Dell XPS 15 Laptop, 16GB/512 SSD/ 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) Display - $2548 @ JB Hi-Fi

790

First time poster- was looking for an ultra book and came upon this deal. This is a high end XPS with i7, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD, 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) touchscreen display. JBHFi currently have a 15% off on some laptops and this drops the price down from 2999 to 2548- which is the same as the entry level XPS 15 on the dell website. JB are also offering an additional 1.5 years of JBHIFI warranty on top of the 1 year offered by Dell( not sure if this is actually worthwhile).

Edit: forgot to mention the dedicated graphics card ( it's not the greatest but still).

In my opinion a good deal for those looking at XPS 15

  • The display is actually 15.6" 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160).

The Dell Xps 13 with Iris graphics is ~$2100

  • And don't forget to stack with JB gift cards from Woolies using 5% off ww gift cards.

    • I have a Big W gift card that I bought with a 10% discount. Am I able to buy a JB gift card in Big W with the Big W gift card, thereby getting 10% off at JB HI-FI?

      • I had no problems buying JB gift cards at Woolies using wish egift cards last weekend, but I don't know if the conditions on the big w only gift cards are different.
Check the discussion from the recent JB Nexus 5x sale. From memory there was some discussion there about buying JB gift cards from big w there.

    • So a $100 gift card would cost me $95? or is it the other way around. $100 gift card will give me $105.

      • +1

Step 1. You can buy a $100 wish gift card that is valid across the woolworths group for $95 from Pricepal, Cashrewards, NRMA, entertainment book, & heaps more places - note it can take a few hours or a couple of days.
        2. Use the wish card to buy JB gift cards at Woolworths, Big W etc at full face value.
        3. Then use the JB cards to shop at JB as normal.

I did exactly this to save $1.50 off a $30 purchase at JB last weekend, so don't see why it shouldn't work on a larger purchase.

They're all gaming laptops and do not compare to the Dell XPS 15 in terms of R&D, reliability, features and build quality.

    • That's a matter of opinion. Better graphics cards vs this is much slimmer and lighter + better battery.

      • +4

If people wanted a gaming laptop, they wouldn't be getting this. You're talking about a different market.

The XPS15 laptop is mostly used by professionals.

Are you affiliated with that company?

        • +1

I would have to disagree… the 960M can perform pretty well in 1080p gaming! I bought a laptop with a 950m and I'm able to get 30+ FPS in the rise of the tomb raider on high settings, however suffers on Ultra settings.

        • @Vmeisterkun:

I know that, but if you bought this laptop to game with then you really should have looked at the other options out there. The 960m is a good card, but it's not what makes this laptop great. Gaming is also not the target market for this laptop.

        • No affiliation, just a bloke who likes to have options.

    • +1

The Dell warranty is pretty good. Also for different people really. This is a 14 inch laptop with a 15 inch screen.

If you want gaming at 1080 look elsewhere. I had the xps 15 for a month and played farcry 4 pretty well but not at a super enjoyable way. Think of it more as tolerable for people who want a laptop that has the ability to play games instead of a gaming laptop.

Ended up getting the much bigger and heavier alienware which sounds like a helicopter taking off when I play division.

  • +11

This is the ultimate laptop imo (in terms of pure versatility), and is the one laptop that could suit the biggest variety of needs.

Solid Build (CNC'd metal and carbon fibre)
2160p Display, which scales perfectly to 1080p
960m, which is great for moderate gaming @ 1080p
    512GB m.2 upgradeable SSD
    16GB RAM
    HDMI
    AC Wi-Fi
    Touchscreen
    Very light and thin

Only thing holding this back is price. Otherwise it ticks all the boxes for a lot of people.

    • +7

core i7 Quad core processor, 84 Wh battery, virtually no bezel and PCIE NVME SSD.

      • Ah crap I forgot to mention the i7, but yeah those others are awesome too. Wasn't sure if the SSD was NVMe (was assuming, but couldn't find solid info online), but yeah.

      • +3

No bezel means be very careful not to crack the screen as it would cost like a wounded bull to replace :-)

Usually a non-bezel laptop screen means that the complete lid assembly (Camera …cover… hinges.. etc) has to be replaced as it will be very difficult to replace the LED panel itself.
Normally, when this happens the owner would replace the laptop due to the overall repair cost is not viable.
Even after a few years when this laptop depreciates it's not a general screen that you see on eBay for $100.

Accidents do happen but something to consider before purchase.
        Cheers

    • Would the battery be bad due to the 4k screen?

