What Watch Do You Wear?

Watches have a unique status as a Veblen good, and basically the only piece of jewellery that society will allow a man to wear.

Watches can be worn as a show of status or wealth, a show of fashion sense, or they can be worn to show the time.

As a community of dirty misers and professional bargain hunters I'm interested to know what watches we wear, and why?

Please state

  • Watches owned
  • Main watch
  • How much did you pay and was it from Ozbargain?
  • Age
  • Gender

I think this will be very interesting to see.

Cheers friends.

A very nice automatic Tag Heuer I bought from the Philippines for $30. Still works great after 11 years and will be inherited to my son. You don't really own a fake Tag, you merely look after it for the next generation.

i swear, if i see you wearing an apple watch or a daniel wellington, i will personally, not do anything actually. i don't judge.

Formal - Tag Carrera - paid 2500 cash - walked into a jeweler's after a big win at the casino when I was 19 and just picked it out. retail was about 4500 I think at the time.

Everyday - Black Komono ($100 from iconic), was just away for the weekend and bought a SS band Casio for $50. Been looking at a MVMT but for a 3rd of the price I went with the Casio.

Would like to buy IWC Portuguese / Rolex Submariner / Panerai Luminor sometime in the future.. have planted the seed for GF as an engagement present if we do get engaged lol

Yes. Chronograph, blue leather alligator strap.
Longines master collection has also been on my list haha.

        • cant go wrong with any three of those for a wedding present!

          Although my preference would be:
          Subby > PAM000 or PAM111 > IWC Portugese

The subby is so versatile, while the lunminor is at the casual end of the scale and the portugese is at the dressier end.

    • I have an iwc porty… I love it, even if it is a fake. Would love to own an original..

      Maybe in 20 years!

      Good taste my man!

      • Is it fake in the sense that its a fake IWC branded watch, or is it an lookalike done by another company?

        Either way…pictures?! :D

    • +1 for the Tag Carrera I own one too..

  • Huawei Watch, paid around $420 from OzBargain. I'm 24, Male and work in IT.

The watch is nice, my first smart watch. I almost bought an LG G-Watch when it released but thankfully a mate bought one first and I didn't like it. Skipped the first Moto 360 due to poor reviews.

The watch works well in my industry as I use my phone a lot. It let's my view and interact with my notifications whilst I'm in meetings. I don't use it for much else. Recharging it daily can be a little annoying.

  • LG G Watch R
Got it when it first hit the shelves, Ozbargain had 5% off JB store wide voucher. I then haggled with them to allow another voucher netting me over 10% off.

I quite like the usefulness of a smartwatch in school. Well worth the price to me.

    • I'm curious to know how it helps you at school? Wouldn't it be a distraction?

      • +1

It allows me to view and interact with notifications without drawing attention to myself from teachers. We're not actually allowed to communicate with our parents during the day (unless it's for emergencies, in which case we have to use the school's phone), so the watch allows me to do this whenever I want.

        • Thank you.
The communication thing - is that specific to your school? I see a lot of high school kids in train with smartphones. Are they not allowed to use it during school hours? Or maybe its just within school premises.

        • +1

@readyState: Not too sure. We're allowed to use our phones during school, even in class, we just can't contact our parents. Very strange rule.

    Citizen quartz chrono (gift)
Dress watch: emporio Armani Quartz (gift)
    Citizen pro master digital (gift)

    26 years old. Medical.

Looking to purchase "nicer" watches. I have a good disposal income but I find it hard mentally to come to terms with dropping multiple thousands on a watch

My next watch will probably be a Junkers dress watch

Thoroughly recommend the seiko skx007 as a great diver that doesn't break the bank

    • +1

If you opt for a "nicer" watch with a solid history you will never lose money. I have previously purchased watches, worn them for a few years, and resold them for more than what I paid.

      • I live in Adelaide. The second hand market is dead here

I honestly also would not know he difference between a real and a fake, so I would only purchase from a dealer

  • G shock, duel display analog and digital display. Purchased for $120 from deals direct not a deal on OzB.

    Fitbit surge.
Gift and loving it. Never realised how many km I'm walking until now.

