Casual racism alive and well on OzBargain.

      • +5

Why dosen't admin ban accounts that are a nusiance to ozbargain community

        • +5

Exactly. The first two comments on this article are completely unnecessary. Whether they are racist or just perpetuating negative stereotypes about a country is up for debate, but the point is that they contribute nothing to discussion of the deal other than to provoke negative reactions by the community reading them.

Gotta love the hypocrisy of jv constantly correcting people's typos or misdescriptions or requesting further information (regular "What's the normal price?" or "But is it a bargain?" style comments) but also flooding deal posts with pointless comments.

Is it fair to say Australia is No.1 in Racism and every Australian is Racist because media in other countries says so? I negged you.

        • Can't agree with you more. Is the racism high in Australia is a common question I get from my friends from Asian countries planning to move to Australia. The media overseas call any attack on an Asian racist irrespective of the circumstances. And do they ever report an Asian attacking an Australian? No.

        • @rvsure: Australia is one of the most racist countries I've ever visited. Obviously I still love it or I wouldn't be here, but it's undeniable.

Granted you are nowhere near as violent towards other races as the US though!

And no, the media don't call every attack racist. In fact they barely even cover them - the world doesn't revolve around Australia…

        • @callum9999:

I am not an Australian. Trust me you can easily tell where I am from by my appearance. The only racist comments I faced so far are from drunk homeless or bogans and didn't even bother to care. I have lived here long enough to say almost all the people I interacted with are lovely. I never faced racial discrimination at work even from the people who lost their job because I came from overseas and replaced them.

        • +5

@callum9999: Most racist country… where else have you been? I've been to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, Japan and Taiwan - and I would rate the racism in Australia near the bottom. Australia's "problem" is that we have an open society, where you can freely express yourself, and in a language that is (most) common to all countries. Just because it is discussed/debated/argued over by the masses, does not mean our issues here are more extensive than other countries where it is hidden by it's language, subconscious behavior and perceived culture.

Example: Chinese Singaporean's shouting abuse on social media for foreigners to get out their country is seen as nationalistic pride but if white Aussie's were doing that it's racist? (I'm not white by the way). Black people are called "black ghosts" in Chinese but hey it's an accepted part of their language right - this deep seeded undertone is okay?

Furthermore, Australia is hub of many different races and cultures who need to work together, learn together and live together. There are so many dynamics, that incidents are bound to happen… whether they are done socially, aggressively - it will happen but to say we are the most racist, well - if you mean all types of ethnicity in Australia are racist then okay but to you must underestimate this country if you think it happens here more than other countries.

N.B. I'm using Asian examples, because coming from that background - it is where I have the most experience/knowledge alongside Australia.

        • @Hydevanity:
Really well written. Clear and accurate IMHO.
Tell me, you say black people are called "black ghosts" in Chinese? I have never before heard about that. Does it refer to all people of colour? Are Indians considered "black people" in Chinese or is it aimed only at Africans and Aboriginals?

      • Casually stating negative aspects of your perception of an entire country is not realism.

Without any attempt to show apathy and extend a helping hand whilst making casual remarks points to creating offence.

And then, without having walked a day in the shoes of the people that face these offences and other negative attitude, what gives us the right to decide what is racist vs realism?

    • JV cracked a joke (pretty weak one sorry JV) about call centres - India is famous for outsourced call centres? Nearly everyone in Australia would have experienced this. Do you think it is inaccurate?
It's completely true, so how is it that racist?
Perhaps you just didn't like his joke.

      • +17

Because you're reducing a huge country of 1.2 billion people and years of history down to a very dumb and narrow idea, is why.

        • +4

There is no reduction of any kind. He is simply "joking" that you could set up a call centre there, India is famous for them and we have all experienced this.
He is associating India with call centres, but that is reasonable as it is a realistic situation. India is the world leader in call centre or "outsourcing centres" and generated ~US$16 Billion in the last year.

        • +3

@King Tightarse: It is a world popular racist joke about India. It is a lame joke by JV and it is lame that you are trying to support him.

Philippines also has huge BPO industry and expected to have $25 billions in revenues by this year. Why can't I see these jokes in the Cebu pacific deal threads?

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_process_outsourcing#I…

        • +2

          @rvsure:
The joke exists worldwide because it's based in fact and the commonly shared experience of interacting with Indian call centres. It's a simple accurate and fair association. Freud famously is quoted that "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" in reference to people over reading sexual imagery in analysis. Sometimes an association is fair when it's factually true.
You are right about the Philippines catching up.In fact they are the second largest country to do this, but they are a more recent entrant into the race. India is the first and largest, thus the association

  • ELI5: what is POLi?

Is it just an alternative to PayPay, that you can get it to deduct from your CC, but avoid CC fees?

    • +1

POLi takes you to your online banking portal and allows you to make a direct deposit from your account. it would be treated as a cash advance by your CC, so best if you have cash up front.

    • Effectively a weird version of BPay.

