Hoping the G5 will drop to $370 in 10 months time, like the G4! :)

    • +1

      One can dream =)

    • +16

the G5 will probably make history as LG's flagship quickest drop in price

      • Why do you say that? The G4 retailed at the around the same price at $929. http://www.cnet.com/au/news/lg-g4-australian-pricing-and-ava…

        • the device was mixed lukewarm reception, other than the upgraded Soc the predecessors had many areas outdone, good for bargain later in the year.

      • +9

g5 is a train wreck. havent seen any review that is very positive about it, seems to always max out at "decent device, great camera and prop to lg for doing something differently"

        • +1

Disappointing to hear but yes, it is true. HTC 10 looks to be a tough contender to all flagships this year.

        • thoughts on the Huawei P9?

I think out of all the LG 'G' series, the one that was done the best was the LG G2. A shame about the lack of SD card though.

        • @TheOneWhoKnocks: Except on price.

        • +1

It's a shame really. I've had every LG since the 4XHD and always liked their angle compared to the competition, but the G5 is very hard to get excited about.

Holding out for a good price on a V10 however. :)

        • +2

@scrimshaw: not worth it for the price imo. huawei uses its own soc which means app support can be limited

        • +1

I think one of the features people have a problem with is reduced size and a completely different look to the G4- some went as far as calling the G5 ugly! I personally think the G5 looks sleek, sexy and more 'uni sex' (if that makes any sense). The G4 was too square and bulky looking, it should come with "warning: sharp corners" stickers.

The slightly smaller screen G5 should fit nicely into small hands.

        • @volturee: Isn't Kirin 955 based on A72 and A53 combo though? I thought app support was more of an "architecture" issues (i.e. With x86, I've seen some people complaining about some apps acting strangely). Then again, many games in my opinion are optimised for Adreno, the one that's used more by manufacturers in a way since Snapdragon is used by more manufacturers, so maybe you're correct.

        • @Oversimplified: you are absolutely correct about the architecture being the main concern with app compatibility . i just hate it when im the only 1 having the weird glitches and the developers would, understandably, refuse to fix it since im using non-standard hardware. it's definitely far-fetched but annoying nonetheless when it happens

        • @volturee: Isn't Kyro and Moongoose less "conventional" then A72 though, since it's a custom core design? I guess this is more of a "less user base means less people complain about the same problem thing".

        • @Oversimplified: u arent as oversimplified as your username suggests eh :). i havent dug that deep into the kirin soc but its fairly obvious to see that the number of users on same obscure hw using the same app, that would even attempt to report the problems are too insignificant to command the dev's attention

    • +1

The G5's build quality is so bad for a flagship phone…was so disappointed because it looked really good on paper. Now the HTC10 looks awesome…hopefully they can deliver in full.

      • +1

        Do you own one?

        • No I don't own one, and nor do i want to. Look at the reviews from channels like detroitborg. Half the phone doesn't even connect together flush. And the fact that they've used some sort of anodised aluminium paint to hide the antennas on the back of the phone makes them visible.

        • @spaghettiman:

After watching the review you mentioned, it does appear the build quality isn't the best, shame LG.

    • -1

In 10 months time you'll want something else.

    • $370 is possible. Doesn't look like a good seller right now

    • -1

You obviously have nil knowledge about saving money.. Maybe you should even be banned from posting here lol

      • That's a bit harsh

Case in point: I wanted Telstra network with 5gig data or more and lots of calls for a business phone. Plan is about 90/month

Buying a phone outright and on BYO is a similar price bracket for my requirements once you break it down to per month costs

Also, I can much easier claim a regular plan bill on my tax than a month to month byo plan that doesn't provide a statement

        • Get an outright phone, and get $40 unlimited Boost prepaid. Print out and keep record of your monthy payment - the receipts would have your phone nunber on them too. I can't see why you have problem using them for tax purposes, unless you want to claim back GST.

        • +1

          @hluu0111:

          100/month for iPhone = 2400 over 2 years.

Received 200 welcome credit + 12 months Apple Music. Further 200 valued customer credit. That's about 500 off over 24 months. Total outlay is now 1900.

Then I can claim 50% of my phone bill off tax

The higher the initial cost of the plan per month, the more effective your tax savings.