    • Too bad hte Surges are ugly as all hell.

      • Ugly as all hell but still functional.

I get call and text notification with vibration which is handy as I work in instrustrial sites and can't hear of feel the vibration from my phone most cases this helps out a lot.

The screen is decent size to swipe through all the stats quickly.

I've also got a G-shock. Nice and sturdy and don't have to worry about it getting scratched, drowned etc.

  • I have a genuine TAG and a fake (I think) Raymond Weil I purchased off ebay.

Cost 4k for the tag about 14yrs ago and $300 for the other same time. I preffer the Raymond Weil, doesn't need batteries and looks great.

Hardly wear either now as I work as a chef and nothing worse than a watch on your wrist.

  • I wear a withings activite, I got it about 10 days ago, it cost about 220 and was from good old dick Smith at 70% off during their closing down sale. I like it a lot, but no idea who would drop over 700 bucks for one.

Never been a fan of rolex due to the sheer volume and number of people owning it, but can not argue the resale value of rolex is better than my collections.

  • Two watches, main watch is a T.W. Steel T35, the other is a Seiko 5 automatic 21 jewels, both were given to me, I'm 14 year old male.

CASIO ProTrek watch, digital one, had it for ages and its lasted very well. Never take it off and its charged by the sun so no batteries I need to change win :)!

Watches owned - In order, Casio, Casio, Casio, Seiko, Swatch, Tag Heuer (gone), Montblanc Time Walker, Rolex GMT2 Ceramic (gone), Citizen Eco Drive, Rolex Submariner Ceramic
Main watch - Rolex Submariner Ceramic
How much did you pay and was it from Ozbargain? - Too much for the Rolex, but less than what would cost today due to price increase. Could have sold the GMT2 for a profit, but sold it to a colleague for what I paid. Citizen Eco Drive from OzBargain.
    Mid 30s male in finance.
Additional thoughts - Don't buy mid tier brand watches if you aspire for something better, i.e. Rolex. Just get the Rolex you want, you'll save yourself money in the long run.

    • More like if you really want a Patek don't settle for a Rolex. Start saving and get on the wait list for some.

      • Perhaps, but if you buy a Rolex, wear it for 5-10 years, you get to use the Rolex and can sell it for the same, if not more than what you paid for it.

No watch brand has higher resale than Rolex Sport models, plus they are always in high demand new and used.

No doubt that Pateks are better watches than Rolex, but you definitely pay for the privilege, furthermore Patek cut prices last year which angered some owners and collectors.

Having said that, if I had the money, I'd get a Patek Nautilus.. maybe one day after the mortgage is paid off and the kids have finished school.

        • investment wise, patek is a much better investment than rolex. less liquid but due to the limited nature of patek, in couple years time it should worth more than rolex percentage wise

        • @antzz:

I'm pretty sure a Stainless Steel Sports Rolex will hold it's value the similar or better than Patek overall.

A gold Rolex, not so much.

The price cut last year wouldn't help Patek's resale, nor a downturn in the economy.

That's not to say I don't like Patek, but Rolex ainless Steel Sports model hold their value better than any other new watch today (limited edition models aside).

  • Watches owned: Citizen BM6921-58E, MTM Black Hawk, Suunto Core, Redux COURG and a dozen others that I don't wear often.

Main watch: Alternate between the Seiko and Orient for day to day wear. Dress watch is the Omega.Gym and rough use is the Gshock.

How much did you pay and was it from Ozbargain? Only Orient was from Ozb. About ~120USD including teh custom strap.

You do not need to buy fancy watches to be an aficionado. My absolutely favourite budget watch is the Orient. To think something so inexpensive has such excellent workmanship really impresses me.

On the relatively higher side, the Omega is an absolute beauty. Having read extensively about the movements as well the assembly inside, a true marvel of engineering.

For the chaps with the speedmasters, hope you're aware of the highly distinguished history of the Speedmaster. :) A timepiece that saved the lives of astronauts of Apollo 13.

  • I have a few watches in various states of servicability.

    1984: Casio GD-8 Car Race

    1987: Swatch GK101 Techno Sphere <- "flamboyant"

1991: Lorus V732 quartz (chipped glass)

1994: "Mugen Power" digital from a skill tester. Needs a band and the wrist of a 12 year old.

