What are the ping times like, for us folk in WA?
Is it playable? Are there lots of Aussies playing?
Yes to both. In most games I get less than 30 ms ping and my internet is worse than most of Australia's. The great thing about rocket league is that you don't even need a lot of others to have a game since you can have 1v1 to 5v5.
you can beat americans with 230 ping, 100 is fine
Definitely playable! At the time the Oceanic servers were down so had to join overseas, still beat them with my 300+ ping! Though I was most likely up against Rookies/Semi-Pro/Pro that also started at around the same-time I did. I did once went up against a Veteran ranked player.

On a more serious note, it's quite a decent casual game. I know there's a competitive scene, though the majority of players are more casual and just hit the ball randomly in the direction of the goals. It allows for a more laid back gaming experience compared to most more competitive games around today. To add to this, casual ("normal"/non-ranked) games can be left at any time you please - there's no obligation to stay playing if you get bored or your team/enemy team is annoying.
what controls do people use for this on PC? it looks more suited to console? or is keyboard easy too?
Get an Xbox360 controller - pretty cheap esp. used ones from EB. You can play with keyboard+mouse but personally I find it hard.
I have an adapter thing which works with wii-u pro controller, but never tried it on pc. Maybe worth a shot. 2 player local co-op would be cool hmm maybe thats on the console version?
