Morning all
Been waiting for the price to drop below 300aud delivered before I bought this
Original price is $317aud, 10% coupon for using the app for the first time brings it down to $285.99aud shipped. Insurance is $6.80 so still sneaks in under $300. I'm on mobile so haven't checked the USD price so there might be an opportunity to save another couple of $ and the cash back places might work as well but I've never used them
Cheers!

Thanks to the lovely person who edited my post to include everything I forgot! I had a 14 month old asleep on my right arm so was way too brief when trying to type left handed

Edit: Brief Specs
Snapdragon 650 (roughly ahead of the 801 in the LG G3 for example)
Adreno 510 GPU
3gb of Ram
32gb of storage
SD card support
Fingerprint reader
4000mah battery (good)
16mp camera (camera ain't that good by reports though)

Great price for great phone. Though do put price and basics specs in title (ie 3gb/32gb)

    • +1

      Sorry mate, all fixed up

    • -1

      what os this use?

      can we put cynagenmod?

      and is it rootable?

what is mediatek version? is it better than other version?

      http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_note_3-7863.php

      • mediatek is the worse version

      • +3

        In order of your questions

It is their own skin on top of android -MIUI. By all accounts it is pretty good and is very customisable

Not yet as the phone has only been out for a few weeks and was one of (if not the) first phones with the new Snapdragon 650. I'm sure that in time it will be possible though

Xiaomi allows the bootloader to be unlocked so I assume permanent root isn't far away. There are temporary roots out there already

The mediatek version is cheaper, slower, has no sd card slot and the camera isn't as good, plus the chances of getting a stable custom rom are much lower. For the price though it is certainly worth looking at.

          @tyler.durden:

your expectations at this price point are way too high

its basically flag ship specced at a quarter of the cost

some features and bands will be missing which i think is fair

        • +1

          @tyler.durden:

Because there's been issues with Mediatek Xiaomi devices in India.

          No,dont think so.

Probably not, cant find anything about it.

It's only the start of 2016.

Yes,lots. There are always lots of phones coming out. What is the point of asking this even. There's always dozens of Chinese smartphones coming out.

        • @Talsek:
Indian version does not have Mediatek version at all.

          its a 200 dollar phone with snapdragon 650. stop expecting a $800 for 200

    store and price in title!

    • +2

Sorry, I've never posted from mobile before

  • How to get CR to track when using the App?

    • Sorry. May not have been clear. Genuinely seeking advice from fellow ozbargainers who may have successfully used an app and received cash rewards. My understanding is for CR to work, purchase has to be made through a tracked website.

      • +1

Buying through an app does not work.

You must use a web browser -> Login to CR -> visit the site by clicking on the link -> make the purchase without closing the original browser window or tab.

For the best results, always use a computer rather than a phone, and make sure you're not on Private browsing or Incognito mode.

        • +2

Even then its dodgy in their favor.

Tried 7 purchases so far. 3 items <$10 tracked without issues.

4 items >$100, two of which were $200+ purchases didn't track.

As I've expected all along its a nice scam for those running the schemes.

I have no time or need to waste chasing them to find & track the purchases, as it was more a test of how the system operated, as opposed to me expecting anything back.

The purchases were done on a plain virtual PC without any ad-blocking, etc.

  • Nice specs for under $300

  • Nice phone. I wish the mi5 followed similar design with 5.5 screen and sensor in the back. Didn't know the s650 is comparable to s801, my oneplus with that chip is still doing very well

    • -3

would u sell oneplus to get this?

or would u choose oneplus 3 over this?

I like my oneplus one as well, but hate the multitouch problem.

      which oneplus u got?
and what chip does it have?

      • his has the s801 as outlined above

      • Got the oneplus 1 with s801. The 2 never lived up to its hype. I'm curious to see what the 3 turns out but not really holding on to that. I bought the one simply because it was the only premium budget phone at the time, now xiaomi fills that spot pretty good so I'll have no problem to pick up 1 of these

        • -2

          yeap

plus at the time there was a 20% ebay discount which made it the best most value for money premium phone at that time.

          I also bought it too..

But when I have issues with multitouch, I don't trust the quality control of oneplus anymore..

Does your oneplus have multitouch issue?

          why s801 comparable spec s650?

        • +1

@tyler.durden: lately my one plus one is having GPS issue.

  • +5

FWIW, Snapdragon 650 is not just ahead of 801, it is also ahead of 808 (in LG G4 and Nexus 5x) in terms of CPU and GPU prowess.

