What Watch Do You Wear?

Watches have a unique status as a Veblen good, and basically the only piece of jewellery that society will allow a man to wear.

Watches can be worn as a show of status or wealth, a show of fashion sense, or they can be worn to show the time.

As a community of dirty misers and professional bargain hunters I'm interested to know what watches we wear, and why?

Please state

  • Watches owned
  • Main watch
  • How much did you pay and was it from Ozbargain?
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Occupation/Industry
  • (Income)
  • Additional thoughts

I think this will be very interesting to see.

Cheers friends.

Thanks to you Mr Abbott, I can't afford one.😁

    • +1

Surely you can afford one these watches or are SSD's your priority in life?

      • You know it…👍

    • +4

the only piece of jewellery that society will allow a man to wear.

Tony, again you prove that you're out of touch

    What Watch Do You Wear?

    A wristwatch.

    • lol i think you got negged because you didn't state your age.

      • The age field was added after I made my comment…

        • i think you were negged for commenting too soon.

  • +10

Right now, an Orient auto diver, from OzB.
Most days, a Seiko 5 railway automatic.
I own a few quartz watches from 'brands' but I never seem to wear them.
I also own a few wind-up watches from the 50s and 60s that I got on ebay for $30 or $40. Most are either companies that have gone out of business, or are unknown, but they look nice.

I haven't got much interest in what other people think about my watches, I like them because of the engineering, history and looks.

  • I havent worn a watch in 20 years, I dont care what the time is and am not beholden to any master.
If I do need to know, my $40 phone has a clock as does my motorcycle as do all the other sheep.

    • +4

Most people these days wear them for fashion imo rather than telling time as everyone has a smartphone…

      • +1

The look and I don't like taking my smartphone out all the time.

        • You'd be a rare breed.
99.9% of people I see under the age of 40 dont seem to be able to go anywhere without their eyes glued to a phone, walking driving, eating, probably while having a dump.

        • @Davros: definitely while having a dump, prime phone clock watching

      • +1

Eh it takes all of .2 seconds to tell the time with a watch. CBF taking my phone out of my pocket to check the time.

    • $40 phone…man you are a TA!

      • +1

Its a phone, not a wanking device and the $40 (ZTE Buzz) does everything I need it to do and more.

        • +9

          You're a cheery chap/chapette.

        • +5

@robbyjones: Yes I am. I have more than I need, a loving wife and family and no debt
I do not need shiny trinkets to make me feel better about myself or fill a void in my life.

        • @Davros: Lucky you… No mortgage. or renting?

        • +2

          @Bazeegar: Mortgage paid off.

        • -2

          @Davros:

Yet you feel that you need to tell the whole world that. Interesting, I didn't think a fulfilled man had anything to prove!

        • @Rum: Now here IS an angry man
I was asked and I answered. I didn't volunteer it.

Go back to your namesake and that unfulfilled feeling you clearly harbour.

Fitbit charge HR 8 days old…

    • +2

Same here but 6 months old.

Recently I got it replaced directly from Fitbit as the previous one was having battery issues (lasted at most half a day).

    • Well played. I wanted a charge hr but no stock. Got a refund and opted for the blaze. Loving the stats provided.

      • After having charge HR, I feel that blaze would be nice to have…

    • 8 day old ozbargainer and already own a fitbit charge hr!
      You deserve a trophy

      • Did you see my profile?

        • Yep, you've got 25 badges. Awesome

  • +4

I've got a couple of nice Seikos, but the watch I wear the most is a Casio A158W.

I think it looks great, it's superbly durable and functional, and if I ever lose it or break it, replacements can be had for about $25. One time I lost it and it turned up months later at the bottom of the rubber seal on my washing machine door, still as good as the day I bought it.

I think its a true oz bargainer's watch.

And fun fact, the A158W's cousin, the F-91W is the watch of choice of Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt, and supposedly numerous terrorists currently detained in Guantanamo Bay!

    • +4

      Love the F-91W!

      • +2

Always owned several of F-91W's since I was a teen and now in my mid 30's. It's the most reliable basic watch out there.

    • +1

I always wear my F-91W. What a great and timeless design! It is such a beautiful watch.

    • +2

      +1 for A158W.

    • +1

Agreed! I lost mine recently so just ordered a new one from eBay. I have a feeling the cleaners at work stole it…

    • +1

I have smaller wrist. F-201WA for me with 10 year battery life. (8th year running for the battery)

  • +2

G Shock at work, but ive got a titanium citizen and sporty ediface. Had a smart watch, outgrew the fad.