2003: Kabana quartz ($10 HK crap, still works)

    2010: Casio AQ-163 Edifice

    2012: Daybird 3536 mechanical (DX)

    2014: Weide WH1009 quartz (eBay)

The last two in bold were inspired by OzB, and for around $20 these are my favourites.

Longines Master something, I have no idea.

The mrs bought it to help me look older, or at least look my age. I have a bit of a baby face. Yes, I get that it's pretty useless and redundant with my iPhone etc. Also don't find it comfortable lugging metal around my wrist and I only wear it when I have to and it's important to project the right image.

Anyone who tells you image isn't important (I used to say that when I dressed like a bum) is being naive.

Additional thoughts: I originally bought the Nixon watch as my first watch from General Pants. I really like it, very casual and I still wear it out. Wanted something a bit more dressy as I wear a suit to work everyday. Missus got me the Armani exchange watch. Not bad for a 'fashion watch'. Casio protrek Prg130t. Best watch i have had. Solar charge on battery, not replaced in 5 years I've had it.

Has compass, temp, altimeter, moon and tide.

Useful if bushwalking as you can trek the altitude which makes it easy to collerate to mapd. Also great for surfing as you can see when low and high tide is.

    Occupation/Industry: Public sector

Additional thoughts: I guess for me personally, watches represent significant moments in my life. Received the seiko chrono as an 18th birthday gift which started my love and appreciation of watches. I received the TAG recently for my 21st. Orient Symphony I bought when I got my first 'real' job, etc. Hopefully someday when I have my own kids, I can pass on my watch collection so they too can appreciate what is arguably the greatest asset of all - time.

Notice none of my brands have been mentioned yet. I work in the finance industry however have tried to be restrained compared to many others that are well paid in the industry.

    I also have a couple of fakes/replicas that I don't really wear anymore as I know they are not the real deal;

I have had a bookmark of that watch for about 12 months now; still waiting to purchase it !

    • B & M Capeland Cobra Red on Blue…love it in Rose gold case more than silver….OMG!! Homer Drools & Gurgle noise

  • Owned a Pulsar quartz chronograph, passed it on to fam when I received my current one a few weeks ago as a gift. Was ok but the second hand only moved when you use the stopwatch function which was disappointing.

Rossini 8663 (An apparently high-end Chinese watch brand) automatic, for roughly $400AUD I'm told. Japanese miyota movement, sapphire crystal/stainless steel. Pretty happy with it, good worksmanship and open-heart design and keeps accurate time +-5s per day. I wish the dials and hands were glow-in-the-dark though, that's my only major criticism.

Here's a picture of it for the curious because it's virtually unfindable online (cos China I presume).

  • Male, low income, Original Pebble Smartwatch, cost me $89 at Dick Smith and for it from Ozbargain post. Bought original on December 1 2014. Works fine but had it replaced once in July. I also own an LG G Watch and before that used to use cheap analogy or sometimes digital watches from Crazy Clarks/ Reject Shop etc. Simple, battery life lasts a week, easy to use and perfectly visible in sunlight.

  • actually feeling a bit silly now, given that not many people seem to own many watches. Certainly less than i was expecting!

I have about 30 watches in different types. Got a bit of mix of dress watches, casual watches, etc. Just sort of accumulated them over the years and have come to realise that there's a lot of garbage out there

Got a couple Georg Jensen chronographs, couple Maurice Lacroix dress watches, half dozen 1950-60s Omega Seamaster Devilles in different styles (dress watch, much slimmer than a regular Seamaster to suit my smaller build), two Girard Perrigeauxs, a few Timex Weekenders and wind ups, handful of Favre Leuba old school wind up watches, casual Hugo Boss, 21st birthday present Certina dress watch, and half dozen antique pocket watches. The main watch is probably the Hugo Boss - there's just something about it that I like and it was only a $100 buy

Not a big Rolex, Tag, or James Bond-style Omegas but people (like me!) instinctively assume they're fakes, even if they aren't. Last two blokes I have seen wearing Rolex's - one is a friend of mine who told me it was a fake, and the other guy was at the back of a Jetstar flight and had a 1st gen iPhone………..you tell me if it was real or not

