Motorola Moto X Style (Unlocked & Unbranded), $299 from Vodafone (When Added to Plan)

2710

Was in my local Vodafone store doing an upgrade and found out about this bargain.

So Vodafone which had the X Style as an exclusive have dropped the RRP on the device to $299

From what I have been told not every store has stock and they are no longer able to order them in however Online has 100's of units remaining.
There are 2 ways to get the device (other than getting on a plan of course, which is $0 on every plan at Vodafone)

1) Added to a Vodafone Plan as an installment (cheaper this way) $12.45 per month for 24m or $24.90 per month for 12 months You can also get Vodafone to add to your plan in 1 installment of $299

2) REMOVED: Lots of feedback indicating that Stores are unable to sell outright, phone must be added to new or existing plan, have removed this info to prevent disappointment, you can try and find Outright.. but expect resistance.

I was happy to add the phone to my existing plan for the 12m

in store you can ONLY get the black model (one i got)
if you are a Vodafone customer and are going option 1 above, you can call them or go online and get the White Model if your prefer.

Stock is showing as 2-3 days from order approval at moment so still plenty in stock

Not a bad phone for the price.. battery is not awful but not awesome. (one day max apparently)

  • how come im getting $40/pm plan?

    • +1

You cant order outright on their website.. click "upgrade" and log in and it will then show you outright options

Wont let me show pic cause i am "locked out" cause i did upgrade today.

      • +5

That doesn't seem to work either…

"Sorry, our system is currently down. Try again soon, or call 1300 301 464 to upgrade over the phone (standard call rates apply)."

And makes me wonder about the stability of the Vodafone system ;-)

      • how? I have to pay $414 in some sort of 'exit fee' if I want to 'upgrade' this from my iphone

        • +1

My understanding is if you are under contract you can add it on but the $299 will be combined with what ever other handset repayments you have remaining. So if as I understand it, if you had 200 left in handset repayments you would have $499 divided by the payments you choose.

      • Not a vodafone customer, but have always thought of moving on from Optus. Would getting a Month to Month Sim Only work? (in getting the phone)

        • it will works.

        • @windwai:
          wondering how?
add a 30 month to month plan to chart, then i don't know what to do :(

        • You have to do it in store so they can credit check you.

        • @windwai:
          thank you!
pathetically I live in a rural area with no vodafone store

  • Op is phone locked to Vodafone?

    • +6

      Not locked and not branded

  • +2

Looks like a great phone but it doesn't have fingerprint sensor.
    Will pass.

    • +16

U can do a karate chop motion to turn on the torch LOL now thats a selling point!! ha ha ha

      • +10

Fingerprint sensor is very handy for unlocking a phone.
I have got used to this feature.

        • +1

It's one of those features that once you have used it. You can't live without.

        • +1

@guy incogneto: unless you have a smart watch that unlocks your phonr within range

        • +1

Moto X has Moto Display to unlock. No need to use the power button. Can't remember the last time I used mine.

        • +2

I think that's going a bit far. I reckon I could still key in a 4 digit PIN if I really had to.

        • @guy incogneto:

I had iphone 6s plus in the past. Switched to huawei p8. So you can live without fingerprint sensor.

  • +5

God damn the lack of a fingerprint sensor. I'd be tempted to sell my 6P and grab one of these :P

    • +3

      It has a micro-sd slot though…

      • +1

The convenience of a fingerprint scanner destroys the convenience of a microSDXC slot for my personal uses. Every-time I grab a phone I immediately reach for the back, it's like second nature now.

I compressed my 29GB photo library to just 1GB (decent quality too), I stream all my music off Spotify, and I don't have that many apps, so my 32GB Nexus 6P is more than enough for me. For flashing ROMs and TWRP backups I just use a 32GB Samsung USB Flash Drive through an OTG cable.

        • I stream all my music from spotify, but also usually put tons of series of tv shows on it for me to watch at work when I'm bored. Also using the SD card instead of the internet makes your battery life a lot longer.

