useful watch device ever)
    6. Steel Band - for the classy 'jewellery' look
    7. Does not cost a bomb (this is OzB!!)

+1 for the Ecodrive -ethically cool not carrying inbuilt energy source and not a lithium battery

Also I have a beautiful 1957 OMEGA CONSTELLATION PIE PAN CHRONOMETER AUTOMATIC - passed down to me - use as a dress watch time to time - made in the hey day of fully auto mech watches before quartz movements introduced.

(Income) - enough to live a happy life.
Additional thoughts - I buy watches because I love the workmanship in them. One day I'll get a Patek with a couple complications!

    • +2

How did you justify $24k for a watch?!

Is it just one of those intangible purchases that you never have to explain, or does it have magical powers (e.g. controls time rather than tells it, doubles as a commute to work, etc.).

      • I know it's a lot of money but money is just that right. Relative to my income I don't think it's so bad - for me, everything is measured in wedding pay-packets, so this will cost me about 4 weddings which is about 5 days work. Not so bad if I think about it that way :)

Yep it's hard to explain. Owning a well made, relatively unique watch that's medium to high end (in the world of watches) is something every GQ man needs. It's like having to own a custom made, designer suit at least once in your life. YOLO!

My brother in law has a collection of about 20 Pateks, most with grand complications. Now that's big $ !!

  • Hey guys,

I've noticed a few of you own the Omega Speedmaster Professional, just wondering how you guys manage to wind it up each day?

I only use mine occasionally and find it a big hassle to wind it up, change the time and then a few days later it goes flat again and I have to repeat :(

I loved the heritage of the watch which is why I purchased it but now kind of wish I had a normal automatic.

    • All my watches are automatic. I swap weekly to fortnightly to avoid having to reset the time!

    • +2

Buy a winder if winding the watch bothers you that much. But honestly, winding is part of the joy of owning a mechanical non-automatic imho

I agree it does get tedious if you have a date setting — I couldn't imagine having to wind AND set a perpetual calendar every time it stops…

      • The 321c and the 861c speedmasters are a hand wound mechanicals, the watch winder would be useless.

      • +1

Totally agree with the manual winding - I look forward to spending the 20-odd seconds each day to wind it up, it's actually part of the charm! I think if it's worn daily, it's easier to get into habit of winding it up every morning on the train to work.

Still know the time; can either guess or look at any of the million clocks around me at any time of the day (phone, computer, clocks on other items, other people's watches). Find that even after over a decade since wearing a watch, I still look instinctively at my empty wrist every time someone asks for the time/date. In spite of what ads in the AFR seem to imply, my business and personal life hasn't been adversely impacted by not having an expensive timepiece, and I enjoy not being physically handcuffed to time.

And a Ball Fireman Classic (40") with black face on a steel bracelet for everyday wear : http://www.ballwatch.com/global/en/collections/fireman---26/…

Both retail for around the $2k mark in Aus.

Also have a Mondaine and a Wenger (both quartz) that I've had for 10 years or so wear casually sometimes.

I Love Balls (and you can quote me on that). The Engineer II Worldtimer really appeals to me, but i can't justify it; mostly because i have a strict 4 watch collection law laid down by She Who Must Be Obeyed and couldn't work out which one of my current watches to flip for it.

Know what you mean. I broke one of the cardinal sins of watch buying and bought my 2 Balls in relatively quick succession when I had a few dollars spare, hence the similarity in design/style.

I did have a Seiko cheap student watch ages ago and a HP watch as well.

  • -3

Talk about generalization… What if you won a nice watch or inherited it or it was given to you as a gift - this shouldn't dictate your social status - If you bought a Rolex with a suitcase full of $100 notes good for you however!

I don't mind getting my hands dirty, so I don't care for watches too much, although I do own a Jag watch it was given to me as a gift RRP $160, no big deal.
Will it help you sleep at night to know you have a better watch than everybody else on a website for penny-pinchers?

    • I think you are over reqcting its just nice to see what people have . If you feel insecure it doesnt mean others do. My most expensive watch is worth $700 i hot it for $550 and i like the look of it more than all the expensive watches listed here. As long as uou are happy with what you have it shouldnt ever be a problem.

      • i dont think i over reacted lol just because i dont agree with OPs idea about connecting what watch someone owns with their age, income and occupation - looking to judge people based on what watch they own, give me a break mate!

        • Sorry for the typos. Messaging from my phone.
Anyway i do believe we are looking at the same thing from 2 different perspectives. I actually dont think bragging rights and employment / income association has anything to do with this. Im by no means wealthy. But on my list to buy is still a Glashutte which is about 10k however ill buy it when i practically can

        • @maverickjohn: Oh well, his name is Tony Abbott so i won't worry too much about what he thinks haha

Great selection. Big fan of the Bauhaus style and Nomos in particular but just don't have the cash.

When did you purchase the Nomos and was it from Masterwatchmaking(Sydney)?
Seemed like a good deal for 1.8k!!

      edit: sweet collection btw :)

Bought it around 2012 and it was from Masterwatchmaking. I think i was lucky and got in just before a price increase, i also upgraded to the display back. Can heartily recommend them if you're thinking of getting a Nomos; the owner, Karl is a consummate gentleman!
