  • Great! I grabbed one. Good timing with Mothers day around the corner

  • thats a damn good price. If only i had some money to spare.

    Bought the Breville.
    TRENT86 - you're a champion.

now…. all I have left to do is explain to my wife why we needed this.

    • +5

Let the coffee you make do the explaining

  • +1

Brilliant! Thanks OP - been waiting since I missed out on the December ebay sale, this is an even better price! The staff at the HN where I got mine were staggered at the price! Must say that HN are really lifting their game putting out some pretty good deals recently.

  • Wife just bought the 920 in store along with the smart grinder and we got the smart grinder for $234 when it is $249 online.

  • Thank OP Picked one up today. Worth the wait.

  • Awesome price… Makes me kinda wish I needed a new coffee machine!

  • +4

At this price I had to bite. And I did something I almost never do- purchased an additional 4 years replacement warranty on top of the 2 year Breville warranty for $99, giving me 6 years cover.

    • +1

      neato

    • I did the same as you. Had to get it at that price. Also the warranty as well.

    • actually thats probably a good idea

    • actually isn't the 4 year replacement warranty $149, how did you get it for $99?

      • The salesperson at the store just said it is normally $149 but I can do it for you for $99. Didn't even need to haggle. Could scan the receipt later today and post if that helps but as it is a popular deal it might be better to just ask.

      • -1

        …………………………………………………………………

      • Thanks for the tip, I did the same.

  • any opinion if the grinder worths the extra $250 to grind coffee beans or just get those "grinded" coffee off Coles or Woolies to save $250?

    • +4

They say (as in those who know what they are talking about rather than me) that the key to a good espresso is all about the freshness of the bean and quality of the grind. So most definitely save up your pennies and get a decent grinder and use fresh beans.

    • +3

100% get a good grinder …. the matching breville smart grinder is well worth the money (thats what I'm using)! Never ever put supermarket preground through the machine, its never fine enough and therefore the coffee will be weak and watery

      • yeah …. freshness isn't a problem ….. buy supermarket coffee beans all the time $20kg on special Vittorio or Lavazza, but you need to grind it fine enough….. so need the grinder.

    • +1

After the beans, the grinder is the single most important part. Look on gumtree for an old smart grinder if you need to save $$

    • +1

I have a manual hand grinder the hario mini mill which gives me a super fine grind, cost me about $40 online if you don't want to spend another 200$ right now and you also get to work out those arm muscles for a few minutes.

      • +1

Hario mini mill is great, but one thing of point is that the burr is not fixed and it wobbles slightly when grinding so you will have a less consistent grind than the Breville.

        • +1

I've modded my mini mill so that the arm is permanently attached, drilled a hole in the arm and screwed it onto the grinder as that it's all one piece now- But yeah it has a weakness I should have pointed out, that you end up stripping the screw after 6 months, but so far 6 months and my hario is working perfectly with this mod.

    • Always grind your coffee. The difference is night and day.

Let alone the fact that coffee oxidizes and starts to go stale pretty quick, the biggest thing you will find is that you have no ability to tweak store ground coffee. You just have to hope that it's ground right for you. Otherwise it's going to be underextracted (acidic and sour) or overextracted (bitter).

It's a bit more effort but once you find your butter zone, you will be making coffee on par (or better) than your local shop :)

    • +6

You'd be wasting your money then in getting a $700 machine. If you plan on using pre-ground packet coffee you may as well buy a $200-300 machine. It's well worth investing in a grinder and using good beans.

There are plenty of great grinds around for the $150-$200 mark. You don't necessarily need to go with the Breville one.

      • +1

It would be great if you could provide some suggestions, Powershopz? Coffee grinder reviews are a minefield for me.

      • is the sunbeam precision one ok? its 20% off on ebay

        • Precision is certainty okay, but as far as ease of use, I strongly recommend true smart grinder by grevillea.

You have the ability to set a grind time which essentially will give you a consistent amount of coffee everytime. Unless you're weighing each shot with the precision, you rely on eyeballing the amount of coffee each time.

Consistency and the ability to adjust what your output is is the key to improving your coffees :)

        • +1

          @rbrownja23:

I was having issues with grind volumes with the smart grinder, then someone linked this video on coffeesnobs:
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSHhXNL5oFo

Probably not textbook but seeing as it's physically fill then tamp down to the line it's easy to do it every time and just worry about adjusting the grind as required.

