    38" Beginners Steel String

beginners are much better off learning with a nylon string guitar…

    • Completely disagree with that. It depends on the style you want to learn.

      • A good quality nylon string guitar is ideal for learning classical guitar. Note that there's a lot of junk. Good quality nylon string guitars are actually surprisingly difficult to find and the cheap $50 ones are usually rubbish.
      • For rock/pop I'd recommend a good steel string semi-accoustic. You can go as cheap as roughly $200 and get something good enough to learn on.
      • For pure 80's style rock I'd go an entry level electric. Fender Squires have a good reputation.
      • For metal an electric with humbuckers is the way to go.

The problem is that while there are reasonably good cheap instruments it requires skill and experience to spot them. Go shopping in person and take a friend who knows something about guitars. You need someone who can check the guitar for playability - stuff like string height and intonation. If you can't bring along a knowledgable friend your best bet is to pay a bit more and find a guitar with a good reputation.

An unplayable instrument will be frustrating and put you off that instrument for life.

The guitars at crazysales are cheap and don't have the best reputation.

      • Completely agree with all points here.

I cannot think of any positives about having a very cheap nylon string guitar. You will get frustrated by consistently having to tune it, as well as bad workmanship (like fret buzz). All the factors will eventually put you off it.

        • It's even worse than that. It's VERY hard to change the intonation on a nylon string guitar. You can use shims to go in one direction but they deaden the sound and you can't go in the other direction. So if it's not built really well you're stuffed - as in the notes you are playing are off! At least on an accoustic steel string you can often shave down the bridge itself - you have to go very slow not to bollox it up but it's doable. There's also no truss rod on most nylon string guitars so no way of modifying the action.

I play poorly and have issues playing now, but I have a lot of cheap guitars and I only buy guitars I can fix up. They might not sound as bright as the $1200 version with beautiful wood, perfect pickups and lovely craftsmanship but when I play a note at least it's in tune.

  • This guitar is unlikely to be any good. If you're starting out you'll get better odds of having something decent by spending $50-ish on gumtree.

Trying to learn on a rubbish guitar is a good way to ensure you never have enough fun to get good it. =)

    • I bought an electric guitar from CrazySales. It was garbage. I gave it away.

With musical instruments, you definitely get what you pay for.
