I am after the nighhawk X6. Any deals? Rep? fellow ozb?

  • Can someone tell me with the iOS app, can I turn off Internet just for my sons device when I need to? So not a specific daily timing but just turning off his internet instantly using the app and turning it on instantly while keeping Internet on for all other devices

I trust this is a good router

we someone manage to break one a year

maybe because its left on 24/7/365

    • +1

I think every person on earth leaves there modem/router on 24/7/365, so that's no excuse for it to break

    • had our since they first came out at least 18-24 months ago - its been left on 24/7.
(well occasionally I turn it off when we go on a holiday, if I remember)

  • I have a TPLink W8960N modem which is having issues with wifi (frequent dropouts/unstable wireless connection)… I was thinking about buying a Archer C9 wireless router to use with my w8960n (in bridge mode)…Would the separate modem and router combination perform better than a 2-in-1 modem like the D7? Please help.

Would the separate modem and router combination perform better than a 2-in-1 modem like the D7?

Only if you need the additional features provided by a better (more expensive) router.
If you were happy with W8960N, then the D7 provides extra features: wireless AC, Dual band, Gigabit ethernet ports, and 2x USB 2.0 ports.
If you go with C9, then you'll get slightly faster speed on 2.4GHz band, Beamforming, and USB 3.0 + 2.0 ports.

      • Thanks for your advice. So C9 is faster than D7, but what about stability? I am hoping separate modem plus wireless router will be more stable due to better ventilation/ less interference?

        • +1

When I say faster, I'm referring to theoretical speeds (up to 450+1300Mbps = AC1750 for D7 -vs- up to 600+1300Mbps = AC1900 for C9). Of course to get the most out of the speeds, your devices (PCs, tablets, mobiles) need to have matching WiFi cards. In real life, internet speed will likely be the bottleneck.

For an average home network, I don't think there'd be any difference in stability (it would be different in a small business environment under heavy load). The W8960N is an entry level unit. The problems you're having with it may be due to load (too many connected devices), a fault, or bugs in the firmware (make sure you have the latest firmware).

        • Thanks mate. If stability is similar for home network I think I will go with the all-in-one solution as it also saves space and maybe cheaper to run (use less electricity).

  • I was going to get a d7 after researching for 149 at msy but i found a c8 brand new on ebay for same price. D models are for adsl modem aswell as a router, c models are just routers i think

  • Are there better modem routers out there around or slighter higher price range or is this the best one ?

    • There are better modem routers but at a much higher price, ie $200+

      • which ones?

        • +1

Despends what features you're looking for.
          TPLink Archer D9 obviously.

Draytek Vigor are the cream of the consumer grade stuff.
          ASUS DSL-AC68U mentioned above
          Some would argue the Fritzbox

        • @scubacoles:

Yep, I recently purchased the router version of ASUS DSL-AC68U 15% off eBay Kogan sale. After all the research, I believe it's the best you can buy for the price, plus support for custom firmware.

        • @justmiike:
          And FttN compatibility..

      Glad we could help :)

  • Be careful with this router - I've had a whole range of issues with my D7 (dropouts, not holding connection etc…), hopefully resolved with the latest firmware update.

    • maybe its your line or you have a faulty modem. a few people including me have commented that they have had no problems.

      • +1

Definitely not my line or a faulty modem. After a lot of troubleshooting myself managed to fix it, now holding a stable wireless connection on 5ghz. Extensive thread on whirlpool about it
