  • Thanks OP.

  • Good stuff, thanks OP.

Does anyone know the minimum amount of points you can transfer?

    • Each bank are different. Some are minimum 5,000 points.

  • +4

    Commonwealth bank not included? :(

    • We should've transferred in November 2015 when they were…

      • now all we need is a time machine….

  • At least Citi is included this time

    • but we just lost ~25% value in march ..
      if i read it correctly

What were the changes to Citi Rewards in March?

Citi implemented a 25%(ish) cut to the value of transfers to Velocity and KrisFlyer across all cards in the Citi Rewards program. They were one of the first banks to announce changes to their rewards program for 2016, and some other banks have not yet announced changes which makes it hard to do an effective comparison across rewards programs.

Put simply, Citi’s changes reduced the effective earn rates from spend for airline points of their cards, primarily for the Citi Signature and Citi Prestige Visas.

Correct. They just made points more worthless compared to velocity point 2.5 per velocity point and 25000 point min transfer as well. Sucks but it's free for life so can't complain

    Westpac either ?

  • Thanks for the reminder

    My google result:-
People also ask, "Do Virgin frequent flyer points expire?"
"Both Qantas Frequent Flyer and Virgin Velocity Rewards don't expire points, as long as you earn or redeem points within a certain period — 18 months for Qantas and 36 months for Velocity. Verdict: That's a slight advantage for Virgin, but we'll call it a draw."
I have tried redeeming for both airlines, and in my opinion Virgin wins!!
    Thanks OP!!

Firstly, from 1 June 2016 your Velocity Points will not expire provided you earn or redeem Points at least once every 24 months. Previously, the expiry period was 36 months. Any Points earned from eligible activity prior to 1 June 2016 are not affected by this change and will not expire for 36 months.

      • -1

also worth pointing out that family pooling/transferring points (i think 1000 is the minimum) is considered activity

        • +2

Not after 1st June unfortunately - from the Velocity Ts & Cs:

          Account Activity

          (a) Prior to 1 June 2016, Account Activity means, in relation to a Membership Account, earning or redeeming Points, transferring Points to or from their Membership Account using Points Transfer – Airlines, purchasing Points using Velocity Points Booster, transferring Points to or from an Eligible Family Member or participating (as a Contributing Account or Beneficiary Account) in a Family Pool; and

          (b) From 1 June 2016, Account Activity means, in relation to a Membership Account, earning or redeeming Points, transferring Points to or from their Membership Account using Points Transfer – Airlines, or purchasing Points using Velocity Points Booster, but excludes transferring Points to or from an Eligible Family Member or participating in a Family Pool.

          @SimbaGirl:

Oh, thanks! I guess you could buy 500 points for $18 to keep it rolling then…

        • +2

@nickyd84: Or just buy something small from Ebay (just make sure you click through from the Velocity eStore first) and that would keep it going.

      • +1

You can just purchase petrol at a BP and use you Velocity Card first to claim points. Only have to do it once every 36 Months…

    • Virgin is miles ahead of Qantas for redemptions.

  • hmm
    not for WBC or CBA?!

    • How about WTF?

    • Got an official reply

      "Dear Mr XXXX

Thank you for your enquiry with regard to our recent Points transfer promotion.

Upon review of the promotion Terms and Conditions; I can confirm that CBA and Westpac are not participating partners for this specific promotion. ………"

    • CBA now only seem to participate in half of these Velocity bonus offers (i.e. every second one), and I think Westpac's the same.

  • Is Diners always included in these offers? My corporate card is Diners and I've been holding out on transferring for a while and only recently realised Velocity was a partner.

Disappointed with lack of CBA though, I got a whole bank of points I've been waiting for an offer like this before transferring them over.

  • Hi. I was thinking is t better to transfer from HSBC card to Kris flyer and then to velocity? Transfer to KrisFlyer is 1:1 so 1000 HSBC points is 1000 KrisFlyer points and 1000 KrisFlyer points is 741 velocity points

Compare this to going from 1000 HSBC points to 500 +15 % is 575 velocity points

    • Your calculation is correct.