          100/2 x0.4 = 20/month discount or 480 over 2 years

Total cost is then 1420 for 2 years or 60/month for top tier Telstra plan and new at the time 64gb iPhone 6

With an outright iPhone at about 1000, that's about 42/month for 24 months

With tax discount on boost, you can only factor the cost of the plan being 40/month

          40/2 x0.4 = 8/month discount

So all up its the same as paying 90/month if you go outright

          TLDR:
With flagship phones costing so much outright, if you play your cards right on a plan, you come out miles ahead

    • So how would you suggest we obtain a phone?

      • If he was referring to new release phones his post makes sense i.e. lg g4 $900—>$400 in less than a year. Kind of makes sense to buy just one generation behind current releases outright, upgrade every year sell the old one for $200 and then you perpetually have a current phone for $200/yr

    • Especially with the minor at best spec bumps we get these days…

(As someone who used to be a serial updater)

  • Didnt jack up price did they? Maybe worth waiting for 20% one?

    • -1

Don't think that's the case for Nexus 5X, haven't seen the 32GB version anywhere near this low before, absolute bargain

      • +3

Would of jumped on the 5x if it wasnt for the lack of band 28

        • +1

Dangit, thanks for that, was just about to buy it. Really poor from kogan not to mention the model number.

        • Thanks, have updated listing.

        • Do I need Band 28 if I am on Vodafone?

        • -1
        • @Freeslave_44:

Band 28 doesn't matter for Vodafone, but it's missing band 5 (850Mhz) LTE that Vodafone uses for metro coverage.

          Hong Kong:
          GSM/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900MHz
          UMTS/WCDMA: B1/2/5/8
          TDS-CDMA: B34/39
          LTE (FDD): B1/3/7/8/26
          LTE (TDD): B38/39/40/41
          LTE CA DL: B1-B3, B3-B3, B3-B7, B3-B8, B39-B41, B41C-B41C

        • @StrayfireX: Really? So not ideal even for Voda? Any other recommended phone in the price/spec range?

        • @Freeslave_44:

Not having that Band 5 is pretty detrimental to Vodafone 4G because they only have LTE on two frequencies.

The international H971 version of the Nexus 5X would be fine.
It's only a matter of time before it reaches this price :).

  • Ahhh, just ordered nexus 5x 16GB this morning from kogan for $405 inc. shipping.
Is there much messing around to cancel and reorder?

    • call them ASAP, they should be able to adjust or either cancel it

    • +1

Did u order it through kogan ebay or kogan online?
Its easier to get refund through ebay directly as from Kogan.
I forgot to use 20% promotion code while purchasing through kogan ebay. Very next second i asked them to cancel the order but they sent me the item saying too late as the product has been shipped already.
I spoke with ebay customer support and they after a week or so returned me the 20% code value.

  • +1

Nice deal on Nexus 5X, thanks. Would be useful to put model number in heading though. Assuming it is H798 without band 28 (700).

  • The nexus 5x works with all 4g network?

    • +1

This is the Asian model that doesn't work on Band 28 (700mhz) - which I know at least Telstra 4G uses in some areas.

If this deal was for the Global model, I'd be all over it!

      • Would it works on virginmobile?

        • It will work, but I'd want something with Band28 as Optus and Telstra both use it on their 4G networks.

        • @CLoSeR:

then thats good enough for me. my iphone 5 currently using band 3. Cant resist not to buy the nexus. haha

      • +1

        Optus also 700mhz

  • +5

It amazes me how much people will pay for a flagship phone when it first comes out. Can the price really be justified?

    • +1

I agree. though disposable income got a lot to do with this. also there's the 'want' mentality, dont tell me u never see something that makes u go 'damn I want that so badly i gotta have it now'

      • +4

Yeah, cake usually gives me that feeling.

  • Just got a s7 for my sister
760 decent price for the phone!

    • +1

      which model number comes up?

      is it SD820 or Exynos?

Cant find out 100% but I think it should be the SD820

      • +1

820, it's shown in the specs

        • +1

hmm so no good for us Aussies?

        • +1

          @mookill:
From the specs in the listing it looks like 700mhz 4G isn't supported, in that case you'd still be able to use it but get worse 4G reception and possibly speed too.

        • @mookill: How come it is no good? I am looking to buy an S7 and this price is great but I don't want to buy it and have issues with it.

        • +1

@mdogxxx: Battery life isn't as good as the Exynos version plus it's inferior to the aforementioned version in the majority of tests.