I wouldn't say this is an upgrade from a 6P though, more like a side-grade. Like if I was buying a big android phone, the nexus 6P and this are the only phones I would even consider.

        • @RI4V4N: Actually, mine are all saved online, so no extra battery usage. Should've phrased it differently, I don't stream them. I've got a server full of TV shows and movies, and can sync very compressed media on and off my phone on the fly, so no real worries for me there.

This isn't an upgrade from the 6P no, but it's very similar, and I could pocket the extra cash after selling my 6P :)

  • How do you get an EMI over 24 months of $12?

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/25845/39035/img_201605…

    • By going on to one of the more expensive plans ?!?

      • 1) Added to a Vodafone Plan as an installment (cheaper this way) $12 per month for 24m

Doesn't mention anything about more expensive plans…

        • OK, I got you - it's more expensive than posted…

The $0 option looks the best if you can somehow get it on a cheap plan ;-)

        • @oz-dave:
          Yeah have updated post.

On my paperwork it says $24 per month
but seems online its showing as $12.45 per month for 24m (if you choose that option)

        • @oz-dave:

Haha that's the $60 plan, which gives less entitlements than a SIM only plan. It'd be a good deal to add this to an existing SIM only plan.

That way you'd probably pay something similar to a subsidised plan whilst getting the higher entitlements of a SIM only plan.

        • @KaptnKaos:
My sister got the $50 12m plan and this phone

          Unlimited calls and tests
          11Gb Data a month
          12m contract
          phone $25
          $75 a month

        • @jimbobaus:

I've got an outright handset, but these are my Vodafone plan details:

Unlimited calls, SMS and MMS within Australia
          Unlimited overseas SMS and MMS
Unlimited calls to 10 selected countries
          14GB data
24 month contract (13 months elapsed)
          $30/month

        • @KaptnKaos:

          Nice :)
we went in to do upgrades on 2 services today
we have shared plans so my sisters 11Gb is in our pool now.
I was already on a sim only, an old $50 red sim M2M that i was paying $35 for, so i kept that and added the phone.

All up we have like 28GB across 4 services and i think without handsets costs we paying around $180 a month
The two phones added today bring that up to around 220 a month (only for 12m)

My sister was already on a $50 sim so resigning for 12m to get 11Gb was a no brainer :)

        • @jimbobaus: 12 month contract? Are they doing that anymore? I thought all Aus providers are only offering 24 month contracts from this year beginning?

        • +1

          @gentlecrack:
          Vodafone offers 2 part contracts

          1) you select a SIM ONLY you want (m2m, 12m or 24m)
          2) you select a device at RRP and pay it in insallments

          so sister is on
          12m $50 SIM ONLY
          with a 12m device installment

if she went m2m.. and left tomorrow (ported out) she would ONLY have to pay out phone but she went 12m on plan in this case

They of course offer standard 24m plans as well.. we just chose this way.. and always have

I think this way is the way things will end up in the long term.. its the way they do it in USA now

        • @jimbobaus: Thanks mate. That's good info. I have been searching for a 12m contract with phone after my Note Edge 12m ended this year Jan. Don't like getting locked to 24 months. I will follow your lead :)

        • +1

          @KaptnKaos: how??

        • @KaptnKaos:

Wow, how do you have so much data? Looking on their website, the $60pm plan only has 4gb included.

I've paid off my Note 3 so they gave me some sort of loyalty plan of $30pm and I think it has maybe 2.5gb?

Wasn't intending on switching phones but the last month my N3 has been going berserk, probably the new android update it just got. GPS going haywire or just not working at all, restarting at the slightest bumps.

    • Ok, well thats odd.. i did it in store and it was $12 per month, maybe online its the full $299
      Will update the original post
      Thanks for the Screenshot

how do i purchase it outright. i just tried it but there was no option to purchase the phone outright.