    • +2

the snapdragon processor soc is awesome
i prefer them over the horrible mediatek povo cpus

how mediatek are still in business is beyond me, some of the most horrid processors in the world

      • -1

Mediatek still in business coz they still makes CPU for iphone 6s A9 chips and going to make A10 chips for iphone 7…………………..

        • The Apple A9 is a 64-bit system-on-chip (SoC), designed by Apple Inc. Manufactured for Apple by both Samsung and TSMC, it first appeared in the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus which were introduced on September 9, 2015.[11] Apple states that it has 70% more CPU performance and 90% more graphics performance compared to its predecessor, the Apple A8,[11] and is currently one of the most powerful mobile chips on the market today along with the Samsung Exynos 8890 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820.

pretty sure mediatek dont make the actual iphone 6s processor

          maybe clones

        • @shawncro 222: TSMC = Mediatek = crap = iphone but > samsung…… mmmmm…. interesting.

      • The MTK chip in my zte fit I prefer to the s410 that you normally find in <$50 phones. I guess they are still in business because of bang for buck. Qualcomm flagship chips weren't that great last year, in someways I don't think they were too much better than the previous year. Batterylife definitely took a nosedive. I think this year exynos is still in front, the only area the s820 seems to be better is in gpu performance, but then you lose out in batterylife and general performance.

    • -2

My g4 sounds more like a dud every passing second!!! Probably one of my worst purchase ever lol

      • +1

        Whats wrong with your G4?

        • -2

Most of the things I find annoying with the g4 dont concern everage users. Its gotta do with the mediocre software and lg's attempt to thwart potential development for the g4. It was a big company flagship phone and its a steal for the price it has been going for however I can't help feeling a bit disappointed comparing with the likes of these. My nexus 6p is on the way so this feeling should go away soon. Haul ass kogan shipping department!!!

  • Where is the 10% code I can't find it.

    • +1

It's not a code, you have to buy it through the banggood app to get the price.

      • I did try the app but still got the higher price. Anyways I found a link to signup to get 10% off

        • Hey mate, where did you find the signup link?

          *** NVM: found it!

        • @jassep:

Would be nice if one of you can point me to the right direction, is it within the app or is it done via a browser?

        • @mikkim4eva:
via app. once you install it. sign up and you should be able to see a coupon in your account which you can use at the checkout

        • @bamsegod:

          thanks, found it

Having had this phone since the beginning of March, I have to say it is very good. The version I have is the Chinese model with dual SIM support.

4G speed in China wasn't great, but I guess that would have more to do with the network than the phone since I had higher download speed in HK with 3G.

Also, the finger print scanner is very fast, faster than the iphone 5S that I was comparing with. The battery life is the best I have ever had, it lasted 2 days per charge compare to 1 day for 5S, but that could change due to different 4G/LTE cat here in Australia as while in HK, battery life was shorter and comparable with the 5S.

There is an official International ROM for this phone from XiaoMi and will bring Google Play to the phone, however you do need to request for the boot loaded to be unlock before you can change it.

    • Have you got root?

      • Not sure if this answers your question exactly, but Xiaomi have their own in-built app that allows you to flash their roms. There's no need for root if you're flashing their official roms.

It's incredibly simple to do, and I wish all manufacturers did this. You basically download the rom, stick it in the phone, run the app, choose the file and you're done.

        • Thanks for the reply. I was asking more along the lines of running apps like titanium, ad-away and f.lux.

  • Great price. There's a whopping thread over at whirlpool full of info on rooting/unlocking etc., if you're that way inclined.

Best phone under $300 by far if you can live with the couple compromises it has (no band 28, no local support beyond forums).

  • +3

Just bought LG G4 from Kogan so I had to pass. Nevertheless great price!

    • +1

LG G4 support 700, 28 band and this one does not ???

      • +1

Yes unless you bought it from Kogan then it does not. :(

        • Could you explain more? I thought LG G4 supports 700, 28 bands, whether you buy from Kogan or retail shops in Australia?

If not what other phones that have 2 sims that support 28 bands ?

  • Damn, I bought the 2GB/16GB version for the same price on GeekBuying.

SEE ALSO: 2GB/16GB model for $244 shipped, also via BangGood
    http://www.banggood.com/Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-3-Pro-5_5-inch-2GB…

    • slightly cheaper at geekbuying when you add the 5% coupon code

  • How does this compare to an Asus ZE551ML ZenFone2 32GB / 1.8Ghz Quad Core / 2GB RAM?