    • You can use preground coffee in the BES920 is you really have too. It comes with single and double dual wall pressurized baskets. You will however get much better results using the single wall non-pressurized baskets and a good grinder. You will be wasting your money buying this machine without a good grinder, as Powershopz suggested in another comment. Go for a good value burr grinder like Sunbeam EM0480 (or others in this range), or the Breville Smart Pro. You can get a proper commercial grinder like Mazzer, but for home use it is overkill (still very nice though). I've had a Sunbean EM0480 for about 8 years I think - great grinder.

Make sure you buy fresh beans, avoid supermarket packs with "roasted on" dates more than a month old. I buy beans direct from a commercial roaster. If you can find a roaster who sells to the public, this is the best option.

  • If I want still rocking my EM7000 from ozbargain I would jump on this.

    • I too got that Sunbeam EM7000 for $399 from HN, over 2yrs ago. But I’m thinking it’ll be out of warranty now, and while it is still the current model out there for this series, still be able to get a reasonable price for it, 2nd hand. It has been a great machine, but it may burst a pipe soon, or something.

So selling it second hand is also another price reduction of this Breville.

My Sunbeam paid off itself…use to buy store coffee twice a day, to almost once a week now. Probably a saving of over $2000 over that time

I wanted this, but it was too expensive at the time.

      • I got the 5 year extended on my em7000 for $50. Wonder if it is transferable if I sell it…

    • Same. This is a cracker of a deal for a dual boiler. My $399 EM7000 hasn't skipped a beat doing at least 2 coffees a day for the last couple of years, but I've still got 3 years left on my $50 5 year replacement warranty that I intend to make the most of.

If I was in the market for a new machine I wouldn't hesitate to snap one of these up.

      • I have this Breville on order….and plan to negotiate a lower extended 5yr warrantee when it’s ready to pick up (I feel these types of coffee machines are more likely to break due to their complexity, then most other kitchen devices). According to HN’s website, the warrantee is transferable.

        So maybe it is transferable

    • same here … got the EM7000, but those demonic voices in my keep keep saying "buy the breville and enjoy, the horsemen of the apocalypse have been held up in quarantine by Barnaby Joyce …. you have plenty of time to get the most out of the breville"

  • +1

I would love to have a coffee machine but I get so confused with them all and don't want to buy the wrong one

    • The sky's the limit.
You need to grind your own or buy pre-grounded coffee for the 'proper' coffee machines. It will taste just like a cafe would, if u do it right.

The nepressos are easy as u only need to purchase the capsules. It will taste better than instant coffee.

Depends on how much time/money u have.

We should all shout you one so you can stay up more posting bargains from the caffeine
      Win win for all

    • I'd shout you a coffee any day trent. You've saved me heaps. Thanks!

  • Cashback has to be by the 1.5.16 in checkout? Have they changed it?
Someone said it was the end of May.

If it doesnt come for a week does this mean i miss out on cashback?

EDIT nevermind i read the sale price promotion date end

I'm a bit bored of my gaggia classic and feel like selling it for second hand and going back to pour over and aeropress, coffee isn't that big a deal to warrant a big purchase - Just saying for anyone wondering, you can make good coffee with pour over if you don't care too much about espresso.

    • +1

Yeah but gaggia classic is only single boiler. Ive got bored of mine because you have to wait 5mins + for steam, then to pull the shot etc = tiring.
But the Breville is a double boiler (read faster) and as its often compared to and beats the Rancillios even with PIDs (single boiler) let alone gaggias.

Will be selling my modded gaggia classic for the Breville, easy choice at this price!

Aeropress is good too be it fiddly and pour over for a decent setup is gonna get you close to the Breville and is way more time consuming.

Picked up the Nespresso for the wife - she'll be happy.

She doesn't need to know about the cash back, though.

6 x Breville 920's LEFT at Woodville, SA. Get in quick! HN are unable to order more at this price from suppliers! Once stock is gone - that's it! Unbeatable Price!

  • For those talking about Grinders - The Breville smart grinder is ok but from what i remember lacks finer grinder tweaking to get those perfect shots.