    • +1

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvlMUotqaeo

One annoyance with POLi is that, like PayPal, your transaction is not dealing with your bank directly. I had a situation with AirAsia during their huge sale where the connection failed after payment. The money from my bank account was gone but AirAsia didn't send me the usual e-mail confirmation. When I rang AirAsia the phone operator said they hadn't received confirmation yet (and weren't too familiar with POLi). I couldn't get a firm answer whether I should book again before the price increases (and end up paying twice?!) or risk waiting for a confirmation before booking again. After an hour my flight was confirmed.

You also forfeit chargeback rights. Think of POLi as an automated "Pay Anyone" feature, which is exactly how NAB describes it (https://www.choice.com.au/money/banking/everyday-banking/art…).

The worst part about this airline is they don't have any checked in luggage included. Not even 1, just a carry-on is allowed.
To add a 20 kg checked in bag it costs $111 each way i.e. $222 return and there goes the deal in the Bin.

    • That is when mainstream airlines allow 30 kg.

    • +2

      Don't take a bag then…

    • +2

I like traveling without check-in baggage. I can usually get away with traveling for up to a week without check-in baggage. As an added bonus, you are not waiting at a carousel when you land and can usually jump onto the cab queue faster, particularly with very full flights.

The budget airline I fly with most usually charges ~$30-$50 each way for check-in luggage which I think is reasonable and to be honest, would rather only pay it when I need it and not have it included in my fare regardless if I use the service or not (like full airlines offer). Who charges $111? I am guessing Jetstar - that does sound excessive.

  • hey mate, thanks for the deal, anything from brisbane/gc to vietnam?

    • Also one big captain cook boat back to england

    • if all the Indians were to leave in a one way flight to India as your post is insinuating, unfortunately ignorance and intolerance knows no boundaries.

Fortunately, love, knowledge appreciation also have no boundaries. So thank you India for giving us the the philosophy and the man Gandhi to liberate a nation using non violence, inspiring Martin Luther king Jr, Nelson Mandela and the entire world. Thank you India for giving us yoga, meditation, wonderful leaders in Google, Intel and all the IT and call centres that enables us to communicate the way we do and the progress in modern society.

Thank you for providing Australia with people that address the skills shortages or the people to do the jobs that the locals don't respect.

I hope India will spread the successes in some of your cities and states to the poorer states and start to address the economic imbalances you have. Yes, there is terrible poverty in some parts, but there is happiness, love and colour in the hearts of the people.

looks like im going to Vietnam $716!

  • -1

Oooh Vietnam visas not cheap but hey this makes up for it.
AND lots of Vietnamese rolls there but not the same as the rolls here….oh but probably wrong in saying that, I might be called a racist pig for that comment.
We've become such sensitive little souls today, i mean really. it's Australia…we are the first ones to take the piss out of ourselves let alone everyone else, that's what makes us totally unique.. not racist.

  • +2

Appreciate the post but not posting Perth as the origin makes it look like the typical AirAsia clickbait I was always regret clicking on (especially when the flights are ex-KL). In terms of distance it's like a Londoner reading on some "EuroBargain" equivalent - "Flights to Sydney from $1000 Return on Etihad" but the flight departs from Istanbul. We're a big country.

But due to the word limit and practicality then people might not know there are deals from Sydney and Melbourne…so you can't win.

    • +1

Agree and I don't think word limit is an excuse. One could easily understand the meaning abbreviating "Return" to "Ret" and adding "Ex Perth" to the end of the subject.

I think IWTF have posted great deals in the past and without knowing normal rates ex perth acknowledge that this is probably worthy of a post, however, I would not consider the flights ex.sydney posted above as a deal worth highlighting (pretty close to normal prices) and on first glance would put most of the east coast origins in the same boat

      • +1

Yeah I was thinking the exact same thing. Sydney in particular didn't make much sense. It's even cheaper ($464) to leave in October and return in November (as per Melbourne) but for some reason the more expensive prices were given for one of the wettest months in HCM by far (July).

        • Hi peterpeter,

The cheaper prices were found later in the day. I posted the best prices that I could find. I'll update the prices now.

      • Hi Bigweilo,

I agree that the Sydney & Melb to Cochin prices were not amazing - but the prices to New Delhi definitely are (compare to the prices in this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/241070 ). I often leave out departure cities if I feel the prices are not that great - but then I am always asked "whats the price from Sydney/Melb etc", so this time I added them for completeness.

Anyway, just explaining what goes on when I put a post together. Hopefully you find something useful.

        Cheers.

    • Hi,

Generally I do post the price from every departure airport. However, due to the word limit I couldn't fit in all the departure airports and mention the Vietnam deal. Splitting the deals into 2 posts would have allowed for better descriptions, but as a rep I have a limit of 3 deals a week & my next post is not allowed till Monday.

  • Keen on vietnam deals…ex Perth.

    Depart 21 June, return 24 June ??

    Long weekend away only?

  • Its been my dream to visit the muti-cultural multi colourful India during the Monsoon season. With these cheap prices I can fulfil my dream now.
    Thanks.

All of my Aussie friends & colleagues who've visited India loved every minute of it…I'd go in a heartbeat.

  • What about Pakistan? It's right next door??

    • Yeah nah… why would you want to go there?

      • Because it's my homeland?