    • +1

Did you even bother to read the part in the descriptions that says "There are 2 ways to get the device…"

    • +2

To buy outright online you MUST be on a Vodafone plan already
they can add the phone onto the plan in 1, 12 or 24 installments

for the 1 installment option you MUST ring them..online will only let you do 12 or 24

If you are on a plan with them.. click UPGRADE on the Moto X Style page, it will send you a one time code and login to your account and select the phone and the payment option you want (see blow from KapnKaos)
      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/25845/39035/img_201605…

If you are NOT on Vodafone.. then u need to go into a store and get a store to sell to your directly (option 2 in original post)

  • What's the camera like on these? Was considering a Nexus 5X or LG G4 but for $250 less this is pretty tempting if the camera's OK.

    • +1

      20mp on rear
      5 MP wide on front.

So far i am super impressed.
reviews of the low light are so so.. but it certainly nothing to complain about.

her is a review i was reading (after i got the phone, as i bought it impulsively)

      http://www.trustedreviews.com/moto-x-style-review

      • thanks :)

Not really concerned about low light, speed of taking photos and autofocus is more important. We have a dog and trying to get her in focus is currently next to impossible :P

        • think like third page of that review is all about camera :)

        • +2

I own an X Style and a cat, and it's quite impossible to get a shot of a moving pet in focus. Probably due to the lack of OIS and a bit of shutter lag.

          Sample

        • @victorwilson: thanks

        • Try using an actual proper camera (preferably a DSLR). Phone cameras are OK in ideal conditions, but for any challenging conditions (low light, fast moving subjects, strong background light etc) you are far better off with a proper camera. Phone cameras have improved heaps in the last few years but will never match an actual camera due to size limitations (tiny lens, tiny sensor).

        • @billy_bob: have a DSLR but it's not really practical to carry around everywhere for spontaneous shots

        • @magicmoose: Fair enough, in that case LG G4 is probably the best phone camera for fast focus shots as it has Laser Auto Focus and Optical image stabilization. Also the F1.8 lens lets in more light, so the camera is able to use faster shutter speeds and still get a clear bright image.

  • +1

Anyone can buy it for me outright? (PM me)

  • Any comments on the size of the phone OP?

This is a really good deal for a great spec'd phone, but a 15cm+ tall/1cm+ thick phone scares my small hands!

  • This VS the Redmi Note 3 Pro?

    • +3

Iirc XRN3P has fingerprint reader and has dual sim.
Else everything about the Moto is better

    • +3

      Base from my research.

      Cpu is similar,
Battery redmi note 3 is better.
      Camera moto is better.
Moto is also water resistant and has Australian warranty. But redmi is slightly cheaper.

Moto is slightly bigger in size but also has a bigger screen.

      Redmi has a fingerprint sensor.

So depends on your needs. I just bought the redmi note 3, would've bought this if it was posted earlier.

      • +2

The moto g 3rd gen, x play and x style are also running pure android and seem to receive updates just a tiny bit slower than the nexus line, which is also a pretty big bonus.

    • Purely as a phone alone Moto is better. Out of these two, its the only phone that has full band support for all Aussie networks.

      • I have an x play (the model down from this) and I get better speeds than my friends iPhone 6s due to the better band support.

  • +17

Hmm. This is the best phone deal in a while.
Better than the recent LG G4 ~$370 deal.
Better than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 pro 32GB ~$270 deal…
    IMO

    • Better than the LG G4 deal for sure but comparable to the Redmi Note 3 Pro 32GB deal I think. I'm really liking the fingerprint sensor, full metal body and huge battery on the Redmi. But local Australian warranty on the Motorola pushes it slightly ahead.

      • Yes. Redmi is great though I've yet to touch one. However the Moto X has a great camera (perhaps not as great as the LG G4), great front facing speakers (perhaps the best speakers you can get???). And best of all, local warranty.
Yes, the XRN3P has finger reader and awesome battery life.

  • vodafone when the note 5 was released had a deal buying the phone outright. What i found most stores refused to sell unless on a plan, wanted to keep there stock.

    I would ring first!

    • The store I went to offered it to me as instalments.
We're not see keen to sell fit cash lol.