    Is it a worthy upgrade?

Or should I wait for something better at this $300-$350 AUD price point…

    • +1

      That zenfone is outdated

ASUS released another one called Zenfone Laser 2
      http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Asus-Zenfone-2-Laser-Revie…

it got an improvement to it's camera thanks to laser based AF, but the battery life apparently is not as good. Not sure if it's due to the difference in ARM vs x86 intel chipset

but the XM Note 3 pro is better overall. That's if you don't care much for photography.

    • +1

I wouldn't upgrade to this phone from a Zenfone.
You probably won't even be able to tell the difference in daily usage.
Really comes down to what you do.
I have a ZE551ML with the higher clocked processor and 4GB ram, it also has 700mhz B28 LTE.
I am waiting for a Mi5 Pro maybe or hopefully something cheaper that has 700mhz, dual sim and a half decent camera.

      • +1

thanks. after a lot of umming and arring, i have also decided that it is not an upgrade for me from zenfone 2. antutu is showing nearly double the score for this one though and fingerprint unlock is also a bonus. otherwise not too much of an upgrade.

  • -2

    It's cheaper on everbuying $270

    • nope. either you are looking at the mediatek or the 16gb one.

      its 334 at everybuying

  • 16mp camera (camera ain't that good by reports though)

Is the camera no good merely due to the hardware, or is it the software?

Also how does this compare with the Doogee F5?

  • +2

I can't believe you people are comparing this phone with the LG G4. The G4 is one year old this month and still kicks ass!

    • +1

I agree with you more or less that the G4 is a flagship and awesome high end device for most "normal" users.

But to me the LG G4 was dead on arrival. Why? Cause the bootloader is locked. I only use Android devices for the hack-ability they provide. If I couldn't hack or mod I'd go to some other OS.

      • lol. would you be selling it soon then? :P

        • +1

          Gave it to my partner.

      • Any major benefits to access to root, beyond the fun of it?

        • You know how there's F.lux on PC?

It now runs on Android too! (but requires root)
there's a beta on Play Store
          https://forum.justgetflux.com/topic/2304/preview-version-in-…

And of course there's ad-away, root only
          https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway

or maybe you want some seriously amazing sound out of your android device, beyond just changing the EQ and the pre-amp?
Viper4 Android takes care of that.

Backup the entirety of your device with Titanium Backup and then upload your backups to the cloud (Dropbox, GDrive).

          Automate your phone with Tasker.

Recover lost / missing files with DiskDigger

Reclaim free space with SD Maid, automatically delete orphaned objects and duplicate items

Game doesn't want to install on your device? Make your phone 'different' by giving a different model name in the build.prop.

        • @scrimshaw: hmm I used to use a f.lux copy on Android but it was more annoying than helpful.

Adblock sounds like the only useful thing for me. Hopefully g4 has stable root

    • They are very similar spec-wise so why can't we compare em?its not like comparing g4 with the s7

      • +2

They seem to each be good at different things.

G4 very good camera vs avg camera?
G4 avg battery life vs great battery life
G4 soc isn't as good but the gpu better than s650 (research shows me they are very similar, the 650 uses better A72 cores instead of A57 but is fab on 28 vs 20 with 808)
        G4 has better band support
        Swappable battery on G4
        No fingerprint sensor on G4
Internal storage speed? G4 is pretty fast, I notice on lower end phones this is usually one area they save money.

It's probably better to spend more and get the G4 if you care about band support and good camera. This phone offers unbelievable value if you don't care about the compromise.

        • Yes I agree for my requirements, band support & good camera rate highly, but I also need the functionality of dual sims.
Do you have any thoughts about the most OZ band compatible LG G4 dual sim phone.

  • thanks got the phone and some piston3's for just under 300.

  • How does this compare to the $40-50 cheaper Xiaomi Mi4i?

    • Smaller screen, battery and ram. Non expandable memory (doesn't take sd), no finger print.
This one is a Very good deal, I own a meizu metal but I would consider the redmi note 3 if I needed to upgrade.

  • Perfect timing! Thanks OP for this deal. I got it for AUD$311, including expedited shipping and insurance, so that is a great deal. :)

    • how did you specify expedited shipping? i could only see the air registered 7-25 days..

      • Hi, when you touch "shipping" field, it comes up with EMS Express Mail Service 7-15 business days. At least it did for me?

    • I ordered one from GeekBuying with TNT shipping. They shipped it on Friday and I got the phone on Monday. So quick. Upgrade from LG G2 and very happy with this.