      • +3

The answer is yes. It's also because of the touchscreen, but the GPU eats battery.

      • The whirlpool users say 7 hours on 20% brightness. This screen is the brightest screen on the market i think.

    • +1

I would just like a bit to that comment. When you buy a laptop you need to think carefully about what you want to use it for.

This laptop is good as a desktop replacement, so if you work in an office and you can plug it in or if you just leave it home all the time. If you move around a lot during the day and you have a desktop at home to run your games/serious programs then you should avoid this laptop.

Weight: 2.01kg is on the heavier side so its a hassle to carry around
15.6" is a too large for me especially since I have to move around a lot at Uni.
The screen seems to be a TN panel which is inferior to IPS (retina display in apple speak)
4k display is going to chew through your battery and windows has problems scaling the display so the text is going to be tiny.
The battery life for these kinds of laptops are usually 3-4 hours max.
You have no need for a dedicated GPU in a laptop and it reduces battery life.
16GB RAM is something you really don't need in a laptop especially if you just use it for facebook/work processing
i7 will probably be wasted if you're not doing heavy computational work
The pricetag is insanely high. I believe it is roughly equivalent to the newest Macbook Pro.
The Dell laptop series is mostly targeted towards businesses

On the plus side Dell warranty is extraordinary.
The touchscreen, if is supports a digitizer will be good for taking notes in onenote
      It has a SSD

      • +3

Wrong on a couple points. Reviews indicate a 4-5 hour battery life and the screen is an IGZO IPS panel.

      • +3

        Touchscreen doesn't support digitizer…

This laptop may have a 15.6 touchsreen but form factor is similar to 13-14" laptop.

        Screen is IPS

i7 maybe too much but it also means that the performance is still adequate at battery saver mode hence more power efficient.

Batter life 5-6 hours but I agree, its not that great

Keep in mind that the 84whr battery takes up the additional HDD slot so you are stuck with NVME M2 SSD

        • stuck with NVME M2 SSD

I'd be happy to be stuck with a $400 PCIE SSD. lol

      • +1

3-4 hour battery was true for laptops a few years ago. Current Intel laptops gently reach 4-5 hours or more.

        • Still not good enough for me- such a shame as this laptop is perfect otherwise…. GPU is the 960M btw- a very powerful card for its' size/form factor

        • @ycon: The lower specification "XPS 15 claims up to 18 hours of battery life. There are a few downgrades you need to make that happen, such as a 1080P non touch screen…"

        • +1

          @twocsies:

I've read that- tbh it seems like a ridiculous exaggeration. Even with the 84whr battery & a 1080p screen- best I'm seeing is 8 hours under normal use (half brightness). They shouldn't be allowed to advertise such an unprecedented claim

      • It's 15.6" in a 14" form factor.

      • The screen seems to be a TN panel which is inferior to IPS (retina display in apple speak)

IPS does not mean retina display. Retina display refers to pixel density. They didn't call it retina display until iPhone 4 and iPad 3. Before that, their devices still used IPS displays.

    • Very compelling argument. Was wondering if you had any thoughts on the XPS 13 (currently $2.1k)?

  • Any ideas on the additional 1.5 yrs of JBHiFi warranty?

  • +4

Awesome Laptop, I have the previous model XPS 15 9530 which is also 2160p. But one word of warning about these displays. Not all applications scale nicely at 200% on Windows 10. Visual Studio with SSDT tools, SQL Server Management studio and many other have issues.

So much so I have to scale back to 1080p at 100%, and then it still doesn't look as nice as a native 1080p LCD. So if your apps play nicely with 200% scaling then it an awesome machine. I don't know if I will be going for a 2160p laptop next time.

    • you are right mate! but just wanted to keep that trend. I used to think that 1080p is just too much for a laptop and many programmes looks awful. But they did a good job for that later in win 10.

The only issue for me I believe is the battery life. I am interesting in a Thinkpad P50 which comes with a 84wh battery too, but more m.2 slots for future upgrades. How's the keyboard? I find some dell's keyboard very uncomfortable to use.

  • +2

I know many people who got the 1080p version of this laptop. All other specs including the 84 Wh battery were the same. The battery life is a lot better.

Was $2400 during the EBAY20 sale. Good price but seen cheaper, units come in often under $2500 at Dell Outlet.

Guessing a lot would have problems with heat with the chassis and components.

Best 15" laptop deal in recent memory was the MBP from Kogan, this isn't bad but again you are paying over $2,500. I went to see one this morning, the touchpad seems very tall and keyboard looks to be a bit squished towards the screen. Someone said virtually no bezel but a lot of empty space at the bottom of the screen where the camera is.

