  • time to print an Ozbargain business card.

  • good deal

  • I recently used my QFF points to redeem most of our family's four tickets, but left some amount to pay by AMEX which includes travel insurance, so it's probably no bad thing the points didn't cover for a complete ticket.

    • +3

Don't you have to pay the whole airfare on credit card to receive the complimentary insurance?

      • Good question.

      • Depends on the card. For most of the bank issued ones, yes, I believe so. They also usually have a minimum spend of your holiday expenses (accommodation, car hire, tours, airfares) of about $500.

Some of the AMEX ones have specific wording that say something to the effect of "including those booked with points", and I think this one + the other AMEX Platinum Charge Card are one of the cards that cover for flights booked with points.

      • I think my ANZ issued cards were a minimum of $250.

      • Depends on the card. Some only require a percentage or dollar amount.

  • -2

I doubt people who can afford the $1500 annual fee would shop ozbargain style… just sayin

    • +5

Check out the response to the $1200 version of the card I posted… plenty of people on decent incomes looking for a good deal.

      • +2

Indeed, many would just look at this as a legitimate purchase of points and other benefits. .5 point for ato payments is a disappointment.

        • +2

Yeah, I don't know why anybody would pay the tax office with Amex, knowing that you'll only get 0.5 points, but pay 1.5%.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Considering you get 110,000 FF points for a $349 yearly fee with the regular Platinum Amex, is $1500 for 150,000 really worth it?

        • +1

@Tiggrrrrr: You can no longer get that though, but yes from a pure points point of view that is better. Keep in mind that that is only Velocity points though (and KrisFlyer, I guess), whereas these points are a lot more flexible.

        • +1

@Tiggrrrrr: That offer is now 80k points for $349 with a free flight. IMO a a slightly better value offer than the two Amex charge cards, but quite a different proposition (the Platinum Cards are really only great value if you have significant travel - especially overseas travel - planned in the next year, where the Velocity Amex is great even if you don't have immediate plans). I have both. :)

        • @illumination: Hmmm….good point. $1500 for a Business class ticket to London seems like a good deal. Anyone know if that is inclusive of taxes?

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Ok, didn't realise they had dropped the points by 30k. Although I'm quite happy with it, I don't think I will renew. Similar point earns elsewhere, for zero fee cards, and not really a fussed over the airport lounges.

        • +1

@Tiggrrrrr: Or you could get them all. ;)

          Ping @ muncan

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Where is this 80k for $349 deal?

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: HaHa. Just like pokemon.

I'm just looking at your other post now. Might apply for that instead.

        • +2

@Move-D: Try here Velocity Platinum Credit Card: You get up to 80,000 Velocity points after $500 spend (within 3 months), Free Domestic Flight*

        • +1

@Move-D: Per the link posted by Tiggrrrrr, just pick a referral link for the Velocity Platinum.

        • I have a different AMEX and Ive never paid using it where I have to pay extra, its never worth it at all.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Not with this card obviously. I understand Westpac business cards still give full points for ato payments. This is second hand info

  • Do I get those points annually? Or is it a one off sign up deal?

    • The tricky part would be $5k in the first two months - No idea what I could buy in the next two months… or buy and return? Betting maybe?

    • It's a one time deal.

  • +1

best thing to do for anyone trying to meet the minimum spend is buy a Qantas business class fare 12 months in advance, wait til you get the points then refund as soon as they are processed.

  • How to estimate the value of the points on various airlines without actually having an account there?

In other words - what can I get for the 150000 Membership Rewards Points that kind of cost $1500?

    • The best way to use them is redeem flight, but many airlines in the list has ridiculous fuel surcharge which they disguise as taxes and fees (YR & YQ carrier charges)

You'd better understand the system well or else you are still out of pocket by $1000+ after using 100K+ points to redeem flight. Cathay Pacific is good one without any ridiculous fuel surcharge, QF, BA, SQ are all bad.

I think the best value out of those airlines are MH Enrich with 35K miles oneworld redemption on Business class for 200K points or 50K miles for 220K points

Even so, $1500 is kinda negate any benefit, especially with all the airlines deals posted everyday, you have more options at cheap price and the deal include ALL taxes and fuel surcharges

      • +1

Can you get a business class ticket to Europe for under $2k? (return)

  • +4

When posting an Amex deal you should include a link to the amex referrals page to share the love
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals…

    • Actually, I have already requested Mods to review my post at first instance. He (I think) said I did everything correctly in my post. In fact, I have to ask him to add a new card category in Wiki so I can add my link.

  • -3

    This is ozbargainers not ozfeepayers.

  • +2

Remember if you are on 100,000 plus then for each $1 over $80K you are paying 39%tax, for each $1 over $180K you are paying 49% tax. So in a way you are converting $1500 of pretax business income into private purposes eg the 150,000 points can be used to fly to sydney hawaii return economy (57000 each) for 3 with Jetstar.

  • Doesnt look like there is much advantage over this deal ?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/236605

    • +1

At a high level, the benefit would be using a single credit enquiry for a single application, but for "more value" (150k points per credit enquiry vs 120k points) for the same rate ($1/1000pts). Not sure if it works the same way for business cards in terms of enquiries though?

      Cons?

      • More restrictive I guess - i.e. only if you have an ABN.
      • Bonus point categories are probably not as attractive for most people

Seems like more cons than benefits but still a good deal, overall, I think.

      • Also ongoing you still pay $1200/1500 next year but with no bonus points.

  • +3

Sweet… 99 supplementary card holders for free!
    Who wants a supplementary card??

  • +1

I think it's pretty misleading to say "almost free" tickets for the points values you've quoted, unless they are the points cost which include offsetting the tax as well?

Unless you can use points to offset the taxes payable, then it is never free because all redemption tickets charge for some sort of taxes. Even then, it is usually not particularly good value for your points to offset the tax cost with the points.

It would be like advertising a $650 return on QF SYD-SIN as $400 because the taxes are $250. But from a consumer point of view, you really don't care how much the taxes are. What you care about is the total fare, and in the context of a redemption ticket, you have to consider the tax costs + points.

    • You're right, but it's not always the case. Velocity don't charge much by way of taxes, but then Qantas, Singapore and Malaysian all charge heaps.

      • Yea I guess in the case of Velocity you could say it's somewhat cheaper, but even then it's (correct me if I'm wrong) $100+ (international fares) which is still a fair amount of money to part with in addition to points.

  • $1500 per year and still only 1 point per dollar. Seems to be the almighty cap on points earn.

  • Their insurance looks pretty good. But promoting your referral link is quite unseemly. It would be a shame if we start to look like AFF (Aust Frequent Flyer) web site

    • I'm sure the mods will fix this soon. In the meantime, his link is just saving users time, as he's the only poster with a referral link for this card. :)

    • Actually, I have already requested Mods to review my post at first instance. He (I think) said I did everything correctly.

  • Thanks mate. Gonna apply for one for work.

  • if you already have a personal amex card and apply for business one in a company name would you still qualify for the points?

    • I would be interested in this as well
