  • I am looking at this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-Desktop-Intel-Core-…

Doesn't come with monitor but has a 2GB Graphics card and I already have a 24" FHD monitor. Should come down to about $720

    • +2

The card is only the GeForce GT 730 so if your looking at playing games its not going to be very good.

    • was thinking about getting the same but specs are borderline.. shame no real others are discounted waiting to see if dell will discount others further in coming days

    • I have one of these, the previous model, I got it really cheap from the Outlet.

It is a fantastic machine, it will do everything well EXCEPT gaming. It is not a gaming machine, if you want to game buy something else.

The video card is good as it gives you a DVI port, if you don't need DVI remove the card and use onboard HDMI as it has Intel HD Graphics 530.

      Nice quiet machine too.

      • Looking at the case measurements, it seems to be wide enough. Can you squeeze a short length graphics card in there? For example this item is just 170 x 111 x 37mm. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MSI-GeForce-GTX-950-2GD5-OC-Video…

        • I have the older model which is similar techically but bigger a case so I cannot help there. Download the manual from Dell and look.

  • too bad only 1 hdmi and 1 vga, i need two monitors and from what people said using vga is not good enough.
also a little bit (still) too big.

    • +1

people said using vga is not good enough

      which people?

      • +12

people in ozbargain. random people i have never met. but i trust them

        • +3

svga is better than vga anyway…

    • +1

The specs do not include the ports of the video card, it should have another DVI and VGA on that.

VGA is fine for desktop work even at 1920x1200

      • +1

My work PC has one VGA and one DVI. The font is noticeably crapper (not as crisp) on the vga connected monitor. Both using 24" screens (same brand). It annoys me every time i look at it.. which unfortunately is 8 hours a day monday-friday…. :P

          I have not found that.

I have an Ultrasharp Dell 16:10 monitor, actually 2, and I use the auto switching between DVI and VGA to connect 2 PCs to one of them. Handy feature.

          I cannot tell the diffence.

If your fonts are blurry it means the monitor is probably interpolating the signal and not going native resolution.

Seriously, go DVI but at 1920x1200 and below it makes no difference to go the old connector that I have found.

        • Check the VGA cable. Noise causing the fine details not crisp.

        • @jpl @SamR:

Thanks for the suggestions. Problem solved by quitting and moving to another company which has decent hardware, and as a bonus I got a month of annual leave paid out.

These would make great office PCs I reckon. And I was looking on the dell site and found something at the same price, but lesser specs. LEts see if I can find it again.

    • Here we are: LINK

But I need WIndows 10 Pro for a new office, so maybe if I write to them at [email protected] they can help.

      • Dell Optiplexes are more reliable, more thoroughly tested and have better cooling, as well as being quieter. A lot more expensive though, but when you run a business you don't want to waste your money on inferior equipment with poorer quality tech support.

When you buy a business - grade machine, Dell always prioritizes business users over mainstream ones. this means getting better warranty service — e.g instead of you shipping the PC back to the depot, they send you a technician and fix it up on the spot for you

        • +1

Yes. But we are on a budget and I can do the fixing myself, unless something fries up. I was in the 700-800 range and this seems to hit the sweet spot. I do completely agree with you though, but budget constraints!

        • The Dell Optiplexes would have to be pretty quiet as I own the older model Dell Inspiron and I cannot hear it.

          It runs pretty cool too.

Reliability? So far so good but all the components are standard and cheap. Intel CPU, Segate HD, probably Intel MB etc

  • Beware, the specs on eBay are misleadingly listing it as 3.3GHz, when the real speed is 2.7. 3.3 is an "up to" single core "turbo" speed.

Of course, if you turn the Turbo function off, it reverts to 4.77MHz.

Should I get this, or the ex-lease Optiplex, which is similar speed (unless I'm mislead), and spend the change on SSD, discrete graphics card, and monitor?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237344

    • The real speed is not 2.7. The base clock is meaningless, given Skylake CPUs virtually never spend any time at the base clock speed.

      • It matters if you are trying to compare to other systems. Means more than the peak single-core speed.

I thought it was also the actual speed under heavy multi-threaded load and benchmarks. No?

        • No. The base clock is totally irrelevant and meaningless.
Even under heavy multi-threaded load, the 6400 does 3.1 clicks, not 2.7.

  • Created a new paypal account just so I could order this yesterday with the initial promo code. :D

  • Could you fit a dedicated GPU that's actually decent into this?

On closer inspection and research, the best you could probably do is a low profile 750ti. Without seeing inside it'd be a tossup whether that would fit and whether the PSU (220W) could power it.

  • Deal or not, I've owned a 540S and a 580S and wouldn't buy another slimline… unless you just want to plomp it on your desk and leave it as is. There's usually bugger all you can do to upgrade these things.
Ps. Not sure about this particular model, but in the past you couldn't even run a raid setup in these!

  • Received mine on Thursday. Super quick shipping, had some trouble getting the wifi set up initially, but switching to WPA2 on the router settings did the trick. Other than that, it has been great so far. Nice basic small form PC with plenty of hdd space, good speed/performance, etc and great value in my books at the discounted price. Very happy. :)