Samething from anz rewards, better transfer to velocity and then to KF miles ( you earn more ).

  • Wasn't this deal 25 percent before? Guess I should just hang out for that.

    • Always 15%. I never see 25%

      • Sorry bad

        Here’s the offer history:

        May 2016: 15% transfer bonus
        November 2015: 15% transfer bonus
        May 2015: 15% transfer bonus, 15% discount
        November 2014: 15% transfer bonus
        May 2014: 10% transfer bonus, 10% discount
        October 2013: 15% transfer bonus, 15% discount
        April 2013: 15% transfer bonus
        October 2012: 15% transfer bonus
February 2012: 30% discount on domestic redemptions
        September 2011: 20% bonus

Do this with caution for AMEX card holder

If you also mainly use points to get supermarket/petrol gift card (we all go to supermarket/petrol station, do we?). To get $50 gift card:
    * You need 6750 AMEX reward points
    * You need 9000 Velocity reward points

Plus, AMEX gives you the option to exchange reward points for real credit money. For example, $50 for 8000 points. That is why I never transfer my AMEX points.

Maybe other ozbargainers can give some other good reason why we want to transfer?

    • +2

"Maybe other ozbargainers can give some other good reason why we want to transfer?"

Ozbargainers who are planning to fly with Virgin Australia (or Tiger)?

      • Could we use velocity points for Tiger? I find Virgin is always more expensive.
Never use points for flight, is it more worthwhile than getting giftcards?

        • +2

Never use points for flight, is it more worthwhile than getting giftcards?

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.

What you really have to do is compare how much VALUE your points will get:

Let's say, X points buys you a $100 gift card at Woolies. However, with X points you can also book a flight to somewhere.
Then ask yourself, "how much would I be paying for the trip from my own pocket if I didn't have the points?" If the answer is greater than $100, then your points would be better spend on the flight as opposed to the gift card - because in this case your points are buying you more VALUE.

I've used my Velocity points recently on a return to the UK with Etihad, make sure you include the partners on the searches! It was much better than Virgin.

        • @nickyd84:
How can you include partners airlines on VirginAust flight booking search?

          Tx

        • @eecchhoo:

There's a tick box on the top right if I recall, 'include partner airlines' I think it's called

This combined with the ANZ Rewards Black bonus 75,000 anz points on signup - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/244923 - translates to 43,125 velocity points.

    • Just get a NAB premium and get 60k points directly on sign up.

      • Are you talking about this deal that has a $250 annual fee?

        • That's QF. The Velocity is 60k sign up.

    • How long did it take you to receive it? I'm still waiting - I crossed the threshold $s but am still within the 3 month timeline for the offer.

      • Signed up last night to add to my 80000 from the amex referral deal.

  • No deal for Amex membership rewards…

    • My Amex is straight Velocity points earn, but I have a BoQ Visa I will transfer points from at end of May.

    • Why so?

      • Because if I wait until the END of May, I will get 15% bonus on more points than what I have at the start of May. Or are you asking why I have a BoQ Visa when I have a much higher points earner in the Amex - due to places not taking Amex.

        • Sorry, I was replying to quasims. :)

        • @mpratty10:

Because IMO Membership rewards generally worths more than Velocity for shopping etc.

Why would you want to downgrade your accumulated reward points… moreover, Virgin is no longer a budget airline (unlike Jetstar).

        • Doesn't matter. As long as you reach (or keep) the minimum points for transfer before the end of May you can do another transfer.

  • Anyone who's done this before - how long did it take before the points transferred from ANZ to Velocity?

    • Assuming you did during business hours - takes about 1-2 workings days.

  • +1

On 4 May I did a Membership Rewards Points Transfer of 33,000 from my AMEX Platinum Charge card to my Virgin Velocity account, and I received a 25% bonus of 8250.

    • Nice I don't have that many points to transfer but still worth it

  • Extended till 7th June now for Amex people.