        • @ChillBro: Doesn't it depend on what the benchmark tests test? I do remember GPU on Snapdragon 820 was better (to an extent where people were complaining about the difference in GPU performance).

Plus, if you want to root the phone and put custom ROMs on your device, Snapdragon tend to be better than Exynos. Galaxy S6 still doesn't have an AOSP based ROM that can be used as a daily driver (as far as I know at least, CM 13 is still unstable as far as I know).

  • +1

Awesome price on the 5X. Even it lacks the B28, $100 price difference easily makes up for it.

    • +1

My thoughts exactly. If you need the bands, then pay more for global/Australian stock.

    • Phone supports Band 8 (900MHz) so when Telstra switches off 2G (and uses for 4G) this should be pretty good?

      • +1

I think its existing 4G bands are good enough. You wouldn't lose anything

        • True, my current iPhone 5s connects well on 4G to Band 3 (1800) on Telstra. Fast enough I guess, 4GX will have to wait until the next phone… I will buy it..

        • My phone only has Band 3/8 on Telstra and it's pretty good in North Shore/Inner City.

  • +1

I use telstra and am looking to get a Nexus 5x.
    Do i still get 4G without band 28 ?

    • In some areas you'll get full 4G coverage from just Band 3 (which the 5X supports). Check a Telstra coverage map of your area to know for sure.

    • Yea my phone don't have band 28 and I still get 4G in a lot of places. I think you will just miss out on 4G in more rural areas but you will still have access to 3G so it's not a bad phone really. Thinking of getting one myself but my Xperia Z is still going strong hmm…

      • You still get 4G because your phone supports 1800mhz. 700mhz (b28) is however quite important in metro areas as it's second most widely used in Australia on telstra and optus, it also comes in handy sometimes when 1800 is congested. Vodafone's equivalent is 850.

  • +1

    Not a happy about Kogan

    • Because the 5X is cheaper again? Agreed!

  • Hey guys, how long would group buy take to ship the 5X to Brisbane?
Also would the 5X be worth to get and will it last me 2-3 years?
    Thanks!

    • Depends on what you're looking for in a phone, the 5X is enough for most people but it does have an older processor (1yr), if you don't mind it then sure.

  • Thanks Op!

  • Does this band 28 issue for the nexus 5x affect people on Optus?

    • and Telstra.

      • Optus:

Optus’ release quotes David Epstein, Vice President, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs at Optus stating that “We are improving our 4G network today with 700MHz in parts of the Sydney CBD, Chatswood and Eastern Suburbs; Brisbane CBD, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts; Adelaide CBD, Melbourne CBD, Geelong, Frankston and Mornington Peninsula; plus Hobart CBD, Perth CBD, Claremont and Cottlesloe. Whether you are in Armidale or Sydney in New South Wales, Townsville or Brisbane in Queensland, Ceduna or Adelaide in South Australia, or Wangaratta or Melbourne in Victoria, with the right device Optus 4G will have you covered as our network expands”

        Telstra:

As of early 2015 Telstra will be launching their 4G network expansion which includes two additional carrier frequencies - 700MHz and 2600MHz, on top of their existing 1800MHz network. The expansion, coined 4GX, will provide significantly more capacity, meaning less congestion and faster average speeds. Using Carrier Aggregation the 4GX network will also allow compatible 4G modems to operate on all three frequencies at once, increasing maximum peak speeds - theoretically as high as 300Mbps (using 3x 20MHz carriers). Currently (2015) several modems have been released permitting carrier aggregation on two carriers, permitting data rates up to 200Mbps. It's important to note that currently both carriers must be transmitted from the same base station - it is not possible to pick up 700MHz B28 from one base station and aggregate with an 1800 or 2600MHz band from another base station.

    I love HTC 10

  • +1

FFS I just got the 5x for a month and they dropped it another 100 bucks..

Experience with Kogan, no problem, fast shipping by Toll.

Experience with phone, very nice, couldn't ask for more of a phone that costed only 430 bucks (now 330)
though it could do better with another Gb of RAM. 2Gb is just a touch short sometimes.
I've been an Apple user for sometimes, switching to Android for fun, not disappointed.

  • +2

Kogan just put up the S7 Edge so have added it to deal :)

  • Any knows what bands are currently supported by these S7 edge?