Would love a display with no bezel whatsoever, I don't care about the inbuilt camera and don't care about Windows Hello or Skype.

    • All your points are so trivial and in no way contribute to the performance of the laptop, which after all is what matters.

The macbook pro really doesn't come close to this anyway.

A 15" macbook pro for $2500 is not a good deal considering how old the laptop and the parts it uses.

      • A 15" macbook pro for $2500 is not a good deal considering how old the laptop and the parts it uses.

Don't forget the Apple tax. Once you factor that in, it becomes a very good deal, by Apple standards.

    • Note that the US price for this device is US$1829 and they get 10% off as well. That makes the current JB Hifi price just about right. However the Dell Australia shop sells it for AUD$2999, which is a bit high. But obviously JB Hifi is able to sell at the prevailing international rate so that's fair, I suppose.

Who would you recommend this laptop to? Is this portable? As in lightweight?
Its a bit pricey. Not sure if this is for me. I usually just browse, never play games, watch some movie or YouTube. And use Microsoft Excel a lot.

    • +4

See my above comment, it ticks almost every box. But no, for your needs, you should grab a nice affordable i5 ultrabook. This is WAY overkill.

    • Buy the HP spectre x360 on the jb hifi website. It's pretty good.

    • +4

If that's all you do (like me) I wouldn't spend more than $500 on a laptop. The last one I got was $400. Does everything I need it to for personal use..

      • On point. No idea who downvoted you.

      • Cheapest laptop which has decent amount of Ram :)
some $500 with less ram not even usable in MS Excel or Youtube.

        • Thanks guys, I need ultra portable, lightweight, and long life battery laptop. 13" is sweet spot for me.

Ill have a look at that spectre.

  • -3

I have a Lenovo Yoga 900 in orange which is almost identical specced and love it :)

    • This one comes with a i7 HQ processor

    • +3

No offence, but your laptop is rubbish compared to this. lol

      Quad core CPU
      DDr4 ram
This has a 15.6" screen in a 14" form factor
Better build quality and more expensive materials (if carbon fibre is your thing)
      A dedicated Nvidia GPU
      A bigger Battery
A 4k resolution screen and larger screen
USB TYpe C with thunderbolt 3

It's funny how they're similarly priced.

  • +1

I'm as much of an upstanding PCmasterrace brother as the next user here, but is there any real point to having a 4K resolution on a little 15" laptop panel like that? Is it primarily there so you can connect to a larger screen and take advantage of the 4K resolution on something bigger?

    • +3

For me, I find that 1080p is the sweet spot.

      • +1

On a 15" laptop for sure, 4k is overkill.

    • +1

You can connect a 720 laptop to a 4k screen and it will output in 4k (as long as the GPU can support it) having a 4k laptop screen won't help in that regards.

To be frank, a 4k screen on a 15 inch laptop I would find to be a disadvantage more than an advantage. Windows sucks at scaling so everything will be tiny. If you use Windows' built in dpi scaling everything becomes blurry. I use a surface pro at work (which also has a super high res) and have gotten used to it, but I wouldn't choose it for my own computer.

    • Well the idea is you run 2160p at 200% and the display looks way better than a native 1080p display and everything is stil the same size

    • -4

1080p looks like absolute garbage at 15". The point is that it doesn't look like pixellated trash.

      • +2

Except it doesn't. 1080p with an IPS screen is beautiful on a 15" panel.

        • -2

If you think 1080p looks good at that size you have a vision problem.

        • +1

          @MrMcHairyHead:

Most 15" laptops these days are 1080p. So you're saying we all have vision problems? What does the number of pixels have to do with your vision?

        • @cDNA:

Don't worry cDNA, your trying to debate logic with a console peasant who's also an Apple fanboy. In all fairness, he's probably never seen anything running at native 1080p before.

      • Yeah, 1080p looks brilliant on a 13-15inch panel of any variety.

        • -2

          If you're legally blind, sure.

    • +1

High-res photos look fantastic on a high DPI screen. There's so much detail. It'll be great for anyone into photos.

      • I agree, the high DPI on that screen is great and its ideal for viewing photos :))))

  • when does this end?????? also do they do layby?

    • They only layby at rrp according to the guy I asked a couple months back.

    • You still haven't bought a laptop yet?

      • nope Dell keeps stuffing me around, staff is buying all the sale laptops within seconds, really annoying me its stupid.. I just tried then but some person bought all 6 of them

        • its prob not staff, I bet someone buys and puts on gumtree/ebay etc.
          but they always go quick.

