Synology make some of the best NAS units, great price and great unit.

Interesting because it allows real expansion (RAID with the expansion unit, rather than just JBOD), unlike the 4-series NAS I have.

Unfortunately, the expansion unit will still set you back $500, apparently, per Google.

    • Yeah, I did notice that, but the 2-Bay expansion is a bit more affordable and may be suitable for home users.

  • There was just one available with them, no more stock left :( I really wanted this. Anyways, Nice Find indeed.

    • Did you call them? I can still add to a cart and go through the checkout process online?
If that is the case I'll mark it as expired…

      • Yeah, it can still allow you to add to cart, but when I called them they said they had just one available and now even if some one pays online, their money will be refunded in 3-4 business days. Dont think other stores can do price match on this.

        • Ah ok, well hopefully if that is the case I will still get my order. Will mark it as expired, thanks.

Great OS - although for the price there are higher spec/faster hardware options available in other brands.

Bang for buck, I reckon you canot go past the HP Gen8 microserver, regularly sold for $260 - $290 delivered, which runs the Synology NAS OS very well via an XPEnology bootable USB stick.

You get the same Synology OS but much faster CPU (and upgradeable), same 2GB ram but expandable to 16GB, double the 3.5" HDD bays, plus extra 2.5" storage too.

Plus the option to install virtualisation software, where you can still run Synology in a VM plus also run Windows or linux servers etc as well.

And its still tiny.. a cube around 25cm on each side.