Alternatively have a look at the Baratza virtuoso preciso if they still make it? For around $300 is/ was one of the best domestic grinders around. Even beats a few of the small to medium Mazzer grinders

Indepth review here on grind quality etc http://coffeegeek.com/proreviews/quickshot/baratzavirtuosopr…

    • The upper burr can be further adjusted for a finer grind (manually) but mine is still sitting in its box waiting for action.

  • just price matched the nespresso at jb hifi in Hurstville. didn't have red but the guy gave me the chrome model bec600mc. last one in Stock there.

  • Got one. Even though the website said it was out of stock. They had two available.

Picked up my $10 nikon Wi-Fi adaptor too.

    Cheers Trent

  • Where would you guys buy the beans and how much it cost? How long before it loses its flavor?

Also what's the cost per cup?

    Thx

    • Hi mate depends on allot of factors. Where are you located?

Best is to find your favourite local cafe and find out what beans they use. Some will sell them 250g/ 1kg bags and sometimes will even grind them for you if you ask (which is one way to sorta get around not having a grinder.)

I think Sydney prices average is about $11/250g but ive never bought online so may be cheaper.

Flavour again depends on type of beans. Is it single origion ( good for black coffees ) or is it a blend ( good for milk based coffees )
On average beans last 2 weeks ( longer if kept in freezer, some will say otherwise )

Beans taste best 1 week after roasting, too fresh and they can taste ashy

Keep an eye out for posts from Manna Beans & Sweet Yarra Coffee

  • It's super cheap! Anyone able to get price match from TGG and Bing Lee?

    • Good thought but I don't believe they sell the machine and grinder separately

    • I checked at jbi & they don't sell separately.

    • no, TGG have it as a grinder bundle ….. different SKU so no price match.

I'm waiting for the Oracle Espresso Coffee Machine BES980 to go 1/2 price or under $1000.

  • Thank you and curse you Trent86 :-)

I didn't need this machine but dam, at that price I bought it. Seriously though, thanks for the post, great price for a good machine. My Sunbeam 6910 has maybe a year left in it so that now becomes my backup machine in case this breaks down.

Bought the 6910 second hand many years ago and it's still going strong but there is some corrosion. I will be happy if this machine lasts half the time as the Sunbeam has.

    Charles.

  • Hey guys, picked one up and it seems like the machine is second hand. Has scratches/marks in various places and the tank has some deposits in the valve that connects to the machine. Would I be able to return it based on this?

    • Of course!

      • How can I prove that it wasn't my doing?

        • +1

Just take it back ASAP and they'll refund. You may not get another though based on lack of stock.

  • +1

I don't even drink coffee, I must close this page before I regret it

  • +3

Thanks OP! Picked one up today. That's a great price. The Breville Smart Grinder was included for me. They had problems getting it to scan in (probably because the grinder ISN'T supposed to be included). The guy assured me it was when I asked. I wasn't going to argue! Now I have 2 grinders…

Thanks irate for uploading your receipt! Also got the 4 year product care for $99.

    • wow, where is this HN? :)

    • I would like to find out too! :D Did the grinder show up on the receipt as well?

    • +2

Any chance you can upload the receipt mate?

    • mate about to get one, can you upload the receipt

      • See my comment below. Sorry it's probably too late for you now! If it's any consolation I highly doubt anyone else got this deal…

    • Whaaaaaa?

You got SUPER lucky. The staff member has messed up, there!

    • Is this real?
      Sounds unlikely

    • Hey ozbargain fam. Sorry for taking all day to get this to you. A man's gotta work!

      Receipt: http://tinypic.com/r/2hogwe8/9

I've removed the store from the picture because I don't want the sales guy to get in trouble. It's in Brisbane… PM me if you really want to know which store it was.

EDIT: For anyone really desperate it could be worth trying to get a price match at Good Guys?

      • looks like you got the grinder as a separate item and the machine is $100 more than advertised here?

GG wont match because the Standalone machine package is EOL. They only sell the combo duo package BEP920 now at all retailers

        • $100 more

That includes the 4 year product care. I reckon phenomenomenom got the best deal by far amongst us all. $898 with grinder and PC on the machine.

    • +1

Loving this machine. It's so much better than I expected for the price. On my 9th attempt I finally pulled a good shot. You can definitely make a fantastic coffee on this and, as with most decent machines, the user is the limiting factor!

It looks neat and just fits under most kitchen cupboards. As long as you keep the water tank full it's also reasonably quiet. I will be upgrading the portafilter baskets asap. The double shot basket is alright but the single shot one sucks.