  • +9

I have owned this phone since release and have used many other Android phones in the past, including a number of Nexus devices which I absolutely loved. I can honestly say the Moto X Style has been fantastic! So much so I didn't even bother switching to the Nexus 6P once it was released like I had planned.

I really cannot fault the phone, Quick Charge 2.0 is a god send, the front facing speakers are fantastic, the 20mp camera in bright sunlight is stunning and some of the unique Moto Display functionality make it really hard to move away from this phone. Needless to say, I highly recommend it especially at this ridiculously low price.

    • I second this sentiment. I have this since release and it's a fantastic phone overall.

My biggest gripe is the shocking battery life. I don't carry the quick charger everywhere I go so have to rely on battery only. Even with moderate use, I can barely get a days use. I'm constantly watching my battery life which can get annoying.

      • do you also charge this moto x to another usb charger? say Apple iphone ones? or Samsung ones?

        • When i have to. I mainly charge it on the quick charger at home

  • +2

A lot of phone for $300. The only thing is missing is finger print but if you don't care and need a new phone superb deal. Heated

  • is there a referral discount of $5 per month when we signup to vodafone ?

    • I think the have a referral program but you need to go on a 24m plan to get it

Edit: just looked it up. Yeah to get the $5 referral the person who refers you and you must go on a 24 month plan

      • thanks mate

  • +1

OMG that is a huge phone.

    • +4

Physically smaller than my partners iPhone 6s Plus but has a bigger screen.
I love the design. Feels so small cause they use all the space for screen.

    • +1

Bigger is better. I used to have Sony Xperia Ultra, 6.4".
Every other phone now seems too small

      • +3

I had a 7" Optus MyTab. (ZTE V9) everybody laughed when it rang and I pulled it out of my pocket.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/46614

Nowadays, it does not look so big.

        • Haha, yes I remember doing the same. I still have 2 of these in very good condition. They were a bargain at the time ($99) but it is amazing what you can get now for similar money, eg Chuwi Hi8.

  • +2

Thanks OP. Grabbed one. I have a really old $0 postpaid plan with voda :)

    • How did you get it because im confused

      • well many many years ago i had a data plan on postpaid no contract. When i cancelled the data part of the account, they let me keep the postpaid account number on $0.

I always knew it would be useful.

        Now paying $12 a month for 24 months for a $700 phone

    • I have the same plan! Don't think it exists anymore right?

      • +1

Correct. The number attached to it has outgoing calls blocked so no one can ever use it

        • I guess it was a good idea to keep it lying around! Surprised this doesn't have a greater reception considering how it's on par with the 6p in real-life performance in most if not all aspects, minus the fingerprint reader. For $230 less than the recent Kogan deal for the 6p (and being Aus stock), how does this deal still have less than 100 votes?!? Blows my mind.

    • -1

      Did you signup online ?

      • +2

I have the same plan as him and I signed up online. Think they had 6/12/18/24 month options, but obviously 24 month will be the best. However you might be better off getting it in store if you're going overseas any time soon to claim TRS, provided you buy something else to get it over the $300 mark.

  • anyone can advice where I can get this outright around Perth? and to know which one is Dealer? and which one is company owned stores?

  • +1

Can I sign up on a byo sim only postpaid plan so I don't get into a contract.. And then buy this phone outright?

    • i guess so, as above im on a $0 account and it worked for me

    • Yes. Go on a month to month plan then add the phone.

      • +2

If you order a month to month plan online for $30, would you have to wait until the sim arrives and is activated to buy the Moto X, or can you do it straight away once you've signed up online?

        • This

        • +3

Just spoke to them on the phone. Apparently, you need to wait 90 days before you can add a phone.

        • @ww: awww :(

        • +1

          @ponyo:
I think if you go in store you can do it at once.
Something to do with being credit checked for phone and sim at same time

Store can have a phone sent to you direct I've just been told of they don't have the stock.

        • I got it on sim only month to month $30 just now. Plan to cancel within the first month.