      • How's the camera compared to it? I'm currently on G2 and I don't want my next phone to be a downgrade of the camera

        • Yes, the camera is not good in low light but not worse than camera in G2.

  • +1

I got this from HK (China Version tho, the HK version was released 2 days later) since my Sony Z3 died, 1780HKD which was $294AUD at the time.
The camera on this is next to terrible for me, the manual settings are worse than the Sony's (can't choose ISO), and when you can choose ISO (I tried Advance Camera), the shutter speed would stay the same=darker image, but the main issue is that there is no stabilisation, digital or optical. I recorded a school performance a few days back, around 5minutes long and the video turned out shaky the whole way through… (Being heavier than the Z3 doesn't help either).
Besides the camera, it's been a pretty reliable phone with upwards of 5hours SoT.

  • +1

is banggood or geekbuying faster with shipping?

    • TNT took 3 days to ship my phone from Shenzen to Melbourne.

  • +16

Absolutely useless as it has no 700MHz band which is critical for both Telstra and Optus. No 850MHz band either for 4G which Vodafone uses either so partially rubbish for them too. Oops. $300 for what again? What good is a phone if it doesn't support local bands, no matter what else it has? Even a local locked Telstra prepaid such as the Y5 has the full gamut of bands for a fraction of the price. You need 700MHz or 850MHz as the low bands are the ones that penetrate further and can aggregate with the upper bands to boost speed.

    • THIS is the response I have been waiting for.

      Thank you @lost69

    • +1

Very nearly purchased. Thanks for your post.

    • +1

Most people seem to get away with it just fine, esp with Optus.. only a slight issue out of cities.

    • +1

I used a OnePlus One with no 700Mhz on Telstra for over a year with no problems. Sure I wouldn't get top 4GX speeds, but I still got regular 4G

      • +1

And if you used a 4GX phone you would have seen what you were missing out on, just not on free data days. Low bands are critical in Australia, the telcos have decided on them and buying a phone without one or the other at least is pointless. See here:

        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2374050

        • +1

I've got an iPhone 6S and yes, I notice really high speeds when I do speedtests, but in reality I use my phone for facebook, a bit of web browsing, messaging and audio streaming. I don't really need 20MB/sec for that :) It's not like I'm going to be downloading huge files on a phone.

        • +1

          @chromium:

Yep. 4G is nice but for casual browsing/internet use even 3G works just fine.

I'm still on 3G (old grandfathered plan) and the only time i realise the network speed is struggling is when I tether to my laptop.

        • +2

If the fastest possible speed at all times (for posting speed test resultS?) is important to you I'd agree, but in reality you rarely get that all the time or require it..

Critical's a huge overstatement. 700's very often saturated anyway.

That whirlpool thread only confirms the 4G landscape is in a state of flux.

        • +1

          @autolux:

Its starting to settle down and low bands are now important. Its not 2012. Plus 700MHz can merge with 1800MHz or higher to give better speeds, congestion aside, depending on the carrier.

        • +2

          Maybe rural parts of Australia.

I have had two phones side by side, and my home/work and commute have noticed no different although one lacked low band 28 and other didn't. The places I got low signal was low on both, and good was on both too. Maybe cause I don't venture too far out of city?

I work in a Melbourne CBD building and get terrible reception in the elevators and toilets in the building on both phones, low band or not. Not sure why.

Two two phones in question were Nexus 5 (no band 28) vs iPhone 6 with Band 28 and on the Optus network. I checked at the places I was at Optus does have band 28 available according to oztowers.

    • +1

Useful post, well done. 4g is a total non factor for me. I'm connected to wifi 24/7, and the 4g band is patchy at best in my local town.

Hence why $300 is the absolute most I'm interested to spend on a phone; they're a pretty superfluous item in my day to day existence.

    • +1

Not "absolutely useless" - I have one and it's perfectly fine without the 700MHz band on the Optus network… can't comment for the other networks though.

      • i am sorry ,Vivian have no news from you for a long time.
Can you check email or PM message and reply us?

    • +2

I've got one and I'm on TPG (Voda network) and the 4G speed has been pretty good. Even get 4G+ closer to the city.

    • Is 4G 28 bands only refers to mobile internet speed or also refers to telephone reception ?

    • +2

I put the $1 amaysim or Vodafone to second sim slot and usually got about 45-50Mbps using speedtest, why do people need higher that speed on their phone? And this phone easily reach 10 hours on screen time.