I have a little kit from ebay as well to change the straps, batteries etc and have a bunch of spare straps. I have customized most of the watches with my own choice of leather or NATO or canvas straps. And i built a neat little cabinet to house them all

    Male, 30, engineer

I don't actually wear any of them to work tbh since i don't want to scratch them on my desk and i definitely won't wear on site. But will always bust them out after work, on the weekend, or for an event. Depends what event I'm going to - i learnt the hard way not to wear the Omegas to fancy events with open bar. First night i had worn it and i dinged the bloody glass after too many drinks

    • because watches are expensive, that's why a lot of people cannot have a dozen PP or VC. dont be disappointing

    • What did you think of your friend when he told you his watch was a fake? And given your collection I assume you're in petroleum or mining?

      • No problem with him wearing a fake watch. It looks nice, and not everyone automatically assumes its fake like I do haha. It was an expensive good quality fake too (if there is such a thing) so it definitely gives a certain sense of quality

Project engineering actually. My watches aren't crazy expensive - i'm not buying $2k Omegas and so forth, and I have been collecting for the last 10 years. That is why I bought a few Favre Leuba's because they are all cool retro timepieces but only cost about $90 to buy. Customise with a cool strap and you've got a really eyecatching

Cost me 440 euro and seemed to have great reviews. I wear it everyday to work and switch the band to a khaki NATO band for casual wear.

    • Looks stunning, guessing it looks even more amazing with a khaki NATO. Did you import it?

Daily driver: Seiko SKX007 on an oyster bracelet
    Dress/office: Seiko SARB033
Casual: Timex Weekender on leather NATO

Seikos bought second hand from various watch forums. Weekender purchased from Amazon.

Looking to pick up a Omega Seamaster and hopefully a Speedmaster in a couple of years.

    • Nice to see someone mention the SARB, stunning watches for the price

    • Are you Australian? What watch forums are there for Australians?

      • Yes.

There's a strong Australian following on watchuseek.

I got the SKX007 on a computer forum surprisingly.

  • Seiko orange monster.

    LG G Watch
Got it for US$100 18 months ago in Black Friday sale.
    22, Male. IT-ish.
Additional thoughts: Maybe it's time for an upgrade. It has served me well. I use it for directions when riding and for notifications. It is very efficient in helping me consume lots of notifications.

Also, a Fitbit Charge HR. Not technically a watch. Got it for A$120 1 year ago from Dick Smith (via Ozb)

Omega Seamaster (older quartz model) blue face ($1300)
    Frederique Constant Slimline ($550)
    Swatch sistem 51 ($90)
I'm a 25yr old male and an accountant. I also own a truck load of watch bands both leather and canvas, I love changing the bands because its like having a new watch
Also wear a fitbit charge HR daily

    • both leather and canvas

      What, no silicone?
I have a bunch of these silicone bands with clasp, not buckle.
Nearly 4 years on the Daybird, still like new.

    • Great collection - I would've bought up a similar set-up except I am now too poor

    • Finally, another Nomos owner. You must have got yours pretty early to get it at that price.

I've got the Nomos Orion too. I am a very practical person (I bought it for multiple reasons) so it will be the only watch i've got for quite awhile.

I absolute adore my nomos, such a classy watch. The blue hands and gold indices really pop nicely. Only issue is no lume but that's not a big deal. No one has ever recognised it which is good and bad. I feel like they should be more popular than they are because they're a fantastic watch.

I bought in 2013 in Amsterdam. I got a great deal and the exchange rate was fairly good at that point plus I got lucky. The store owner did me a favour and didn't charge me any tax, he told me to take it to the normal place at the airport and they would process it and he would get the tax back. I did as I was told and the airport said 'that's not a thing' so I carried on my merry way.

When I got back to Aus the glass cover actually came off. One day I put the watch on and it simply popped off. There was no damage or anything. I contacted Nomos directly and they repaired it free of charge under warranty and paid for express post to and from Germany. The customer support was outstanding I even got a Nomos branded Moleskin.