For everyone talking about using pre-ground beans or super cheap grinders, you should probably know that the quality of the grinds is one of the single biggest factors in making a good espresso! It's worth investing in if you're after good coffee.

  • I would not worry about stock, two HN have told me they are getting heaps of stock in 5-7 days. Can pay in full or put deposit down to secure one.

    • Nice! Was worried when I saw a majority were out of stock.

Any chance you could share which HN they were?

      I'm located in VIC.

      • +1

HN Springvale were happy to take payment and order it in. They indicated that it could be a 2 week wait.

        • +1

Thanks Huzz, will try my local HN to see if they can get an order in.

        • +1

I actually ended up buying at HN Dandenong. They had one left in stock - lucky me!

        • +1

@Huzz: eventually got the last one in stock at HN Richmond. High Five!

  • +3

Many thanks to the OP for finding this. I was very close to jumping on the recent 15% off Ebay Bing Lee deal, but did not. This one was too good to pass up. I bought the last one from HN Dandenong, apologies to those who missed out getting one for the weekend. They also sold me the Smart Grinder Pro for $229 (I want the most fuss free solution now). I think most Melbourne stores have sold out by now.

HN Springvale were happy to take payment at $799 and order it in if I did not get one elsewhere. Other stores would likely do the same, but you will have to wait for the machine.

I have used my parents BES900 (the model before the BES920) many times. Having twin boilers makes preparing multiple cups a pleasure. I have been using a single boiler machine (Nemox Fenice) for about 12 years, combined with a Sunbeam EM0480 grinder. This combination still makes superb coffee, but nowhere near as easy as the BES920. The BES920 makes equal (if not better) espresso than my Nemox, better milk texturing, and the ability to texture milk and pull a shot simultaneously is something I have been looking forward to for years.

    Thanks OP!

    • Hey Huzz, been playing around with the grinder settings, can't get it right. Went through a whole bag of beans! Can you post your settings so I can try?

      • Hi ichung, I've been tuning the new machinery over the weekend so I've arrived at some settings which are pretty close. The Breville grinder user manual suggests starting at grind setting 12 for espresso. Your settings will depend totally on your beans, I have found that between 11 and 12 for my beans is best, and they are only 3 weeks old since roasted. Typically supermarket beans will need a finer grind (I've used Vittoria beans (very ordinary) before when I ran out of beans one weekend, and had to reduce the grind by 3 clicks on my Sunbeam grinder). For best results, put a full 21 grams of coffee in the double basket (make sure you are using the non pressurized basket). The grind time needs to be about 20-21 seconds. You will need to pause with about 8 seconds left on the grind timer, quickly tap down the grinds (by tapping the portafilter on the bench), then put it back in the grinder and resume. You need to to this within 10 seconds or the grinder timer will reset. When you tamp use about 15kg of force (push down on some bathroom scales), and then trim the grinds with the razor tool included. It is a balancing act, grind size, amount of coffee and tamp pressure all effect extraction. Although tamp pressure is not super critical, it has to be sufficient to remove any voids which will open up under water pressure. The tamp pressure will effect how much excess grinds you will trim off using the razor tool though. Do a full 30 second extraction, aim for about 60ml of espresso at a pressure of 7-9 bar. If the pressure is sitting on 9 bar, it is being blown off by the pressure relief valve rather than controlled with the coffee grounds. If sitting around 8 bar, you know the pressure is controlled by the coffee. I've achieved the best taste around 8 bar.

There is lots of info at coffeegeek or coffeesnobs to help out also. Hope it goes well for you. I've been loving the coffee so far.

        • Awesome, thanks so much for that info. Will play more when I get a chance.

        • Oh, what burr setting do you have yours on?

        • @ichung1979: I did not change that from factory, I assume you mean the plastic collar on top of the upper burr which can be adjusted after removing the small metal handle. I had a look, and I think it was on 6. If you have really old dry beans you may need to adjust this, but I left it alone. If you have removed this, I would check that it is locked in correctly.

  • Plenty of stock at Jooondalup WA.

    • Says out of stock at all stores except Osborne Park and Armadale on the website? Good job I reserved one

      • their online stock checker must be wrong. I went into the Joondalup store yesterday just before they closed and there was plenty of stock on the floor.I counted about 10 boxes.