  • +3

basically the only piece of jewellery that society will allow a man to wear

… if you manage to forget about rings, earrings, piercings, grills and necklaces.

    • +3

You won't find many grills round here. There has never been a bargain offered.

    • +3

Start wearing a grill in Australia and see how 'society' accepts you.

    • +3

I was going to start wearing a grill but I feared others getting all up in mine.

A list of watches that I've ever owned:

    1. Oldskool Casio digital watch (can't remember model)
    2. Upgraded to a Casio with a telememo function
    3. Upgraded to a more formal looking Casio AQ160
    4. Pebble in black (my first smartwatch)
    5. Pebble Time Steel with black leather strap (my current timepiece, and also the most expensive watch I've ever owned (200 AUD))

Never really worn a watch as a fashion statement. If I wanted to impress I would spend the dosh on a nicer suit and shoes.

    • Very similar history and logic. I started on oldskool casinos, then went a little upmarket with about 6 AQ160's ($40AUD)….though about the pebble a lot…but moved onto a Garmin vivoactive as I swim and run.

    • This isn't far off me, but I alternate a pebble and a g watch. I haven't worn any of my old watches in ages

  • +5

My g-shock doesnt come off my arm, except when showering and for exams.

    • +21

      So twice per year then?

      • +12

        8 times, 4 subjects a semester.

        • -1

So you shower every 3 months?

        • +25

          @brotherrfranciz:
No silly, if I have 8 exams a year and take my watch off 8 times a year. I don't shower at all.

          (PS I do shower regularly)

        • @brotherrfranciz:

          Hey… brother

  • +13

basically the only piece of jewellery that society will allow a man to wear

I disagree with your sweeping statement that appears to be written purely for dramatic effect.

There's other acceptable pieces of jewellery for men, such as:

    Cufflinks
    Tie clips
    Belt buckles
    Lapel pins (eg. ANZAC pins)
Necklaces (eg. cross necklaces worn by Christians)
    Rings (eg. wedding bands)

    • +1

Is a tie clip really jewelry? I use it solely because I hate getting hit in the face with my tie, and the ones I have were ~$1 ea from AliExpress.

      • +1

They can be, I've got a gold one that is pretty fancy.

      • I don't wear a tie often, but how do you hit yourself in hte face with it?

    • +1

      +1 for cufflinks

    • I am stealing your quote "I disagree with your sweeping statement that appears to be written purely for dramatic effect."

Almost everyday there are situations where it could be used!

  • +9

I think this will be very interesting to see.

    how so?

Plenty of time on your hands?

    • This riddle for Tony will also be very interesting.
" I have one hand short and one hand long. Long one to reach the back side. Guess what am I?"

  • +1

    Rolex GMT

  • I rarely wear a watch but if I need to it is the wrist receiver of whatever heart rate monitor I use.

  • +1

So you acknowledge that this is a community of bargain hunters. But you're asking everything except the price we paid for the watch. You didn't even ask if we got it from a deal posted on OzBargain. At least that's how I got mine.

    • So what are you wearing? And how much was it?

      • +1

        Hey babe I'm wearing a $2 thong.

        On my foot. :P

Tony, are you going to wear your budgie smugglers for me?

Haha anyways I just have a Citizen Eco Drive that was $110 delivered with one of those star buy deals.

I also have a $60 plastic Maxum that I wear in the surf or if I go running/swimming.

  • I got a Suunto and a Fossil.
My everyday watch is a Casio Alt6000. I have it since 1998.

  • A Veblen good, by definition, is something that costs more than it should, but appeals to (profanity) because of that.

    Appeals to bankers.

  • Have a fossil and the horse - great local company (https://www.thehorse.com.au/collections/time-tellers_the-sto…). Female, under 30.

    • One of my housemates has a The Horse watch. I've always liked the look but at 40mm they're a bit big (and expensive) to get for my girlfriend. The stone dial is a cool touch though.

      • Yeah, they are pretty large but can work if that's the look you're going for - I have a pretty small wrist myself. :)

        • i like the horse. can't go wrong with a reputable local brand like the horse or mvmt

Got it for a steal at $300,000.
Problem is I need to refer to the manual to know what time it is.