        • @PVA: no he said an administrator res them. Page was up for 2 seconds and somehow it's gone. And yes people are reselling them so I'm not going for Dell anymore

  • +5

A few pointers for those considering, as it is a huge "investment".

    1. Its not that light. Well, all depends on your expectation
    2. 2.4 wifi can not be used with BT mouse, a big problem for those who hotspot
    3. My space bar is already squeeky and i havent even used it that much.
    4. 1080p model with 84wh lets me run about 10 hours, constantly on but screen off when idle past 3 minutes, wifi and BT constantly, half brightness.
    • Thanks mate. Nice to know the battery life of the 1080, 84 Wh version. It seems to vary between 7 - 10 hours between people on whirlpool.

    • +1

I'm actually using bluetooth mouse with WIFI and absolutely found no issues.

    • What are you doing to get 7-10 hours? Which applications would you be using to get that kind of time? I keep reading people complaining they can't get 5 hours from this…

      • On the 1080p version they're using 20% brightness. lol

        • I have the 4K screen with 20% brightness. after 4hrs I got 10% battery warning… Had like 3 apps open with wifi barely used. Its a great laptop, if it wasn't for some of the bugs/issues being reported. As for battery, I'm not really complaining since it's 4K screen with insanely good specs.

        • @overshopper: Was one of the apps Chrome or a webpage that burns cpu cycles? That can chew up battery life.

  • -4

This laptop has a few major issues.. if you happen to get a crappy unit… try online searches for more info. Its also a lotto draw if you get a good or bad unit. They will not replace if you get a dud.

    • +2

That's complete bullshit. I've owned Dell machines for nearly a decade, and they will always replace them immediately.

    • +1

if you get a new dell unit with the appropriate warranty they will fix it, we have never had an incident that dell has not fixed an issue even if it takes replacing the equipment, so not sure the circumstances you are referring to in your search for an issue with the product… as with any product if you look hard enough you will find lots of issue's … :)

    • 100% with you

    • +2

Agreed its a lotto draw. My XPS 13 was a dud.
There is absolutely NO CHANCE they will not replace it for you however.

  • +1

I run this laptop (albeit with the 1080p screen) with 2 x QHD monitors through USB-C… It's heaven and I can't recommend it enough. Personally, I think 4K is wasted on a 15" screen.

  • +1

Hey guys, I bought this laptop last weekend and let me tell you this laptop is beyond amazing compared to any other laptop I've owned. The screen is absolutely beautiful you really have to see some photos on this UHD screen, the colours are natural, blacks are really blacks and yes windows doesnt scale very well but I expect they will update the OS to its liking which will definitely rectify the issue in the near future. The weight well its not heavy as some people are saying, its really moderate, you can move with this anywhere unless you're a weakling. The performance is brilliant, the size form factor is pretty small, I asked the guy from JB HIFI about how quickly its selling well basically its sold out so quick every time they get a new shipment a big call from a $3K laptop initially they had 7 in stock and down to 2 looks like I was the second last buyer. I'm a little bothered sometimes it gets a pretty hot under light usage. The battery for me lasts about 5-6hrs at maximum I got 8hrs of use. Dont expect a laptop to run with all the bells and whistles with great battery life because that doesnt exist yet. I previously owned a HP spectre X360 that laptop just crapped out on me because of its touch screen malfunction which keeps messing up with my opened windows without even touching it!!! dont buy this and I dont HP anymore not after the crap they make every year.

If anyone is on the edge on buying this laptop please do as I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!

    • I was just about to buy a HP spectre x360 for a family member. You and so many others are just convincing me not to pull the trigger. It's a shame that is happening, because it seems like a sleek and beautiful laptop with a good battery life

  • i don't know much about the laptop - but my experience with their warranty was awesome. log a ticket (usual troubleshooting steps with dudes/dudettes reading off a wiki), and an engineer comes to your house and fixes it the next day. not sure if other vendors provide this kind of service or if it was a special deal i'd received during purchase, but i thought it was still pretty damn good.

  • +1

i have this laptop and it was the biggest mistake that i have done. for starter just google fan issue dell xps 15. also note that dell uses a refurbished parts to replace any broken parts of your laptop even if it is under warranty. just read the reviews about costumer service. gd luck

  • Why is this a bargain, what am I missing here

    • It's a high end laptop and if you wanted to get this straight from dell, it would cost you around 3k .. so its about $500 off.