    • Looks freaky ugly to me at first glance. A bit alienish.
Lucky for me I'm not the in the target price band :)

  • +4

    Rolex Submariner

Had lots of smart watches the pebbles, the sony variations, fitbits and others

Really don't do smartwatches anymore, I have a phone that does that. Don't have a constant need to lose my attention span.

    • What do you mean you don't want something dinging for attention to alert you that the other thing that could ding by itelf needs to be taken out of your pocket?

  • +2

I wear a Tissot Tradition Chronograph silver dial with brown strap.
Also got a 6 years old Fossil FS4387 that still works perfectly but few scratches on the crystal.

  • I stopped wearing watches when i got my first phone … why do you need more than 1 device that can tell you the time?

  • None

  • hey buddy whats with you and that crelin?

  • +3

I usually wear a Parnis Diver as my daily driver, costs me around $150 when it first came out. I had one of these but was damaged in an accident, also around $150 shipped.
I have a PTS Tourbillon as my dress watch, got it cheap in an auction for around $500.
I sometimes wear a Pebble OG when I feel a bit tech savvy on the day, got it from Dick Smith when it was closing down (~$80)…

    Male / early 30s / medical & health industry

    • Yeah Parnis make great everyday watches, the only caveat is they are usually on the large side if you have a small wrist and you should replace the strap. I wear a moonphase cost a little over $100 (will be more expensive now with US exchange) and has been very accurate for the last two years

  • +1

I swap between a Tissot Visodate ($600), Longines Hydroconquest ($1300) and a Timex Weekender ($25, for work). I find mechanical movements fascinating and am not trying to make any fashion statement, I just like watches.

    • +1 for Timex Weekender. Picked one up via Huckberry with some great leather Form•Function•Form interchangeable straps!

Had many other and silly expensive watches previously and went Minimal and sold the lot on eBay. Now just have my Timex as day to day wear and for a more sporty look a limited edition DGK Casio G-Shock solar powered digital watch I got in Japan - seems to have been a wise investment according to that link!

Am thinking of a smart watch (Garmin Fenix3 HR) but not sure if the gimmick will wear off - or will it give me motivation to move more!

Agree that watches are a good accessory to the outfit - but another +1 for cuff links. Got a great pair of Lego cuff links at Comic-Con which I can build on; and as an Engineer it adds some colour to the usually drab office setting in meetings.

      • +1

Nice strap choice! The Weekender is great for a casual look at a low price and the Indiglo is really useful for checking the time in the dark. I should've said having a watch is essential for my job and a phone would never replace it.

That said, I don't want to part with my silly expensive watches - the quality feel (not that anyone besides me notices) and novelty of the movement with such history is something unique!

Cuff links are an option if your workplace/lifestyle is conducive to wearing them. I'll pick some up when I hit the professional workforce.

  • +4

I recommend a watch with an Eco-drive movement.. Never wind up, clean or change battery. Mines a Citizen and had it 15 years and never misses a beat.
One thing I like in watch is to be able to see the dial with my failing eyesight without glasses in the dark. The luminous hands and dark background on mine is the way for me.

    • +1

Yeah man, ecodrive nighthawk. Very good watch for the money.

    • I wear an ecodrive Skyhawk AT in titanium. 24/7.
      http://www.citizenwatch.com/en-us/watches/watch-detail/?mode…

I had to disable the atomic time signal because I'm too far away to get a reliable signal. It gets the signal, but it sometimes doesn't get the DST part, so can go 1hr out.

Its a big watch, but in titanium its quite lightweight. I wear it because I always wear a watch and I like the look of it, especially the dark grey of the titanium. It offsets perfectly with the black bezel and busy face.

I got it s/h on eBay from the UK for £150 shipped iirc.

Mr. Abbott here's my data. Got 2 watches:

    • Daily driver: Casio WS200H-1AV
    • Special occasions (going to weddings, meetings in suits etc): Casio MTP-1302D-1

Both around $30-$40 on eBay, posted from overseas. Had them for a few years. For me it's pretty much just time-telling device rather than fashion accessories. I am middle-age working-from-home male in the bargain hunting industry :)

I do not agree that having a smartphone replaces the good ol' watch. There are occasions where it might be appropriate to take the phone out from your pocket (or for some, purse or bag) just to check the time. Also I bought the WS200H-1AV a few years ago when I need to coach my daughter's basketball team. Precise time-telling is very important but I don't want to run up and down the court with a smartphone in hand.
